My husband below has said it all. For first time visitors it was hard to find.
Service was shambolic. I ordered a beer by name, it came in a glass with another name, then on the bill it was given a third name!
Food was very poor, we tasted 5 items!
Coffee & cake were dreadful.
I have not been served white sliced bread in a restaurant for many years, not one table wanted that.

We were warned by the B&B owner where we were staying outside Tain that the latter offered very little in the culinary stakes but this was the best. Sorry to say but it was far from good. We had a booking and were a few minutes late thanks to our satnav but we were asked to wait in the bar as it was busy. Maybe it was but one of the two dining areas was empty when we were taken through 15 minutes later and the main room next to the real station platform was half empty. I began to guess that they had staff problems. Certainly the serving staff was down to one plus a barman who occasionally popped through. Perhaps the same in the kitchen. Our waitress worked VERy hard, did her best and was pleasant throughout.
When the food came it was, sad to say, the least appetising and least enjoyable of our ten days in the Highlands. Even the “bread” was an insult. Each table had placed on it a small side plate with one slice per person of ordinary factory produced sliced bread. In the old days in Scotland when such was introduced we would joke that someone who was acting posh or above themselves was “pan loaf” as opposed to the traditional plain more coarse bread. This was no longer “pan loaf” and we noted that around us all those slices of bread lay untouched at table after table. That in itself said plenty.

I’d read a couple of recent reviews and wasn’t looking forward to our visit- how wrong!
The food was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced.
The service was a tad on the slow side but staff were extremely pleasant.
We are visiting from down south but our friends are local and will definitely return. All 4 had different dishes and all 4 thoroughly enjoyed our food!

Arrived about 19.30 not having booked to be told they were busy didn't look overfull but i think it must have been duty manager explained they had 2 largish groups so would be about a half hour wait - No problem we sat at the bar and had a drink kept well informed and after about 20 mins our food order was taken whilst at the bar and were soon being shown to our table .
Food very good and absolute nothing to complain about - So a very good overall experience made better by good communication

Returned here as it was good on our last visit to the area a year ago.
Arrived before 5pm to be told dinner isn’t served until 5:30pm, which wasn’t a problem although the guy behind the bar wasn’t overly helpful.
We said we’d have a drink until 5:30pm and were told we’d have to book as “it’s packed during Summer”. Strange, as we left after 7pm and only three other tables were occupied.
Food is decent but menu not as good as previous visits.
My wife asked our server for a cocktail menu who couldn’t produce one saying, if you let us know what you want we’ll see what we can do. Also strange as there is a huge sign outside (and on website) saying it’s a cocktail bar!
We intended returning later in our holiday but took our trade elsewhere (alternatives were much better too).
Won’t rush back unfortunately.
