My wife and I [both over 60] went on a grey, damp day and trudged across the peaty moorland under overcast skies - but the views across to the nesting birds on Muckle Flugga were amazing and definitely worth the effort.

Huge seabird colonies of Gannets, Puffins, Fulmars, Razorbills etc. Access to the cliffs is through a boardwalk across nesting areas of the Great Skuas. The boardwalk makes walking the distance much easier, and the views all around you are fabulous. If you are brave enough to cling on the edges of the cliffs you will be rewarded with great lookouts and very close up views of thousands of gannets. Near the puffin colonies, all you have to do is sit quietly and be amazed as these birds come closer and closer to you in their curiosity.

Try to pick a dry day to visit, as the site is totally exposed to the elements and it is a long walk with nowhere to rest or hide. The visitor centre is a good place near the car park to look at the map and the warden's notes, but there are no facilities for refreshments anywhere nearby so bring your own munchies and tea.

My wife and I visited Hermaness NNR during our recent visit to Shetland. Excellent information Centre and leaflet. Good sightings information board. Toilets available, spotless. The walk across Hermaness is a must. As a keen birder I was amazed at the number of Bonxies (Great Skua), and how close one can get to them. Just an amazing experience, a true wilderness. Not to be missed. highly Recommended.

Worth the 60 mile trip from Lerwick, two ferries and a 4k trek across the moor on a boardwalk to reach the atlantic cliffs and fabulous bird life. The walk from the car park took 45 minutes (67 year olds). Take a short stick as the great arctic skua nest on the moor and are protective of their nesting sites and are fearsome looking birds -- they swoop and rarely attack!

Hermaness was enhanced by it being a lovely day, but an amazing experience to walk out through all the Bonxie nests to the sea cliffs, to see the gannets, puffins at close quarters and to look out to Muckle Flugga. It,s quite a long walk but we liked that. A tea room would be nice.
