“a very bad prize!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2009

I won a trip to the Whisky Coast via Visitscotland.com. Part of the "winning prize" was 2 nights at the Machrie Hotel. What a disaster. We had spent the first two nights on the Isle of Arran at the Auchrannie Hotel -Brilliant beautiful hotel with great food and wonderful staff. The next two nights of the prize were at the Harbour Inn on Islay. Again another wonderful hotel with great food and excellent accommodation. The porch area at the Machrie was dirty and both hanging baskets outside the front door were well and truly dead. A good start! The receptionist just gave us the key and told us our room was upstairs on the right-no help with luggage or in giving us any details of the hotel. We went into the room-oh dear- how dated. Like walking back into the 1970's. Heavy pine furniture which has stain marks and damp patches on them. Carpets were stained, peeling wallpaper, a nasty damp, musty smell and damp patches on the ceiling. The best was yet to come when we went into the bathroom, We read a notice on the bathroom wall that the water was not drinkable and when we looked down the loo the water was brown! We flushed the loo and again the water was brown. We tested the tap and the water and large black bits coming out -the shower water was the same. Wallpaper was peeling and there was black mould around the shower area. We looked around downstairs-the lounge area had cobwebs hanging off the ceiling and generally looked like very outdated. We called the agents of VisitScotland.com who told us there was nothing they could do as this was part of the prize-some end to the break!! We called other hotels on the island but they were fully booked. We then called the ferry company who were excellent in bringing our ferry departure forward by a day to the next morning. We had no option but to stay the night.-needless to say we did not eat here and left very early next morning. I would most certainly NOT recommend this hotel to anyone. It has a three star award form the tourist board-NOT deserved at all. It has a very bad reflection on VisitScotland. booking us into this hotel.

To be honest, my husband and i didn't stay here (thanks to the tips from tripadvisor) but we did come here for dinner one night. The bar service is rather aprupt, and they do look fairly disinterested...but i must say it has one of the most wonderful selections of single malts - some rare - in existence. The dinner (we ordered at the bar too, seems a habit here) was very average. the service was decent, but the food quite unremarkable and a tad overpriced.
the property is a lovely one, in the line of very old world style British clubs, and i do wish they would fix things fast!

Staff were really helpful and friendly on reception and in the Golf Shop. I was a bit taken aback at the price given it was off season, wet and deserted, but I'm glad I spent the £55 for a round of golf. The course is maginficent with stunning views and constant variety. Definitely one of the main highlights on a trip to Islay.

The ladies at reception were extremely friendly and helpfull but that was the only good point of the hotel. It is old and not maintained, shoddy carpets, outdated rooms and bathrooms. Furniture has seen better days and place smells musty. It is supposed to have 3 stars from Visit Scotland but it beggars belief how they got that rating. The manager was rude and disinterested when we checked out. It is not cheap either at £130 per night. I recommend you go a little further up the Island and stay at the Port Charlotte Hotel which is sheer luxury with lovely staff, good food and excellent facilities

Everything in the bad reviews is true but you really need to go there to see and smell how bad!
I only want to add a few things. When we came back we noticed that after only one night all our belonging smelt of the dampness. We did not even want to walk on the carpet, the rooms had holes in walls and were the worst we have ever seen.
The other thing is they are not connected to the public water supply so you cannot drink the water which is the colour of strong tea. It is, maybe, ok but we did not even have a shower there as if the grotty shower was not enough the water finished it!
Avoid at all costs!

Oh my gosh, our stay at the Machrie could not have been worse. We have been traveling for nearly four years now and this was by far the worst!

From the moment we arrived we had abrupt and dis-interested service from the reception, bar and restaurant. The waitress asked to take our order from the bar, but we asked to go to our table if it was ready first and then look at the menu. She looked at us like we were crazy, walked us to our table and watched us carry our own wine and menus without helping at all. The food at the restaurant was not too bad, but very over priced. We paid £60 for three people who only ate mains.

After dinner is when the side of Faulty Towers really begun... we had two double rooms, and as soon as we sat on the beds for the night, they BOTH collapsed to the floor! The slats were obviously broken under neath and this must have happened before as for it to happen to both of our rooms independently is just too much of a coincidence.

The shower then completely broke from the wall. You could see this had also happened before as there was this plaster behind where they had try to fix it, but I reckon I could have done a better job. The door on the shower would not even close and at this stage I just gave up.

Tried to dry my hair before going down stairs to find the hair dryer on fire! No joke. It was smoking and had a softest blow in the world. Don't think this has worked since the 80's. Seriously!

After all this, I went downstairs and explained all of this to the receptionist. To be honest, she was nice about it and obviously knew that there are a lot of issues with the place and decided to give us a discount, however unfortunately our stay meant that we had no shower, bad sleeps and terrible food. For £65 per night, per person, this is a joke!

The golf course here is amazing and well worth coming to if you enjoy golf, but do not stay for lunch or a night. You will only be disappointed!

Stayed this weekend in the lodges - dated, damp-smelling and wholly inhospittable.
Upon preparing to check out at 10.30AM on Sunday morning, the cleaners came round in a mini van and shouted " its after 10 o'clock - you're out!!"

Have stayed in the Bowmore distillery cottages before and they are a much better bet.
