We stayed for two nights at Askernish and wish it could have been longer. Ideal location for ferry and exploring the island, particularly visiting whisky distilleries. Joy, the owner was most welcoming and the accomodation and breakfast couldn't be faulted. Islay Hotel next door for good food and drink and can recommend the music there on a Sunday afternoon.

Room Tip: We had the two ground floor rooms, which had been the doctor's consulting room and the waiting r...

Pretty much the first building you come across when exiting the ferry (but it's a sleepy town, so no noise concerns). Right next to the pub where you can sample some single malt and scampi. Joy appears to be a great fan of the local produce as well and has a few bottles stored (I never made use of them though for the above reasons). Her breakfasts are wonderful. And she is very helpful and friendly.

She's actively working on even more improvements to the property but I thought it was perfect already. Do stay for a minimum of 3 nights so you can spend a day at each local distillery.

We booked Askernish B&B after seeing the reviews on Tripadvisor and it certainly lived up to it's superb reputation. Excellent room with a lot of thought having gone into making sure there was everything you could need in the room. Joy the owner is brilliant, wonderfully warm hospitality, nothing is too much trouble. Will we be back, I hope so!

Absolutely fantastic location...literally a hop, skip and a jump from the ferry terminal. The b&b is in the old Doctors surgery and it has lovingly kept some of the original features. The room was large and well appointed, extremely comfortable (everything from John Lewis it seems) and quiet. Joy was the perfect host, welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. The b&b is a five minute walk along the harbour to the road which leads to distilleries including Ardbeg (be sure to drop in for a tour with the lovely Emma) and Laphroaig. Bus stop to the airport and north of the island is just around the corner too. Joy's breakfast was hearty and tasty, and she spent time chatting and having a laugh with guests. It seems she does this single handedly and she should be commended for such a fantastic establishment. Can't wait to return,

Just spent one night in Askernish B&B with my family. Spacious rooms, directly at the ferry arrival (so you do not need to stand up much earlier than ferry departure ;-)) Had the two rooms without breakfast as we had to leave with the ferry at 7 am. Therefore got a price reduction which was fair.

Room Tip: Nice B&B close to Ferry

Had an amazing two night stay, room was really comfortable with everything you would need, everything is newly decorated. Breakfast was enormous and delicious, looked after by Joy the owner who does everything herself so a real personal touch. Joy was also generous with her advice on where to go and service was great! We will be back.

My wife and I stayed at Askernish last week for 5 nights.for our first visit to Islay.

Joy made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived, She has a very friendly and relaxed approach and is a source of great information about the island and places to visit.

There is a good choice for breakfast, cereals, juice, haddock, kippers as well as all the full Scottish breakfast components. I definitely recommend the Stornoway black pudding.

Rooms are clean and comfortable and if you haven't booked an en suite room, don't worry, the shared bathroom is modern, spacious and well equipped.

Port Ellen is a good base to visit the island. It's one of the 2 possible ferry destinations and it's close to Laphroaig, Lagavullin and Ardbeg distilleries. There are a number of local hotels and cafes nearby for lunch and dinner.

I absolutely recommend whisky enthusiasts to take the Warehouse demonstration tour at Lagavullin and the Distiller's Wares tour at Laphroig, but I'll review them elsewhere.

Room Tip: Our breakfasts were always freshly cooked to order so leave enough time to enjoy them..
