This place is great. Warm welcome and peace and quite await you. 20 min walk from the Applecross Inn. Plenty of scenery and wildlife right on the door step. Good clean accomadation for a youth hostel with wifi !!! A must for motorbikes like me :)

What a lovely hostel, with friendly and welcoming staff who even brought a cooked breakfast over to our dining room for us! (A group of 5 of us stayed).
Hidden away from the main road with beautiful views from each window.
Rooms were clean, nice and cosy and beds were comfortable. Showers were really good too.

Room Tip: None of the rooms were very far from accessing a toilet and shower, and all the rooms were clean and comfortable.

Do you ever find one of those places to stay that you would rather keep it to yourself? This is one of those places - yes, a tad out of the way, but that's the point. It's beautifully secluded, but a great base from which to explore the peninsula and the surrounding hills. Recently refurbished, it's got all you need, and staff can't do enough for you. Although it's publicised through the SYHA and other hostel sites, the place is run by the Venture Trust, which does amazing work with young people.

Two ways of getting here: over the mountain pass (an experience in itself) or the coastal road, with less dramatic, but equally beautiful views. Site itself is an outdoor activity centre set a mile or so back from the bay - the Hostel is a separate building which has been completely refurbished to provide a high standard of accommodation. Clean and comfortable. Friendly and efficient service. The community at Applecross is rather spread out along the coastline. Hostel is at the northern end of it all. Allow plenty of time if driving there - you'll want to stop to look at the views, and you'll have to stop for other vehicles on the single track roads.

Applecross is wonderful, but in summer the little axis of the inn and the campsite can make it feel like a mini holiday resort transplanted incongruously into north west Scotland. Although the SYHA isn't promoting it widely yet, I found the hostel thanks to a small sign near the village. It's set apart, quite secluded in the main glen, with several ways of reaching it by foot, shown in a leaflet of local walks (many of the estate paths are not marked on the OS map). It's run by the Venture Trust, affiliated to the SYHA. The hostel staff know the area well, having worked with Venture Trust for years, and provide a great welcome.

The location is perfect. I spent hours in the nearby heritage centre and church, fascinated by the local history. And of course there are the walled garden and its restaurant, the village itself, and the famous Inn. There are also walks further up the glen, grand views from the hills behind the hostel, and a footpath round to Sand. The village shop is several miles away - not so handy if you're on foot - but the mini shop at the hostel provides the essentials (and a neat system of deep frozen croissants for breakfast).

I had a two-bed room in the main part of the building (originally a hunting lodge). It has the inescapably institutional feel of all British youth hostels, but was perfectly clean, comfortable, quiet and convenient. As others have noted, not everything is finished (July 2013), but the staff were keen to hear suggestions.

Great addition to the SYHA network!
