“Traditional Victorian Grand Hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2014

Imagine having to crouch over a 17 ins tv screen all weekend trying to watch the finals of the FIFA World Cup. This was the problem we faced staying at the Ben Wyvis Hotel where our superior, top floor room of 35 to 40 square yards could have comfortably accommodated a 37 or 40 ins flat screen tv set.
Strahpeffer is about 20 miles north of Inverness and is a once popular Victoria Spa Town of the 1860's and is still full of traditional hotels.
It now exists of coach tours from overseas and we had German, Italian and Spanish tours staying over the weekend. The Spanish and Italians were only interested in the food and the German in beating Argentina in the final of the world cup!
The Ben Wyvis is a traditional 'grand' hotel of yesteryear and is kept sparking clean with modern decor of dark red, browns and black colours. The 3-course dinner menu has a good choice and the breakfast is help yourself buffet!
Our bedroom was comfortable, but the bathroom toiletries consisted of one square of soap for two people for the weekend. There was no shampoo or body lotions and a total lack of paper tissues. This is a 3-star hotel catering for overnight coach tours so we must assume this is the reason there were no amenities at all available!
It all looks good on arrival, but once settled in, the lack of maintenance becomes noticeable. The double wardrobe in our top floor room leant forward by about 4 ins. It only needed a piece of wood cut and stained the same colour to go under the front to put it upright again.
The hot top for the bath and shower worked but the cold tap would not turn at all. Taking a shower was risking being scalded! The sash windows will not open as the pulley ropes are broken.
Crerar Hotels might like to consider employing a Clerk of Works to inspect their hotels on a regular basis. Also employimng their own teams of two "Jacks of all trades' to work on their hotels. They could be employed full-time on building, joinery, electrical, plumbing, plastering, painting and tiling work.
They could start by building a ramp to the front door for handicapped and wheelchairs. Also cleaning the brass work which is stained with age. The front hallway has a high antique table and half the surface is work away with use. All it needs to restore it is treatment with a bottle of stain of the right shade and polish. A few minutes work would return it to being a valuable piece of furniture!
The reception could be made 'user friendly' by taking away the high piece in the middle of the desk so that the reception staff could see the clients arriving!
If our room was a typical example, there is plenty of work for a 'hit squad' to carry out repairs!
The exterior of the hotel has metal hoops fitted to take hanging baskets, but none are in use. What a pity as it would make the hotel look as good as the surrounding gardens!
The hotel could easily be brought up to 4-star level by some simple improvements and some TLC. However, in its present state, it would fail the 3-star tests of Best Western in the USA.

Room Tip: There is a modern lift so request rooms on the top floor at the front.

Booked a two night break, £69 per person for two nights dinner, bed and breakfast through Classic Britain. Arrived to find glorious garden grounds and a stunning Victorian building.
Inside though it was a bit dated and could do with some TLC. All staff during our visit were very polite and helpful.
Room was large: twin with the two beds pushed together to create a double so only one bedside unit and light. Each wall light had a bulb missing and the room and bathroom were a bit tired looking. Shower, although warm was never really hot. Room at rear of the hotel so looked out onto roof of what appeared to be staff quarters.
Set menu dinner with a la carte available at a supplement, except on a Sunday when its set menu choice only. Food was good though.
Worth a visit at the price I paid and would return as it was enjoyable. Would ask for a room overlooking gardens though.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front overlooking the gardens

We enoyed a 2 night stay dbb for £69 with a 24hour flash sale with Easy Breaks. We were amazed at the price but even more amazed when we arrived at the hotel. The receptionist was very friendly and gave us information regarding meal times etc. Our twin room was very spacious with panoramic views over the grounds to the hills beyond. The ensuite had a large bath with modern shower attached. Plenty of tea, cofee and shortbread was provided. Our evening meal was served promptly and was excellent. No entertainment was provided but we watched tv in our room. Breakfas was great, sausage, eggs fried or scrambled, bacon, beans, black pudding, haggis, with toast and choices of jam or marmalade. It was great, couldnt fault it or the service. Would recommend this hotel to evrryone.

Room Tip: We had room 219

Stayed here for two nights on a bed and breakfast basis for a family wedding, 1st impressions building and grounds looked really good and well looked after shame it wasnt the same inside the hotel, room was disappointing for the price that was charged and the view we had was looking onto a roof and the room was small and pokey the bed was comfortable tho about the only good thing in the room, needs more attention to detail in public areas as there was alot of light bulbs blowen but have not been replaced an easy job that does not take a lot of doing considering there was a wedding

220 for 2 for 2 nights. our door hit our bed when the door was opened the room was that small, the wallpaper was split, and the room wasnt cleaned to good standard. staff were often abrupt and rude. not worth the money at all. a good nights sleep and a beautiful location but a bit of a let down to be honest.

A one night stay after Eden Court show - location was great. We were given a ground floor room which was ok. The whole place looks like it needs money spent on it. The dining room was freezing - big room to heat but paying guests deserve to be comfortable, it was warmer in the morning. Evening meal was ok but the chef needs to read up on how long to cook scallops edible but only just - cooked too long ! Breakfast was good. Staff helpful, Parking Ok. Glad we only had one night booked wont be back .

Room Tip: read reviews before you decide . If its a stop over then ok but find somewhere else for longer unles...

Stayed one night here. Externally the hotel looks lovely... However, it is in desperate need of updating with faded wallpaper and furniture. Squeaky floorboards resulted in little sleep and the restaurant had no atmosphere. How about a little music? Food satisfactory but little choice for breakfast too with no choice of variety of teas. Won't be staying here again.
