“One night stay”
Reviewed 30 June 2014 via mobile

Stayed for one night on 26 June with my wife and we had a very nice stay ! We arrived early , but this wasn't a problem , it was a beautiful location, a wonderful and clean place to stay, comfy bed, spectacular view, nothing was too much trouble for breakfast! Don't be put off by overly negative reviews, Jenny was a wonderful host!!!!

I stayed with friends (they booked it) and although the stay was ok, we never relaxed as Jenny was sometimes nice but mostly off hand and rude we were lectured continually on a number of things before we even got to our room…..no chewing gum, no feeding the dogs, no smoking etc etc she went on and on. None of us had gum or cigarettes at any point during our stay!!

Breakfast was very sparse, the cooked breakfast was served on a side plate and Jenny was watching your every move, no plates on top of other plates and one slice of bread at a time in the toaster! I still laugh when I think of the half slice of haggis on the tiny plates!!

Such a shame as a lovely location.

The Old Pier House is in the most perfect location for viewing Loch Ness and trying to spot Nessie. Jenny is very welcoming and knows the surrounding area so well. We had a very enjoyable two night stay staying in Room 4 with great views onto the Loch from our bedroom window. The place was very clean and the breakfast was very tasty indeed.
It was an ideal spot for our grand-daughter as she helped Jenny feed the horses and played with the very friendly dog. For people travelling to the area, The Old Pier House will not disappoint.

Room Tip: Room 4 has brillant views

We found this place by accident but it turned out to be the highlight of our trip. The location is beautiful with amazing views of the loch and the owner Jenny was very kind and friendly. She even gave us a lift to the pub in the evening and came to collect us. We thought that the accommodation was very good value for money and will definitely be back soon.

We visited the Old Pier House in July 2013 during a family trip to England and Scotland -- the height of holiday/tourist season. We had been to the area 20 years prior (although in early May) and were a bit overwhelmed by the crowds, even in Fort Augustus. The Old Pier House was a wonderful and welcome getaway from all of that. It offered great views and what felt like an almost deserted and secret stretch of shoreline on the loch. Jenny MacKenzie is full of stories about the history of the property (literally an old pier house, complete with an old pier) that has been in her family for generations and is a great host and full of character. Breakfast was characteristically hearty and the self-catering family suite was a great base for our family (2 adults, 2 teens) to explore the area.

Lovely warm welcome by Jenny, and a beautiful location. Good sized bed, views over the loch. great powerful shower. Great breakfast, with views all round, and a bird table right beside the window. Really nice lounge with chess board etc, and a wood burning stove in one area, and there's a smaller lounge part that if there are only a few guests is curtained off with a fire and comfortable seats. Lovely stay. Horses out the back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Old Pier House, a Highland farmhouse on the shores of Loch Ness, near the pretty village of Fort Augustus. We offer bed and breakfast in the main house open from April to October and self-catering facilities in our Loch Ness Log Cabins which are open all year round. This is a very private location on a peninsula in Loch Ness with stunning loch and mountain views yet only a ten minute walk or a two minute drive from the centre of the village. Located in the heart of the Highlands we are ideally situated as a central base for your Scottish touring holiday. We welcome walkers, cyclists, canoeists, horses and camping groups. There is plenty of parking and storage space. The 125 year old house with magnificent views has been extended to provide comfortable en-suite ground floor bedrooms, sitting rooms with log fires and a large bright breakfast room with superb views. Originally the Old Pier House was the end of the line for the West Highland Railway where big paddle steamers carried timber, cattle and people up the loch to Inverness. The old pier still remains and provides wonderful photo opportunities, a great picnic location and moorings for small boats. We have friendly Highland cattle and ponies that graze naturally on the heather hills, fields and surrounding woodlands. We speak fluent Gaelic, French, German, Italian and Spanish. ... more   less
