“Wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

We just returned from a vacation in Scotland and Ireland. I can tell you that we found Craigdarroch House to be our favorite in Scotland. It is a quiet location with an outstanding view of Loch Ness. When making reservations, be sure to pay the extra for the Loch side, it is well worth it. We used it as a base for traveling around the Highlands. The bedrooms are quite large, with king size beds and pillow top mattresses. For those of you who are from the USA, this is not common in Scotland or Ireland. The food was good, pretty much pub fare and it was a great place to meet locals. We found the owners and staff to be friendly, courteous and helpful. I have read some reviews as to the road. We did not find this to be a problem. The road to the hotel is gravel and a little steep, but it made for a great adventure and story. If you have a GPS, just plug in Foyers, Scotland and as long as you get to the Village of Foyers, you will find Cragdarroch House. We traveled with another couple and we all agreed we would return without question. To Mike, Elinor, Heather and "Grandfather" , thank you for a wonderful experience!!!

Room Tip: Reserve a room on the Loch Ness side.

Having read the reviews I was a little concerned about our visit. We did indeed have to go through to the bar to check in. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room well decorated and the bed not only very comfortable but also enormous.
The food is as suggested pub food but it is of good standard with decent portions. Breakfast was excellent and I had no trouble distinguishing either the flavours or texture of the haggis, black pudding and sausage as had been suggested in another review.
All in all we had an excellent time and are looking forward to going again next year!

Finding the Hotel initially was a little bit tricky as the road we were directed down looked like more of a dirt track and was very steep! I was concerned how we might get back up, especially with all the heavy rain we'd had, but fortunately the return to the main road was via a different route. Once there the views were amazing. The hotel itself does look a bit dated (some of the decor was very random!) but the food was wonderful. We sat in the lounge by the window which had a fantastic view, the main meals and dessert were both satisfying and incredibly tasty. It was also reasonably priced. We were not staying at the hotel so I cannot review accommodation, but we would definitely recommend the Craigdarroch for food.

Room Tip: we did not stay overnight at the hotel, but would definitely recommend a room with a view

To say that this a very peculiar eclectic mix of hotel genres is a fundamental understatement. The old and grand is thoroughly and badly mixed with the new and brash. The so called “quiet” lounge has its own dartboard, which contrasts starkly with the well mellowed wooden fitting and Wedgewood Blue walls. Sadly this otherwise delightful room is well within the sound of the large screen television in the bar, pounding out football to screams of delight or dismay from the locals.

The bar area is just that, a bar, complete with the aforementioned giant television and gaming machines. Interesting, all orders must go through the bar, and that is sometimes very busy with people clinging to it as they drink and watch football, generating an access problem for guests. Add to this further use of critical space with staff using it to take their own meals.

There is no drinks service to your table.

Certainly the Craigdarroch has a current AA 4 Star Rating, but what is not clear is that this rating is for an INN, not for a hotel as the Craigdarroch advertises itself. It may indeed comply with the splendidly vague (indeed meaningless) criteria laid down for an INN at this level, but it falls woefully short of the standard laid down for a HOTEL. I think many a previous reviewer has fallen foul of this discrepancy, with reasonable expectations of what 4 Star means when referring to a hotel. Is this legal? To me it smacks clearly of mis-representation, to say nothing of being quite unethical.

They’ve really just lost the plot. This is a pub with nice rooms.

Having said that, the rooms were well appointed, clean, warm and dry, providing a good nights sleep and plenty of space. Old in decor the room and corridors felt well within period for that part of the building, and gave a feeling of warmth and quality. Bedding was excellent.

Fine dining it is not, but what was clearly pub grub was as good as it gets, with generous portions of good material well cooked and presented, at wholly reasonable prices. The Cabernet was excellent.

The traditional breakfast was however really a bit disappointing, with poor quality materials, hastily cooked I think, or just too long under heat lamps. Anyway, the Lorne Sausage tasted remarkably like the Black Pudding, which was surprisingly similar to the Haggis. By contrast my wife had Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon, and rates it highly, with generous portions indeed.

As usual staff could not have been more helpful, they're not the problem.

I could go on, but can sumarise by saying that at the deal price of £70.00 for Double, B&B, with cooked breakfast it represented reasonable value for money. But at the asking price of £120.00 it simply beggars belief. 2 Star at best.

Room Tip: Cut a good deal or walk away.

On driving down a rough single track road we thought we had arrived at the wrong place. A feeling of dread washed over us. So much so that we drove away to check it was the right hotel. The outside of the hotel was shabby and unkempt. On entering the hotel there is no reception instead we had to walk through to the bar. Here we were greeted by two staff members who looked at us as if we had interrupted a private conversation. Certainly not a warm welcome. We were taken to our room, Inside were two single beds which had seen better days. The room looked as though it had been furnished with second hand furniture. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls. The bathroom was clean although not very modern. We can't comment on the food as we refused to eat there. We would not return to this hotel and only wished we had read the trip advisor reviews beforehand.

A friend and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights using a groupon voucher. Was easy to find, sign on the main road is easily spotted. Hotel is situated a little bit back from the loch side but has stunning views of the loch, which can be taken in while you sit outside at one of their many picnic tables, while having a drink. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Dinner was included in our deal, service was excellent and the food was nice, standard pub grub but very pleasant. Breakfast service was good as well, yet again friendly staff and a lovely cooked breakfast, there was also a continental selection. Our room was good, plenty of storage and space. I did find the bed a bit lumpy personally but everyone is different. I would definitely visit here again, great location for visiting the local sites, friendly staff and good value for money.

We visited the bar here whilst staying at Loch Ness Shores Campsite. We had already eaten so just went for drinks. The food being served to other customers looked delicious and the menu looked nice - and had a good scottish twist to their meals!

Bar staff very friendly and welcoming. Nice surroundings and stunning views over the Loch.

We hope to come back for a meal some day!
