“Though relatively new, went down like a well aged malt!”
Reviewed 14 March 2014

We stayed recently for 2 nights with our grandaughter age 5 in room 9.Reception staff were friendly ,welcoming and informative and even offered help with our luggage. Our room was on the 2nd floor with a view over old buildings to the sea beyond. It was spacious, well appointed ,with a sofa, huge bed, desk, wardrobe and dresser and the antique furniture was complimented by modern fittings and fixtures of exceptional quality. The bathroom was huge with deep bath and shower over and was stocked with toiletries and handmade soaps and bathbombs made by the local schoolchildren. There were oodles of thick fluffy white towels too!Hospitality tray even had a cafetiere and ground coffee which was much appreciated ,beautiful homemade shortbread and the obligatory minature of Ardbeg 10 year old, which i admit to quaffing as a nightcap. The bed was ultra comfy as were the pillows and we all slept soundly.Food in the bar was of exceptional quality with huge portions and represented fantastic value for money. All staff we met were very friendly and professional and were eager to please.Breakfast was excellent using quality ingredients and cooked to order. The continental breakfast was also excellent with a varied choice of mini croissants and pastries, chorizo, roast beef,ham,4 cheeses, cereals, yoghurt and a selection of freshly cut fruits. It certainly set us up for the day!All the public areas were spotlessly clean and fittings and fixtures were of fantastic quality. There were various antiques and interesting paintings throughout, which were, well placed to add to the hotels overall ambience. The hotel is well situated for touring Islay, and only a hop ,skip and a stagger to 3 distilleries and the Port Ellen ferry port.Round the corner there is a well stocked shop and you are only seconds from a lovely beach. If you are planning on going to Islay then this is the place to stay! For those travelling with children there was a hamper full of toys to keep them amused and for readers a great selection of books strategically placed for your perusal. For malt whisky lovers there is a vast array on sale in the bar.Overall it is one of my most pleasant hotel experiences ,my only gripe being that there were dog hairs in Room 9 and perhaps this needs to be addressed and dogs only allocated in certain rooms with a dog basket/rug.Thank you everyone at the Islay Hotel, you are a credit to island hospitality.God willing ,we will return.Wishing you every success.....you deserve it!

Room Tip: Judging by room 9,I would think all rooms would be of similar quality depending on your budget and p...

We come to Islay every year and stay in a cottage in another part of the island. This year we also had one night at the Islay hotel which was our wedding night as we had just got married at Kildalton. The reception staff were all very welcoming. The room was fantastic, spacious, great views and a jacuzzi bath. We ate in the restaurant and the staff were really friendly but very efficient and we were treated to prossecco on the house. The food was also amazing. Cannot fault anything. Only disappointment was my sister had only booked us for one night!

We had a fabulous couple of days on the island made all the more special by the stay at The Islay Hotel. The staff are so helpful and friendly and the hotel was more than we had hoped for. It has been modernised yet still keeps a traditional charm. The food was excellent and there was entertainment in the bar in the evenings in the form of local folk singers which added to the experience. The hotel is 100 yards from the ferry terminal yet you don't see it from the rooms. We had a double aspect room so sea views from both sides! Definitely a place to revisit!

We had a nice relaxing break. The Islay hotel was refurbished October 2011. The room we stayed in was modern and comfortable the only drawback was limited storage but this was not a problem as we were staying for three nights. The food in the restaurant was reasonably priced and was of a good quality with daily specials available. The staff were friendly and helpful.
We caught the ferry to port Askaig which was a really interesting journey as we travelled closely between isle of Jura and the isle of Islay. We then drove through the island to Port Ellen and our hotel. We returned from Port Ellen. The ferry being a two minute drive from the hotel enabled us to have a leisurely breakfast before catching the morning ferry back to the mainland. This time we saw the coast of Northern Ireland. Both journeys were apoxamately two hours.

Loved every minute here. Had a great room (11) looking over sea and street. Superb food, sparkling rooms and friendly service. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough if you're going to Islay. The breakfast was super and quick - just what was needed and he evening meals really too quality. We opted for the whisky course also which gives you a dram with each course - a nice addition.

Just back from an amazing 2 night 'Living Social' stay with a free upgrade to room 9, which is a Platinum room. It was stunning and included beautiful fluffy robes! Whisky in the room, Prosecco with dinner and afternoon tea.
The room had a beautiful bathroom with a lovely bath, the furniture in the room was gorgeous and we had a lovely view over an old building and then the sea behind.
Our collie Skye was allowed in the room which was a massive plus for us.
The hotel is situated right at the harbour and Port Ellen has plenty to offer nearby. Highly reccomend a drive towards Ardbeg. Beautiful bays and castle en route. But the whole island is very accessible.
The food is some of the best we have ever had!! 3 courses both nights were perfect! The Pork was A-MAZ-ING! Steak the 2nd night was cooked perfectly!! Cant wait to go back for more. All staff where lovely and especially our waiter both nights, Tristan, was very knowledgeable and friendly and made us feel very comfortable and welcome. He's a credit to the hotel.
Can't recommend it enough, and will definitely be back.

Nice modern hotel in great location. Staff were all lovely, great breakfasts and good food in the bar (restaurant food sounded nice but quite pricey). Nice room though not much of a view, nice miniature of whisky & chocolates in the room. Only negative would be the low pitched droning noise that started around 06:30 - possibly to do with the kitchen or the heating. Only a minor point though and didn't affect a great little break.
