Worth the 60 mile trip from Lerwick, two ferries and a 4k trek across the moor on a boardwalk to reach the atlantic cliffs and fabulous bird life. The walk from the car park took 45 minutes (67 year olds). Take a short stick as the great arctic skua nest on the moor and are protective of their nesting sites and are fearsome looking birds -- they swoop and rarely attack!

Hermaness was enhanced by it being a lovely day, but an amazing experience to walk out through all the Bonxie nests to the sea cliffs, to see the gannets, puffins at close quarters and to look out to Muckle Flugga. It,s quite a long walk but we liked that. A tea room would be nice.

Very informative warden whose enthusiasm was infectious. She listened to our experiences with interest. If you can manage the walk continue to the most northerly tip overlooking the Muckle Flugga and see the large colony of gannets. Mind the bonxies...!

Allow yourselves at least 4 hours to walk in and return from the headlands where you will see literally thousands of different birds, Gannets, Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Great Skuas and Arctic Skuas, and many more. Wonderful displays as they fly past.
Make sure that you continue on to see Muckle Flugga and its lighthouse, and the skerry that is Britain's full stop!
Also make a trip over to the next headland at Saxa Vord - again a superb view of Muckle Flugga, even more Bonxies and a wider variety of birds. We ignored the old MOD signs - MOD left many years ago but have left in their wake a trail of rubbish dumped over cliffs, why? if this was in England what an outcry there would be! - just lift the barrier gate and drive or walk to the old RAF radar/radio base. Continue on for some stunning views along the cliffs.

Even though we did not have good weather the walk was worth everything, including great photo's of Puffins.......worth all the time and effort.
