We stayed recently for 2 nights with our grandaughter age 5 in room 9.Reception staff were friendly ,welcoming and informative and even offered help with our luggage. Our room was on the 2nd floor with a view over old buildings to the sea beyond. It was spacious, well appointed ,with a sofa, huge bed, desk, wardrobe and dresser and the antique furniture was complimented by modern fittings and fixtures of exceptional quality. The bathroom was huge with deep bath and shower over and was stocked with toiletries and handmade soaps and bathbombs made by the local schoolchildren. There were oodles of thick fluffy white towels too!Hospitality tray even had a cafetiere and ground coffee which was much appreciated ,beautiful homemade shortbread and the obligatory minature of Ardbeg 10 year old, which i admit to quaffing as a nightcap. The bed was ultra comfy as were the pillows and we all slept soundly.Food in the bar was of exceptional quality with huge portions and represented fantastic value for money. All staff we met were very friendly and professional and were eager to please.Breakfast was excellent using quality ingredients and cooked to order. The continental breakfast was also excellent with a varied choice of mini croissants and pastries, chorizo, roast beef,ham,4 cheeses, cereals, yoghurt and a selection of freshly cut fruits. It certainly set us up for the day!All the public areas were spotlessly clean and fittings and fixtures were of fantastic quality. There were various antiques and interesting paintings throughout, which were, well placed to add to the hotels overall ambience. The hotel is well situated for touring Islay, and only a hop ,skip and a stagger to 3 distilleries and the Port Ellen ferry port.Round the corner there is a well stocked shop and you are only seconds from a lovely beach. If you are planning on going to Islay then this is the place to stay! For those travelling with children there was a hamper full of toys to keep them amused and for readers a great selection of books strategically placed for your perusal. For malt whisky lovers there is a vast array on sale in the bar.Overall it is one of my most pleasant hotel experiences ,my only gripe being that there were dog hairs in Room 9 and perhaps this needs to be addressed and dogs only allocated in certain rooms with a dog basket/rug.Thank you everyone at the Islay Hotel, you are a credit to island hospitality.God willing ,we will return.Wishing you every success.....you deserve it!
