After visiting relatives at Culboke my daughter and I took the scenic route home and stopped at the Royal in Cromarty for a belated birthday meal. I could not have chosen better. I was optimistic as last meal I had here was good, but last night's surpassed everything. The ambience of the lounge bar with open fire and comfortable seating is a good start. The bar man was welcoming and efficient. He indeed served us our meal. Daughter had a sirloin steak with a red wine sauce, and best of all the chips were homemade, not frozen. I settled for the beef stroganoff which was the best I've ever eaten. Portion was generous so declined dessert but daughter had the most amazing mango and lime cheesecake. Looked huge, beautifully presented but was as light as a feather. All in all, a very pleasing experience. We shall return. In fact may even stay the night so I can enjoy a glass of wine. for prospective customers wishing to stay there is also a pleasant conservatory which looks on to the bay. Wonderful place to relax with your book and a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Cromarty itself is an interesting place, full of history. There's also a good bakery, bookshop, antiques and for the adventurous, boat trips.

We came from southern California to spend a week in Cromarty in late November and were extremely delighted to find such fine food and a great selection of single malts! Every meal was an adventure of the most wonderful results. Jenny and her staff went out of their way to arrange the most delicious lobster dinner for my birthday and make it a very memorable evening. Be sure to try the haggis appetizers and the skink. Can't wait to go back to try some more of the menu and enjoy a wee dram or two!

January, nothing really ipen in the Highlands after Christmas and Hogmanay. To be expected of course, short daylight days, poorer weather, consumers short of spending money, establishments needing a rest themselves etc. How refreshing therefore to find a place bucking the trend and actually open! Wonderful warm, friendly welcome, gret menu suiting all tastes and pockets and a log fire too. Soup outstanding, mains extremely tasty and divine deserts, all for a most reasonable price. Cromarty is indeed fortunate to have a nice hotel with good relaxed facilities. When ladt there in September 2011, equally memorable but of course mucg busier.

The Royal Hotel offers a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere whether just popping in for a drink or for a meal. The food especially the steaks are exceptional and it's lovely that they are from the farm about 5 miles from the hotel front door.
The staff are friendly and great with children, my daughter loves if a walk or outing includes a detour via The Royal - hot chocolate for her, a Happy Chappy for daddy and a wee Sauvignon Blanc for moi!

Stopped off for lunch a few days ago. The seasonal turkey and cranberry ciabatta was lovely with thick slices of 'proper' turkey. The Cullen Skink is the best I have had. But getting the attention of staff in the first place, to buy food and drinks was difficult - we stood at the bar for 3 - 4 minutes and rang the bell twice before the person in the storeroom ( which was just 6 feet from the bar) acknowledged us - certain she knew we were there. Serving people for lunch at lunchtime should be a higher priority than sorting out the stockroom….

My wife and I went to the hotel for a meal. The setting was fantastic, a lovely open fire, friendly staff that looked after us all night. The food choice was unbelievable, their usual menu or specials brought out on a blackboard. I had the lamb shank from the specials board and my wife had chicken pie from the menu. The lamb was so tender & the special mashed potatoes, which must be the chef's secret recipe was in believable. My wife really enjoyed her meal and said the chicken was so soft. The portions were perfect, but by the time we came to the cheese cake we could only manage one between us. We passed our compliments to the chef on the night, but I'd like to take this opportunity to say it again. Thank you to the staff at The Royal, a lovely meal was had and we were treated wonderfully by the staff. I would advise anyone who is in Cromarty if they have the time and are hungry, pop in for a meal. The prices are really good, the good is amazing, and make sure you try the locally brewed Ale from the Cromarty Brewing Company. It made me a very "Happy Chappy" indeed.

With its great location this could be the place to eat in Cromarty but sadly the service and food didn't live up to the location. The staff were pleasant enough if you made a lot of effort to engage with them but surely if your in hospitality it should be the other way around. The food was expensive and disappointing not in terms of size but quality and we ate just one course and left. Sad to say we won't be going back.
