I traveled with a small group who occupied all of the rooms. This seems like more of a restaurant (which is very good) with a few rooms upstairs than a hotel.

One in my group travels to Scotland annually and always stays here when visiting Edinburgh and Coulter. The owners and staff are great folks and very accomodating...even doing some laundry for me in a pinch at no charge.

The hotel itself is old and quite worn but was clean enough for these old bones. Please note that my room was the only one with a shower attachment in the tub. If you're expecting the Ritz, this isn't it. But all-in-all it was more than acceptable for the price.

Breakfasts were hearty and tasty.

My wife and I recently stayed for one night at the Elphinstone Hotel during a tour around Southern Scotland.

The Hotel is also a pub and a restaurant as well as offering accommodation.

The room (a double) was rather basic, with shabby fittings and a bath which could at best be described as grubby! It was also rather cold, though it should be noted that our visit was in the depths of December.

The bar and restaurant were small but pleasant, with the added feature of a blazing coal fire - very welcome! (see above paragraph) The food was reasonably priced and actually of a very high standard. The restaurant seems to be popular with local diners.

Biggar offers limited attractions for tourists, and visitors should be aware that most of these will be closed during the winter. On a more positive note though, there is ample free parking throughout the town giving a pleasant respite from harrying traffic wardens!

In conclusion, the Elphinstone was slightly below the standard of similarly priced hotels that we experienced on our trip. This was mainly due to cosmetic failings and lack of attention to detail, which means that such faults could be easily rectified to bring the Hotel up to a more acceptable level.
