“Islay at its best”
Reviewed 26 August 2014 via mobile

The most important thing at first: all of us felt really sorry when we had to leave Islay and everybody from the Port Charlotte Hotel who helped and made our visit such a wonderful experience! We travelled with quite a large group of 8 and once we arrived on Islay absolutely everything was taken care of by our wonderful guide Frazer and everybody else at the hotel! Whether it be to fit visits and tastings at all of Islays distilleries in one week, or provide an extra shuttle for two of our group who missed their flight and had to be picked up at Port Askaigs ferry terminal! Frazer took care of us, showed us beautiful spots all over the island, was willing to try and answer every question we had and even arranged a dinner with Coal Ila Distillery Manager David Wood on the last night of our stay! We simply got more out of our stay than we had imagined!
For the hotels part everything was just fantastic! The location right on the beach and the beautiful view over Loch Indaal were great. The rooms all had a wonderful classic style to them, the restaurant made a splendid job for breakfast and dinner each and every night!
As a conclusion we'd like to recommend this hotel and its fantastic people to everyone wanting a special and warm home base for their exploration of this wonderful island!
We had a brilliant time and already think about coming back in the future.
Cheers.
The Eller family

Stayed here recently after hearing a lot about how good the hotel was and was not disappointed. The room, a single was large enough for two people and very comfortable with delightful decor. The atmosphere in the bar was terrific and very friendly. There were local musicians playing at night and the place was absolutely "buzzing". Food in the restaurant was first class and for an island hotel you would expect fresh delicious fish, I was not let down as my fish could have been caught that day. Met the owner and his wife at different times and both were very pleasant individuals who made you feel really at home. All the staff were a credit to the hotel and made my stay really enjoyable.

We visited for dinner and had fantastic local food. Tasty lamb, excellent scallops, melting beef and yummy puddings. The wine list and malt menu are both extensive and offer lots of choice. We were well looked after and I cannot fault their hospitality. The music on a Wednesday night is great beside the fire and I wish we had more time to sample more of everything! We will hasten back!

My husband and I spent three nights at this hotel, we were greeted by a very nice lady and shown to our room, as we were paying top dollar for this room we really expected something wonderful. The room was small and to our mind not nicely furnished, some folks may think it was cute but in fact it was just old furniture with not very well fitting doors in the wardrobe. The TV was so high up the wall you got a crick in your neck watching it. We do not like to sit on our bed to watch the TV (not that we spent a lot of time doing this) but really had to, yes, there were two chairs in The room but dining room chairs are not our idea of comfort to relax in. The bathroom was lovely and modern and a very good size with beautiful white fluffy towels. The bedding was also very nice, but the bed was not comfortable. We only ate in the bar one night and we were not impressed as it was overpriced food, not what we would consider "bar food" On the whole we found this hotel to be very much overpriced, we do appreciate it is an island hotel but feel really need to up its game. And reduce it's prices, £30 per night less would have been more like it as £190 B&B is just way too much for a 3 star (in our opinion) hotel.

Room Tip: As we only saw one room can't really help

We are disappointed by your comments and would like to respond as follows. The room is furnished with antiques and soft furnishings in quality Laura Ashley fabrics. The chairs are antique and not dining but casual Edwardian chairs. The television is on a swivel and can be arranged to suit by guests. Our pricing is comparable to all island four star hotel and in fact is not the most expensive. We also do not punish single occupancy with a double room rate. Our food is considered among the best on the island both in our bar and restaurant which you did not visit. You did have only two lamb casseroles from the bar and I consider a perfect example of a bar meal. We offer a special winter rate each year running from October to March and this includes dinner, bed and breakfast. This proves very popular in the winter months. Our four star grading is awarded by Visit Scotland annually following a very comprehensive and stringent assessment. We have held this grading for the past twelve years and are proud of this achievement. I hope this clears up the points you have raised and that you enjoy future visits to our beautiful island.

Staying here with friends for a long weekend. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere with super friendly staff. Gorgous food with a huge Scottish breakfast to kick the day off. Room 1 is the best. We had 10 which had great view and quiet and good size for a twin room. Room lacks glasses for water and no half. blind on a window that looked out onto houses at the front. You cant fault the location and views....just stunning. Oh and electric wood burner was rather sad in the lounge area. Otherwise totally recommend it.

The usual warm Scottish welcome has not rubbed off on the surly Yorkshire/Lancastrian barman.
I was given a large wine automatically and a black tea total £8 take it or leave it with no explanation. The staff do their best despite this man's arrogant attitude.

All prices and measures are displayed in the bar. Our standard measure for wine is 175ml, we do not have any other measure. We believe that 250ml is too large with the same respect 125ml too small and only encourages another glass which in turn leads to 250mls. We have never had a complaint on pricing regarding tea and wine by the glass. We use Inverarity Morton wine supplier they are considered one of the best quality distributors in Scotland. Our tea is supplied by Mathew Algie and again top quality. The barman is from Halifax and does a sterling job behind the bar. I will pass on your comments and discuss your point.

This hotel is great. It is furnished beautifully throughout with charming paintings and comfortable furniture that is also stylish. The location is wonderful. The views from every bedroom window were amazing. It is right next to a lovely sandy cove too. Breakfasts were good but evening meals were excellent. They can be taken in the warm , welcoming, busy bar or in the stylish restaurant. This hotel is at the heart of the community and as a first time visitor to Islay , it meant we sampled Scottish hospitality. There was a local folk band performing when we arrived which added to the ambience. We would happily have stayed longer although it is on the pricey side!

Room Tip: All rooms have a sea view.
