Stayed just one night but so memorable as we were treated to an impromptu musical jam session in the cozy lobby--Scottish traditional ballads and dances played on guitar, fiddle, penny-whistle, and more by the two talented McClellan daughters. (It all started when we asked about the guitar resting by the registration desk which turned out to be reserved for guests!) Our family (two teenage sons, a 9-year-old) was enchanted--we shared some of our music, too. A little golf course in the yard was also entertaining. Great breakfast, comfortable beds, rooms clean and pretty. Loved all the little public rooms with fireplaces and nooks. Our hostess, Joanna, had helpful information about our itinerary to come. Perfect, quiet location, easy to find, a good stopping point in our journey to Skye. The 8 pm Loch Ness boat tour was a pleasant evening diversion. We hope to be back!

If at least a couple days' stay in a country village is in the cards, stay here. We spent two weeks hopping from place to place all over Scotland and Ireland, and England, and this was by far the best place we stayed. You'll feel like a guest in someone's house; the room is fully decorated as if it were someone's bedroom, interesting knick-knacks, soft colors, extremely comfortable bed, absolutely silent, secure neighborhood at night. This place is in a village (Fort Augustus) with a small handful of shops and pubs, and we used it to launch off to castles and other sights. We both agreed that we would go back to exactly the same town to this very place if we were to go back again, and spend more than two nights! The hosts were engaging, humorous, helpful, and anticipated things we might need. Exactly what we were hoping for.

In June 2004 we stayed there for just one night. Reservation was made in advance by email with a quick response. The hotel itself is very clean, our room was small but quite right for a short stay. For longer stays check size of room. Very friendly personnel, since the hotel is family owned. Can recommend this 2-star house, because its clean and very sympathic. Web at ------------------

The Caledonian Hotel is a very friendly and Relaxing Family run Hotel which I have frequented every year for almost 30 years. The Hotel has been run by Johanna Maclellan for all this time and the quality of food and cleansiness in the hotel is second to none. They have a web page.
