Dinner, bed & breakfast for my partners birthday, we had a meal in the resteraunt where I opted for the 4 course deal at £35. Recommend the scallops. The atmosphere is good and the service is excellent. Only bad point was the horrible background music but managed to ignore it. We stayed the night in the Foula room and it was clean and comfortable. Now for those of you that doesnt know, this place is 100s of years old and is packed full of character.

Beautiful room with sea view and leather sofa. Very comfortable mattress ( my wife suffers from a bad back if the mattress is not great, and no complaints there). Superb breakfasts especially the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

The hotel was very busy, but the steaks were great in the bar restaurant on our first night.
I made a poor choice of house white wine on the 2nd evening and my scallops were over-cooked.

We ate out at Frankies Fish and Chips in Bray on the 3rd evening (great langoustines).

But it is a great hotel overall and we will not hesitate to stay there again on our next holiday in Shetland

Room Tip: Phoning gets you a better room

Busta House was meant to be the best hotel in Shetland, which is why I stayed there. Goodness knows how bad the other hotels are! Of course, the hotel is not terrible, but I have given it this category to warn other seasoned International traveller's, like myself, to beware of the low overall hotel standards there must be in Shetland. Go to Busta House with half the expectations of an International traveller and think "quaint". The fact that it is an Old Laird's house is mostly what it has going for it, most else is mediocre at best.

Most staff were young, inexperienced, untrained and overworked. There was little sense of being welcomed and being welcome. The food was mediocre as was the water pressure in the bedroom showers and the TV and Internet reception.

I do not want to put you off going to Busta House, just do not expect global standards.

Billed somewhere as Shetland's fine dining experience we were really looking forward to calling for dinner. The welcome was warm, the service good but the food was far from fine dining! A delicious darne of salmon was tasty and well cooked but ruined by bones, including two pin bones. Moroccan lamb was tender, generous but should have been labelled "a hint of Moroccan". However as the puddings were good and very large all would have been forgiven except for the broccoli. It wasn't even fit for the compost heap! The symphony of colours in the two great conjoined florets were yellow, brown and puce. In case it was a new variety I tasted a morsel of it. It tasted worse than it looked! How any kitchen could have sent it out defies belief.

Our expectations were high as several people on Shetland had commented on how good the food and service was at Busta House.

We arrived later in the day (c4pm) and received a friendly welcome from Reception (a lovely Spanish lady!) who showed us to our room. The bedrooms are named after Shetland Islands and we were disappointed with 'Unst'. The room was dark, tired, cramped and had a view over the rock garden and the car park at the rear of the hotel. There was damp on the inside of the window and the wood around the top of the window frame was rotten (we were advised later that these were being replaced in the next couple of weeks).

We asked Reception if we could move to another room and as the hotel was full that night, they asked if we would remain in Unst that night and they would move us to another room the following day (we were staying 3 nights). The staff couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating. We had dinner in the bar that evening which was delicious (large portions!) and received good service.

We were booked on an otter trek the following day which meant that we would be too late to have dinner in the restaurant. Alberto kindly arranged cold platters of fresh sandwiches and sea food to be available to us on our return at 9.30pm. They even offered to cook a hot meal! You couldn't fault the service or attentiveness of the staff.

Our second room "Bressay" was larger, lighter and had a window overlooking the sea - what a difference! :-)

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a sea view!
