“Excellent hotel with a period advantage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

Busta House provides an excellent holiday location for guests with a car who wish to explore Mainland Shetland. Distances are not great to travel anywhere on the mainland. Alternatively there are wonderful views around the area and so much walking could be done in the Brae area from Busta House.

The delicious four course dinner was a delight in a quiet and attractive dining room with excellent and friendly service. Coffee was served afterwards in an equally attractive drawing room. Period features and matching furniture give this hotel its distinctive advantage. It has a feeling of being a special place and so guests feel that difference over new build hotels.

Our room was attractive, comfortable and it had all the facilities that one would normally expect in a hotel of this quality.

Booking was trouble free and communications were easy with prompt email responses from Busta House staff. The Reception staff were also friendly and always available.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to others and I certainly hope to visit the hotel again sometime.

We stayed for 5 nights in early July in the Papa Stour room. To be honest our stay didn't start well with half-a-dozen loud, drunk (presumably) oil workers 'occupying' the garden, shouting and breaking glasses - not pleasant.

Good points - As so many others have said, the staff are very friendly and cannot do enough to help (if I was rating on that alone it would be 5 stars). We went for the 4-course restaurant meals each night and the food was very good and the service excellent. Breakfasts likewise were all you needed, served when you wanted and set you up for the day.

Bad points - for the price, the room was very small and the bathroom was sorely in need of renovation. A great view from the little window but not worth three figures per night. As mentioned at the start, the hotel does see a fair number of workers from Sullom Voe etc. and these people do not seem to be able to behave appropriately - foul language in the car park, personal radios blaring in the breakfast room, rudeness to the staff, and so on. I realise they probably make a significant contribution to the finances of the hotel - but I can't help thinking that the odd reminder about respecting other guests (and the staff) wouldn't go amiss.

Overall, I would recommend a stay, just don't expect too much.

Enjoyed our stay. Beautiful view from room overlooking the Voe (water) behind. Room quite old style, but very clean with all necessary comforts and good bed. Friendly staff. Very well looked after. Bar food menu was super. You won't leave hungry! Extremely extensive whisky menu to choose from. A good base to explore from - especially as a jumping off point to the islands of Yell and Unst further to the north. Day trips to these easily possible from here, but book your ferry. Explore nearby gorgeous Muckle Roe and Eshaness. Very happy stay all round.

We were initially concerned that Busta was 20 miles North of Lerwich and 40 miles north of Sumborough and much siteseeing was to the South. However, the views from our bedroom were the best we enjoyed during our visit to the Orkneys and Shetlands. The meals in the restaurant were also excellent and we would suggest that guests ask for 'modest' portions as the 'normal' servings are more than we could eat. We especially recommend driving even further north to find excellent walks and a very different Shetland from that to the South.

Good points: location, food, staff
Bad points: the place looks like painting, landscaping, garden decor and the rest are certainly not a priority! Which is a true shame! They have several benches outside but I wouldn't recommend sitting on them - the last time they met a paint brush must have been decades ago.
The rooms could do with a serious floor replacement, the walls with some paint etc.

Dinner, bed & breakfast for my partners birthday, we had a meal in the resteraunt where I opted for the 4 course deal at £35. Recommend the scallops. The atmosphere is good and the service is excellent. Only bad point was the horrible background music but managed to ignore it. We stayed the night in the Foula room and it was clean and comfortable. Now for those of you that doesnt know, this place is 100s of years old and is packed full of character.

Beautiful room with sea view and leather sofa. Very comfortable mattress ( my wife suffers from a bad back if the mattress is not great, and no complaints there). Superb breakfasts especially the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

The hotel was very busy, but the steaks were great in the bar restaurant on our first night.
I made a poor choice of house white wine on the 2nd evening and my scallops were over-cooked.

We ate out at Frankies Fish and Chips in Bray on the 3rd evening (great langoustines).

But it is a great hotel overall and we will not hesitate to stay there again on our next holiday in Shetland
