“Birders base”
Reviewed 17 January 2014

We have stayed at the Sumburgh hotel on two occasions as a base for birdwatching on the brilliant shetland. Both visits were in autumn( we return again in September 2014 for 2 weeks) our immediate impression was a grand old house which required modernisation to bring it to a standard which reflected the cost of staying there and for the comfort of the guest. Besides that the overall stay was very good. The staff are a great bunch of people , helpful, friendly, good humoured and welcoming. The food we found was good, there liver and onions with red cabbage is something to die for it's no nonsense good food.As birders it is well situated to cover the birding sites .On our 2 visits we were independent visitors and part of a birding group run by the excellent Shetland Wildlife (Hugh harrop's company based on mainland shetland), Overall our stay at the Sumburgh was very good and can't wait to return.

It is many years since I last stayed at The Sumburgh Hotel (an enforced stray due to bad weather at my offshore destination). I recently had to visit Shetland for a reunion and celebration and am pleased to say my stay at the Sumburgh Hotel was most enjoyable. The courtesy bus quickly picked us up from the airport and also took us to another location after a quick change. Our room was very comfortable with a nice view over the bay. Breakfast and dinner were enjoyable and I must mention that the buffet and bar service provided for the reunion was excellent. All members of staff we met were both helpful and friendly which was much appreciated.

Room Tip: Try and get a room that overlooks the bay.

Perfectly located for the airport and accommodating with breakfast being served from 6am which ideally allowed us to eat before early morning flight. The room was ok but not the largest and was well equipped and really clean. Noisy bustling place with many workers staying here and was wakened at 5 am with people opening doors and brung far too noisy in corridors. The staff pleasant although when arrived in lounge to have a bar meal stood waiting for good few minutes while staff finished their wee gossip and felt uncomfortable.... Food was average and atmosphere was hood in the lounge area... Breakfast pretty standard and tasty ... Pretty expensive though but has captive audience being so close to airport.

Room Tip: I was in main area first floor and was noisy

The Sumburgh seems to have a captive audience with aircrews, airport workers and travelers due to it's location being about 2 minutes from the airport. This gives it a bustling feel and could maybe leading them to being complacent as they will probably always have that captive audience

The staff were attentive, polite and helpful and the breakfast was good and served with efficiency. The evening meals were more quantity than quality but ok all the same.

However, where the Sumburgh let's itself down is the accommodation. The bedrooms are beginning to date and the the bathrooms in the two rooms I stayed in were definitely rough around the edges with dirty grouting, pealing paint and wallpaper and mould - Maybe it is time for a refurb?

Like many places in Shetland the Sumburgh Hotel probably had a major refit when the oil money arrived. There must have been a blizzard of anaglypta which they clearly repaint regularly but it's entirely escaped more recent fads of interior design.

Most importantly - it's really clean, the beds were really comfy, the shower works. It has everything you need, it's in one of the most beautiful locations in the world and the staff are super friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay there again.

Had a room in the annex which was basic and comfortable. Staff were pleasant and helpful, food was reasonable in price and reasonable if your hungry. Great location within spitting distance of the airport with fantastic sunsets at the front of the hotel. Would I stay here again? Yes I would.

Stayed here for one night as we needed easy access to Sumburgh Airport for work. Rooms generally clean although the skirting was in need of a good dusting. Bed was comfy, room was warm and well fitted with tea/coffee making facilities. Great view, but was very creeky with floors noisy and windows and doors rattling in the wind. Bathroom very dated and shower was DIRE! No more than a trickle of water which alternated between scaldingly hot and bitterly cold. This really needs sorting.
Wifi also totally unusable in many parts of the hotel and in my room I could connect but it took about 5 minutes to load a single web page. Again, this is not good enough in this day and age.
Food passable. I had a steak which was good, my collegue had chicken breast which was not. Others in my party had good fish and chips, but poor lasagne. The key here seems to be don't order anything which could possibly have been pre-cooked for reheating.
I'd put this firmly in the "airport hotel" class - you'd only really choose to stay here for easy access to LSI.
