Sunday evening and we had the restaurant to ourselves, while the food was good it felt like being in a morgue. The staff didn't help in making you feel welcome, you had to go to the bar counter to order your food and then return to pay after, even though they spent the whole time restocking and cashing up. Restaurants are a Service industry, perhaps the staff need reminding of that. Given that we had earlier in the day tried to book a room for the night and told that it was fully booked, it was strange to find the place empty. We first stayed in the hotel not long after the premises had been refurbished and the then new owner was very enthusiastic. Perhaps her enthusiasm has waned, the restaurant certainly looked like it had lost its charm. Pity!

We have now had lunch at this hotel four or five times and it just keeps getting better. Our most recent visit was totally enjoyable. The food was excellent, especially the raspberry cranachan which was the best I have ever had, and the service was friendly. The hotel has a very welcoming atmosphere, particularly on a dull or cold day with the cosy fire in he bar/restaurant area.

We stayed here for a night last week and were very impressed. Our room had a beautiful view out towards the water, was spacious and spotlessly clean. We ate dinner in the lounge in front of the wood fire. The menu has plenty of choice, including a lot of locally sourced items and was supplemented by "specials" boards for both starters and mains. It was also nice to see several of the Cromarty Brewing Company beers behind the bar, two of which are on draft. The staff were friendly and chatty throughout. I would definitely stay here again.

This is the second time we have stayed at this hotel and I can definitely say it has got better! The hotel has new owners since our first visit and it is so much better. The hotel has been refurbished to a very high standard without losing its wonderful homely feel. The room was lovely and spacious with a fantastic sea view. The food is first class and the welcome is also lovely, We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: lovely sea views

We chose the Royal because it had been recommended highly in several guidebooks. Our room lived up to the description - large, facing the Cromarty Firth. We loved the view! However, despite receiving friendly e-mails when we made the reservation and later confirming it, we found hospitality at the hotel totally lacking. We were one couple out of very few guests the middle of June. One morning we were the only guests at breakfast which changed rooms during the three days and nights we were there. We ate dinner our first night there in the conservatory, but found much better restaurants elsewhere in town. The breakfasts were very ordinary as far as food was concerned. I suggest the management implement a training course for all staff.
We thououghly enjoyed the town of Cromarty and the surrounding area. I simply advise another place to stay.

Room Tip: If you stay, ask for the room overlooking the firth.

Took a good friend & his family to dinner. Was surprised by the less than welcoming manageress.
Food was nice but over priced. My wife thought the puddings were rather 'brake' brothers for a chalk board menu.
I was disappointed by this, since I have been to the Hotel to eat several times & have enjoyed it.
Hopefully it was just an off day

We went here as a spur of the moment decision as we were in the area. We had read mixed reviews but decided to give it a go anyway. We were greeted by a very lovely older Lady, who was cheery and had a lovely smile on her face. She was very accommodating, even though we had no reservations she found us a table. She was chatty and we had quite a laugh with the other Staff too, especially as my Dad is half blind and gives everyone a laugh with his antics anyway. The Food was lovely, we ordered the Fish in a beer and herb batter, but my Son didn't want the beer or herb and asked for the batter plain, which was done no problem. The portions were massive, and the homemade chips were fantastic too, we struggled to finish them and the prices are reasonable. I would definately recommend eating here.
