We booked here for a week on Islay and found that we had really struck it lucky. Rachel was the hostess from heaven. She made us very welcome on arrival and throughout the rest of our stay. The room was spotless and very comfortable. As for breakfast! What can we say except that Rachel produced the best breakfast we have ever had on holiday. On top of that Rachel always presented us with scones to keep us going until lunch. However, we found there was really no need for lunch after the scones with homemade jam. We even got a bagful to bring home with us for the freezer. Every morning she suggested a restaurant for dinner and even made the bookings for us. Thank you again, Rachel. Definitely worth a return visit.

Room Tip: west facing room for fantastic sunsets

This B&B was out of this world. Rachel does a phenomenal job running this place and has the most wonderful and lovely personality imaginable. The room we stayed in was gorgeous and clean with a teriffically comfortable king size bed. Rachel had wonderful recommendations about where to visit and where to eat, which we were so glad we followed! After a fun-filled day of whisky tasting we returned to the B&B and were offered afternoon tea - so nice! Breakfast in the morning was exceptional. I've never been offered a cheese platter for breakfast before! It was amazing :) Such a treat and can't wait to return.

Rachel is an absolute star...Glenmachrie is not her first GH and its obvious....she runs the place with smooth efficiency. Reputed to have the best breakfast on the island, it was more than a match for us, but it’s a real treat in the morning (though it kept us going for the rest of the day!) The tea, scones & home made raspberry jam when we arrived late afternoon also hit the spot. The rooms are comfy and adequate but the pleasure is in Rachel as a host and the atmosphere she has created.... she welcomes you into her home with open arms....No one could be disappointed with a visit to Glenmachrie....

We stayed here one night and would return again. Great host in Rachel the owner, made us feel right at home and eager to help. The full Scottish prepared on site was robust and delicious, and wil last you all day !!

There are rooms in the main house which are well appointed. We stayed in a separate modular cabin with bedrooms, kitchen and bath called Riverside lodge. The bedrooms are compact and the beds themselves offer limited comfort. Wider beds with better matresses would enhance guest comfort. Beds are OK for small children though. All rooms can be viewed on their website.

Room Tip: Review photos on website and ask questions of owner via email.

Rachel is a wonderful host, who gave me a warm greeting along with a pot of tea. She also helped me book a distillery tour, and had great ideas about dinners and entertainment while in Islay, as well as directions and suggestions for some of the little extras around the island that aren't in any guidebooks. Come hungry to breakfast, as the portions are mammoth, and all delicious. My room was clean, and comfortable, no complaints here. I'm sure I'll be back!
