The Aga make Burns cottage snug and warm , it has all the things you will need and we fully enjoyed our short stay. You will also need to plan your visit re-food and transport. Magnus kept an eye on us and advised us about when we would be able to leave. Foula is a unique experience - if you love peace and quiet it is ideal - the walk over the hills - on a fine day (as we had) is superb and you would go a long way to beat it - but then you have come as far as you go to get here!

My partner and I enjoyed our three nights at Burns Cottage; we could hear Mother Nature untainted by man-made sounds. It is interesting to read about the previous occupants of the cottage, and see some photos, in Foula - The Time of my Life by Christopher Mylne. This book can be found in the cottage.
We would recommend Burns Cottage to anyone who wishes to be self-sufficient and of the explorative and intrepid kind.
If you seek solitude and wildness, then Foula won't fail to impress.
Thank you.

Going to Foula was an absolutely wonderful experience and Burns Cottage was an ideal base for us on the island. The cottage is idyllic and offered everything we needed. After a long day's walk, we loved to relax and warm up again next to the aga, play a board game, or watch the beautiful Foula sheep, freely roaming Shetland ponies, snipes and bonxies from the kitchen window.
Magnus, who met us on the ferry to Foula, was extremely helpful and patiently answered all our questions about life on the island. He also helped us to get a guided walk with a member of the ranger service (outside their usual schedule) which was simply amazing and incredibly informative.

We had a fantastic time in 'magical' Foula! Having looked at it all my life, it was great to finally get there. We went to climb the 2 highest points (Marilyns!), and had no idea what to expect.
We were met at the ferry by Magnus who transported us to Burns - a lovely cottage. It reminded me of childhood holidays spent in traditional croft houses. Justyna and Magnus have done a great job setting this up for visitors. The oilfired stove kept us warm, the kitchen had all we needed to eat well. Lovely comfy beds, and a delightfully comfy new suite in the living room. We will definately be back - 2 days was not enough....Thank you :-)

“Perfect wild island”

Foula is a truly extraordinary place, and Da Burns is an ideal place (and pretty much the only place) to stay while on the island. It's located perfectly in the heart of its own valley, with only one other house in sight - and that almost a mile away. It was always cosy in the lounge, and kitchen facilities were as good for one person as they would have been for a family.
The owners were really accommodating and helpful, and over time everyone on the island was welcoming and friendly - though not always easy to meet, as croft houses tended to be a fair way apart from each other.
Be mindful of the potential transport delays: I was two days later than planned getting the first available flight to the island, and was glad I'd booked a 3-week stay. If you like walking and sheep, ponies and birds, Foula is paradise. Each of the 5 main hills takes between 45 and 75 minutes to walk up (energetically!), and the views and the ever-changing light are incredible. There really are no other islands like Foula. Imagine being the only visitor over a 3-week period, and having no opportunity whatever to spend money the whole time. This means you need to plan carefully and order your food in advance, but that's all part of the adventure. And you can buy souvenirs from Foula Enterprise at the school from 3 - 3.15 every day. Just ask for the 10 year-old sales manager!

Liked best: The time and space to unwind and reflect; the great location for walks to any part of the island.

Talk about getting away from it all! Huge sea cliffs, amazing wildlife, 360 degree views of the sea - if you climb to the top of The Sneug that is - and a lovely,no frills cottage to come home to. Cook on the aga, have some wine and whisky and look at the beautiful views through the windows.
