“Birthday dinner”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 October 2012

We booked a table in the restaurant for a family birthday dinner for 7. On arrival we were welcomed into the main bar lounge area where we enjoyed a drink by the open fire and ordered our meals. Dinner was served in the main dining room which also had a lovely warm fire, sparkling lights, candles on the table and relaxing music too. We had a mixture of meals from the main menu and the mauritian menu, including sampling the veg/meat curries, breads, speciality rices and pickles all fabulous and very tasty, I had the chicken curry which was delicious. Dessert again a mixture from both menus, I had home made banana fritters in syrup absoloutley gorgeous again melt in the mouth pudding. Our hosts Phil and Serena were very accomodationg and made the evening very special for our birthday guest. I am lookin for ward to returning for more of their lovely dishes and to try the shiatsu massage one of their many hollistic treatments on offer.

Room Tip: We did not stay in the hotel, just had dinner.

This is a very friendly hotel with an atmosphere that I can only describe as happy and welcoming . Phil and Sarina are a little alternative which adds to the charm of this lovely old Victorian building. They could not have done more to make us feel at home. The Mauritian food is worth trying out and mother makes a marvellous Mauritian sauce that looks like cold mud and tastes like magic!
This is not an upmarket Hotel but it doesn't have upmarket prices it has a family feel and is affordable to match.

A very warm welcome from Phil and Sarina was the start of a gorgeous three days at the Richmond Hotel. We were offered the Rose Quartz room, which is beautifully created with two armchairs offering stunning views across the glen. Very close to the Village centre and with easy access to the surrounding hills. The traditional Mauritian food is definitely worth asking for...and free WiFi for those that need it. Excellent.

Thank you, the Rose Quartz room is my favourite bedroom in the hotel and not just becuase Rose Quartz is the crystal of unconditional love. So happy that you liked the Mauritian food, as far as we know we are the only place outside of London that has such a menu. Ours has the benefit of being truely authentic as it is cooked by Mauritians.

I visited Crystal House Retreat at the Richmond Hotel last week, I cannot praise the hotel enough. The en suite room was spacious and clean, with gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside, and a beautiful four poster bed :-)
Hosts Sarina and Phil are warm, friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic. Whether you take advantage of the holistic therapies on offer, or just use the hotel as a base for exploring the area, I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Thank you.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel have fantastic views

Thank you, it is lovely to know that people appreciate our warm and welcoming nature. Whether guests choose to take advantage of the many different therapies that are on offer or not the level of service remains the same. The beautiful peaceful location is one of the reasons that the hotel can also be a retreat and why we enjoy living here.

The hotel is full of character and beatifully located in amongst the surroundind countryside and hills,
When we arrived we were greeted by the very friendly owner Phil. When I explained to him that we were on a return visit to the hotel for my wife's birthday he upgraded us to his 'best room' free of charge which was a lovely gesture.
The room was spacious and comfortable with two armchairs that had stunning views over the surrounding hills.
We stayed for dinner/bed and breakfast and although the portion sizes were quite small, the food was very tasty. Again the views from the restaurant were stunning.
There was also a good selection of bottled beers and wines.
All in all we had a very pleasant stay.

Comfortable bed with ensuite bath/shower overhead. No central heating in the room so I'm glad it wasn't later in the year. No tv in the room so if that's important to you take note. Good breakfast choice.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2011

My wife and I stayed here for two nights while on holiday in Scotland.

The hotel is comfortable and well maintained. It is almost in the centre of Strathpeffer, just up the hill from the town square. It is a small hotel with around half a dozen rooms and is mercifully free of the coach tour trade that dominates most of Strathpeffer's hotels.

Phil and Sarina, who took over the hotel earlier this year, were welcoming and engaging. Sarina is originally from Mauritius and offers Mauritian food alongside a more traditional dinner menu.

We had a spacious superior deluxe room with a great view over the town. The room was well furnished with two excellent arm chairs, a coffee table and a radio/CD set, though oddly not a TV. The bathroom was good and we found the free wifi useful.

We did find a few things a bit puzzling.  We were asked to make our breakfast order by 9.30 each night, which is more "institutional" than we are used to. There was a good range of breakfast choices, including all the components of a full Scottish breakfast, but strangely no bacon. Most unexpectedly, when our room was serviced after our first night's stay our bed was left untouched. We later deduced we were expected to make it ourselves, which wasn't a problem, but isn't what we expect in a proper hotel.

So a few quirks, but overall a decent stay and we wish Phil and Sarina well.
