“Beautiful, peaceful cottage”

My partner and some friends had a brilliant time staying in one of the cottages. WE had a lovely warm welcome and there were nice little touches like a packet of yummy 'tablet' on arrival. The cottage was clean and very warm - warm enough to not need the fire, but we lit it anyway and really enjoyed the experience of drinking excellent Islay whisky, on Islay, in front of a roaring peat fire! The location is peaceful and very scenic. Would very much love to stay here again!

“Beautiful spot :)”
Reviewed 1 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Booking this cottage was extremely simple and there were no unpleasant surprises. Well equipped and comfortable - really enjoyed using the open fire! Walking distance to the beach. Lots of birds to watch if you like that type of thing. Peaceful :) Thanks, hope to return one day!

Beautiful place, lovely people, great location yes, to all of these, however lovely island life and expectations were dashed on arrival. We arrived on the last ferry of the day 5pm, we did take a couple of wrong turns and forty minutes later we found the road up to Kilmachom and a further 20mins of single track (well tarmacked) where cows and sheep roam free and locals can come at you at an alarming pace so pay attention! We were met and greeted cordially and shown around by the owner who made us aware of the location of the beach, which for us with a member of the party with mobility issues meant taking the car and even then a bit of a walk through the dunes...but so worth it, Machair beach is stunning...but beware! there are very few signs and there are no facilities near here. No shop, no restaurant - nothing close by that is open (there is a distillery a wee bit down the road that serves food but not after 5pm. This would not be a problem if there had been a few teabags or sachets of coffee and milk perhaps even a biscuit or two from the wonderful Island bakeries brand and a heads up that at this time of year if you want to eat ANYWHERE on the island you HAVE to book in advance. We were left to drive around without any reference as to what might be open - by chance we headed back toward Port Askaig and found a Spar and the man there told us we were lucky as he was experimenting with a late opening time as the rest of the island shut up shop at the latest 5pm. Yes there was an email saying that we would have to bring our own food, but a wee welcome basket of the necessities to allow one to make a cup of tea at least on arrival would have been really good customer service. A service you can get in all B&B's wherever you go really that don't cost as much. Towels, yes you can ask for more of them but why would you have to? Hand and tea towels provided. The mattress on the double bed was very hard and the pillows were less than plump. Minor things perhaps but when you don't get a good sleep it tends to effect the pleasure of the holiday. The island is beautiful, and so clean it's a wee paradise and it's expensive to eat out. So do take your basics (when I say basics that includes oil, butter, sauces, cereals actually everything! You cannot come here expecting to have anything but cutlery, and crockery and cooking utensils when coming to these cottages, and perhaps your own pillow, call ahead to the hotels and restaurants and book a meal if you don't intend to cook on the first night. The only pharmacies are in Bowmore, Port Charlotte is lovely as is Port Ellen but facilities are limited if you need to pick up something from the chemist or see the doctor in an emergency. If you are looking for standing stones again NO SIGNS, or very few and most of them are on private land ALWAYS ask permission the farmers get no support from tourist agency or councils so they really don't need to allow you access. Bowmore can be bright and lively but for the most part the island is slow and quiet. don't expect to do much on the computer, they say there is WiFi but it is minimal and almost non existent - In the cottages if the weather is bad and you are inside there is an adventure waiting for you to try to find the channels that are accessible - though truly you are not there to watch the telly! It is not such a large place but it is also Whisky oriented this too is bloody expensive. Given all of that and that when you come here you will really love it if all you want to do is watch birds, they have a pair of nesting Golden eagles and some Choughs - if you love to beach comb and are into bracing Atlantic winds, be prepared to drive EVERYWHERE as there is only the beach in walking distance really. All that aside it is the most restful place and I would advise that you look at all the spaces available matching them to your needs - if you want pub and shop in walking distance this is not the place for you - somewhere in Port Charlotte or Bowmore or Port Ellen might suit you better. Take time to explore there is a lot going on but you really have to be prepared to seek it out. Finlaggin we found on our way back to the ferry on our last day, and it was actually signed and had a visitor centre. It was well kept and yes you have to pay a couple of quid to get in. They deserve it, it is worth it when you realise it is what it takes to have access to historical landscape. So yes with all this in mind I would recommend this place to others as long as they were completely informed as to the location and facilities for their needs and expectations to be met.
