Cosses Country House
Ranked #2 of 5 Ballantrae B&B and Inns
Reviewed 4 June 2014

We have stayed several times at Cosses and never disappointed. The location is is hidden away amongst the hills outside Ballantrae but located near so many activities from fishing to golf ( thats me catered for ) country and sea walks and of course all the historic points of interest.

Remember how close it is to some serious international golf links.

And of course 20 minutes from the ferries to Northern Ireland.

Did I mention that the host is a serious cook and you can take dinner at Cosses, exceptional and just a short walk back to your accomodation.

We felt really at home here. Cosses Country House is tucked away out of sight of the road and right from the start we were able to relax in the beautiful garden. Our accommodation consisted of 3 rooms - living room, bedroom and really spacious bathroom. Although we hadn't experienced Wolsey Lodges style hospitality before (sharing all meals with other guests) we found our fellow guests delightful company. Susan and Robin were brilliant hosts (even though preparations were well under way for their daughter's wedding at the time). The food was all freshly prepared and much of it picked from the garden (what wasn't was locally sourced). Susan is an accomplished cook and all of the meals were beautifully prepared and presented and really delicious. Our only real regret was that we hadn't booked to stay longer! Worthwhile trips out from Cosses were Portpatrick, Culzean Castle and the Rattray Whisky Experience (but make sure you're not driving!!)

We visited toward the end of a 3 week tour, mostly of Scotland, and frankly I was getting a bit worried as we wandered farther and farther from the main road down a well-maintained, but quite unpopulated secondary road. Would this be some sort of not-so-good experience in an otherwise wonderful vacation? Short answer: this place deserves ten stars--the Iona suite we stayed in was resplendent--in fact, we seriously debated cancelling our next planned stop when we learned that they had the room available. The rooms are spacious, beautifully appointed, and the bathroom equally spacious with both a tub and a shower. My wife had booked dinner as we were concerned that dining places would be few, and that proved both wise and a delight--drinks in their exquisite sitting room (with a wood fire to ward off the midsummer chill that set in that day) (Oh, that I was still sitting there, sipping smokey single malt!) and the multi-course dinner was easily the equal of any meal I've had at high-end resorts in the states--only served in an intimate dining room with impeccable place settings and personal service. While the accommodations and food were well into the luxury level, these are very down-to-earth folks...when the neighbor's cows turned up, prancing in the front yard, they readily accepted our offer to help round them up (we are horse/and animal folks who lived in rural areas for years). Not every day you get such sweet accommodations and an impromptu round-up experience! If you're looking for some serious down-time where simply being on site is a pleasure in itself, this is the place to go...and stay!

We very much enjoyed out stay at Cosses House. Although we were the only guests at the time, Susan made us feel totally at home. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent, with many ingredients from her own lovely garden. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous as well and we went for a lovely walk with help from the maps provided at the B&B. Highly recommended.

Far away from the maddening crowd, this is a charming and welcoming farmhouse. Very comfortable accommodation, in fact exceedingly so and Susan's cooking (Dinner and Breakfast) made this a delightful stay. We stayed with Susan at the start and end of our holiday in Scotland and it really made our trip a memorable one. It was the first time we choose Cosses Country House and it won't be the last and we cannot recommend it highly enough.
Dinner and breakfast were eaten at a communal dining table, which was terrific as it allowed us to continue our discussion with another couple who were there. We met in the lounge with a big fire and had a delicious single malt whiskey, of which the House has a grand selection. And on the recomendation of the Lady of the House I had very unusual and very interesting new single Malt. The wine list had an attractive and competitively priced choice too. Dinner is a set menu, which at the time of making the reservation we were asked if we had any dislikes/allergies etc and the Lamb we had on the first night and the Monkfish (to die for) on the second night would do justice to any 4* restaurant. There were Home-made jams and marmalades plus, I am sure, the herbs and veg (in season) come from the extensive kitchen garden.
I took a pre-and post dinner stroll in the grounds and was delighted to see deer passing through the grounds and a host of other wild life, including a resident Hare.
Susan's tips for seeing the area were much appreciated and it is very handy to the Cairnryan ferry port. Wi-Fi is available and a good signal for those interested.
This house has a delightful and a charming Hostess and family. The title says it all. Thank you Susan. PS the dog is doing well after his surgery.

Room Tip: Book well in advance
