The ladies at reception were extremely friendly and helpfull but that was the only good point of the hotel. It is old and not maintained, shoddy carpets, outdated rooms and bathrooms. Furniture has seen better days and place smells musty. It is supposed to have 3 stars from Visit Scotland but it beggars belief how they got that rating. The manager was rude and disinterested when we checked out. It is not cheap either at £130 per night. I recommend you go a little further up the Island and stay at the Port Charlotte Hotel which is sheer luxury with lovely staff, good food and excellent facilities

Everything in the bad reviews is true but you really need to go there to see and smell how bad!
I only want to add a few things. When we came back we noticed that after only one night all our belonging smelt of the dampness. We did not even want to walk on the carpet, the rooms had holes in walls and were the worst we have ever seen.
The other thing is they are not connected to the public water supply so you cannot drink the water which is the colour of strong tea. It is, maybe, ok but we did not even have a shower there as if the grotty shower was not enough the water finished it!
Avoid at all costs!

Oh my gosh, our stay at the Machrie could not have been worse. We have been traveling for nearly four years now and this was by far the worst!

From the moment we arrived we had abrupt and dis-interested service from the reception, bar and restaurant. The waitress asked to take our order from the bar, but we asked to go to our table if it was ready first and then look at the menu. She looked at us like we were crazy, walked us to our table and watched us carry our own wine and menus without helping at all. The food at the restaurant was not too bad, but very over priced. We paid £60 for three people who only ate mains.

After dinner is when the side of Faulty Towers really begun... we had two double rooms, and as soon as we sat on the beds for the night, they BOTH collapsed to the floor! The slats were obviously broken under neath and this must have happened before as for it to happen to both of our rooms independently is just too much of a coincidence.

The shower then completely broke from the wall. You could see this had also happened before as there was this plaster behind where they had try to fix it, but I reckon I could have done a better job. The door on the shower would not even close and at this stage I just gave up.

Tried to dry my hair before going down stairs to find the hair dryer on fire! No joke. It was smoking and had a softest blow in the world. Don't think this has worked since the 80's. Seriously!

After all this, I went downstairs and explained all of this to the receptionist. To be honest, she was nice about it and obviously knew that there are a lot of issues with the place and decided to give us a discount, however unfortunately our stay meant that we had no shower, bad sleeps and terrible food. For £65 per night, per person, this is a joke!

The golf course here is amazing and well worth coming to if you enjoy golf, but do not stay for lunch or a night. You will only be disappointed!

Stayed this weekend in the lodges - dated, damp-smelling and wholly inhospittable.
Upon preparing to check out at 10.30AM on Sunday morning, the cleaners came round in a mini van and shouted " its after 10 o'clock - you're out!!"

Have stayed in the Bowmore distillery cottages before and they are a much better bet.

We are just back from a two nigt stay at the Machrie with two children and three grandparents. We had a great time. The food was lovely and plenty of it, the staff could not have been nicer and, of course, the golf course is amazing. Everyone had a great time - from the under 10's to the over 60's.

On the down side the self catering cottages are a bit shabby but we found them clean and to be honest with two kids and a stack of golf gear we weren't wanting the Ritz. The rest of our party stayed in the hotel and their rooms were lovely. The weather was almost warm when we were there and we played some really great golf. A golf buggy helped us around but made for some fairly hairy driving at some points.

A lot of folk seem to return time and again, so I for one am glad if there are people who don't want to go back - it will keep it quiet for the rest of us. Great memories.

Lacking in warmth and character, a mix or some great staff and those lacking customer skills. Over priced wine and food, and a lack of service by bar staff in the evenings. Saving graces, hardworking waitress, food was reasonable and the mini bus driver was hospitable, others take note!! Not a place I would bother with again, cheap deals or not. Hotel is sadly neglected and just is not good enough now, living on tradition.

We recently had dinner at the hotel and from the minute we sat down, we felt the night was not going to go well. The staff are sour-faced, unhelpful, incompetant and not once were we asked if we were enjoying the food or if they could get anything else etc. Food is served in a dated room overlooking a car park courtyard and unimaginatively served on school dinner style plates. My asparagus consisted of 5 spears, no garnish, for 5 pounds! My husband had tiny overcooked scallops with some limp iceberg lettuce. 6.95 I think. For mains, 2 burnt ruskoline covered salmon fishcakes with virtually no salmon, and overcooked beef and black pudding with bisto gravy, again no garnish other than a sprinkling of dried herbs which seemed to be scattered over every dish in the room. The beef, 17.50 and the fishcakes 13.50............completely overpriced! Oh...forgot...served with a platter of undercooked school type veggies between both of us. Needless to say, we skipped pudding. The management in this place is clearly in need of a shake up. A far better option for friendly, smiling service, value for money delicious meal is the Bridgend Hotel, Bridgend.
