Review of East Church

East Church
Reviewed 28 March 2018

Just stumbled across the East Church when wandering through Cromarty. Now a redundant church it was full of history which you could sense. It is well worth a visit if you are in this area.

The church, which has not been used for worship since 1998, has been very well preserved by a charity I have never heard of but who clearly know their business. There is information on boards and in booklets in the church. It charts the history of the church for 4 centuries and is fascinating. It won’t take long-I’d allow 45 minutes- but I think it worth a visit.

We were just wandering through Cromarty when we came across the East Church. The exterior was interesting, but the interior was very special and in great shape. They have an extensive description of its past. Scotland is doing a marvelous job in preserving places like this that so easily could have been lost.

Cromarty is a delightful little town anyway but the East Church was most unexpected. Disused now but one of the most evocative buildings of its type we have seen in terms of a lifestyle now gone. The original pews, all of different sizes and the painted woodwork are just some of the interesting features on view. A must-see.

The church doesn't look anything from the outside, so we probably wouldn't have gone in, but as they were having a flower and art exhibition we ventured inside. The inside is beautiful and worth a look. The exhibition was an added bonus.
