Review of Caol Ila Distillery

Caol Ila Distillery

Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Caol Ila distillery is one of Islay’s best kept secrets. Situated on the North West of the Island, your initial approach takes in amazing views over the Sound of Islay and over to the Paps of Jura. The distillery itself hugs the coastline, the old dunnage warehouse that dates back to 1900 guards the stunning glass fronted still house. This George Leslie Darges styled building houses the six impressive copper stills which stand guard over the Sound of Islay. Allow some time to take a tour and experience whisky production at its best. Embracing both old and new technologies while utilizing skills going back generations, the distillery produces a well balanced, lightly smoked whisky, punctuated with fruit, spice and a little salt. Complete your visit with a tasting in the atmospheric surroundings of the old cooperage where you can experience some of Caol Ila's world class single malts.

“Distillers Edition is a must.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

I am a lover of the Caol Ila (kul Illa) brand, and have tasted the 12 year old many times. So you can imagine when rolling the car off the ferry, and only being 3 miles away, it was a must place to visit. I didn't take the tour of the distillery, but knew I wanted to pick up a special bottle. After tasting the Distillers Edition, I was sold, stunning.

Gorgeous surroundings, a must visit if you are on Islay.

“Enjoyable Tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2014

Caol Ila is the biggest distillery on Islay by far. You have to go there - if only to see the scale of the operation. The Still House is gargantuan - with enormous windows offering a stunning view over to the Paps of Jura. The modest visitor facilities do not measure up to the scale of the distillery and the tour is very "corporate" in comparison to others. There's a religious adherence to "Elf & Safety" (e.g. You can't photograph is the still house - overkill on risk analysis perhaps?) Lindsay - our tour guide - was brilliant and made up for any short-comings of the big company ...She did a great tour with all the info you could desire. A great and confident teacher. I recommend a tour of Caol Ila.

“Another good one”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

Another good distillery on Islay. It has a beautiful position overlooking the Sound of Jura. Very friendly and informative staff. They even had a breakfast whisky to try!! Watch out for the large red deer that hangs around the edge of the road there!!

“For the dedicated whisky lover”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2014

This is very much a working distillery and not the all-singing, all-dancing tourist attraction that several of the Islay distilleries have become.

If you are interested in Malt whisky, this is for you. But it is not for the casual visitor probably. It may also be the least aesthetically pleasing of all the Islay distilleries. But it produces an excellent result!

“Lovely location”

The location is lovely, unfortunately my tried the whiskey and did not like it so we decided against a tour, the visitors centre was limited.
