St. Magnus Bay Hotel
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Hillswick
Reviewed 29 June 2012

After moving out of a grim hotel in Lerwick, I wanted somewhere more homely and comfortable. The St. Magnus Bay Hotel gave me that and more. The owners, Paul and Andrea, are very nice people who are very helpful and will spend time telling you about the fascinating history of this unique hotel and things to do and see in the area.

Other than the great hospitality, the best aspect of the hotel is its location. It sits just above the bay in Hillswick and has a large hill behind it, which is good for a walk (take your camera for the view). There are 2 beaches quite close by, affording ample opportunity to go walking and maybe beach-combing (I found some lovely shells and stones on the pebbly beach). It is also close to some of the best scenery the Shetlands has to offer at Eshaness and Braewick.

I marked it down a point for a couple of minor things. Firstly, the hotel is undergoing some lengthy renovation works, so there are parts of the hotel that are in a little disrepair. My room was newly-decorated, but the bed was over-soft for my liking. The other minor moan is about the breakfast. It's a buffet/carvery affair and this can mean you end up with dry bacon and sausages if you don't get there early (start serving at 6am, I believe). The staff were good enough to make me some fresh scrambled eggs on request, so it's all good really. At other meals, the food is good, hearty, home-made fare coming in generous portions. If you partake in the Sunday Carvery, make sure you have your appetite with you.

I came to the hotel on business but would love to come back with my family on holiday.

We came here with family and friends for a meal. The hotel is quite imposing from the front as it is so large. Apparently, the hotel was shipped across the North Sea from Norway, in fact it reminded me of something off the film The Shipping News. It looked as if major renovations were being carried out, indeed parts of the bar were really shabby. However the dining room was impressive and the food was really lovely, although the service was pretty slow, but to be fair they were very busy the night we ate there. I would reccommend dining here and would eat here again if given the chance.

The hotel is mid way through its refurbishment. Our room was comfortable & clean. The sitting room again spacious, clean and very comfortable.wifi available, Paul &Andrea were very helpful we through their advice and recommendations saw many sights of Shetland which we would have otherwise missed e.g.on Yell and Unst. Food fantastic, hospitality great. Would recommend again and again. Wow !

This hotel was just what we wanted. The drive from Lerwick was easy and the roads clear. It's a great, well run but easygoing place with friendly locals and great food. The steaks were large and well cooked by the chef. Seafood fabulous.

We liked the large, newly decorated room. Everything in the hotel was clean and well ordered. I even walked into the kitchen by accident and it was spotless.

There is no lift but if you are upstairs the actual staircase was one of the few in a Shetland hotel that I could walk up with ease (I am disabled and walk with a stick).

The owners have a renovation project but it is low key and didn't intrude on our stay. The renovated rooms are sparkling, well furnished and everything, (including the beds) was new.

From the windows we could see the water and hear the bird song in the mornings. It was the peace and quiet that I loved here most of all. We are planning to return for a longer stay. This is a hotel that one can feel at home and relax in.

Room Tip: ask for one of the newly renovated rooms.

Didn't stay here, but came for Sunday lunch.
Started with a really lovely mushroom soup and then the carvery: This is a good concept for an area that is not highly populated and people like plain good home cooking. The service was good to average, the food was well cooked and very tasty and the atmosphere was relaxing. We will be back!
For visitors thinking of staying, Paul and Andrea have clearly done a huge amount to renovate and upgrade what a few years back had become a relic of byegone days. Congratulations to them for their dedication.

Having packed jumpers and jeans were thrilled to have to apply suncream due to fantastic weather! Our stay was topped by the lovely surroundings, accommodation and friendly staff at this establishment. Andrea, the owner, was even able to arrange transport for us from Sumburgh airport! The rooms were very clean and decorated to a high standard. The food was lovely and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff on duty at the time. Met alot of extremely friendly locals in the bar in the evenings, some of whom told us the best places to take our walks, and where best to view the amazing local wildlife. Already booked for another visit during October.
