Our second visit to Galson Farm, love the welcome by David & Hazel.
Love the home cooked food, with home grown vegetables and
sometimes their own meat. All meals are excellent.
We are both self employed and live quite a hectic life, to come to
Galson and walk down the lane to the beach is bliss, the peace and
quiet meet our requirements. Rooms clean, food excellent, weather take it as it comes. Bru the Clydesdale Shire Horse is a star, as is the
donkey. Even the sheep and cows have names.

This is a great place to stay in Lewis and we would highly recommend a stopover here.
We stayed for 3 nights - good clean, specious room, wide range of choice for breakfast and the dinner we had could have been served in many a top restaurant in the UK.
A good base for travel with lots of information available in the house.

A warm and friendly welcome with good "craic" from both Hazel and David made our trip to the islands even more enjoyable than we could have hoped.

Having read the website and other reviews, I was expecting something better. Unlike other guests, I found the welcome to be cold and business-like, and was disappointed in my room (although I now realise that the website doesn't promise sea views from the bedrooms) The evening meal was 3 courses, not the promised 4, and I believe that neither the soup nor the dessert were home cooked. I was not offered wine or whisky - perhaps as a single female the hosts thought this would be inappropriate! All in all rather poor - I paid a good deal less for better quality elsewhere in Lewis.

two of our bedrooms face directly to sea and therefore take the brunt of gales direct from the sea,.We have concerns that sea facing windows in these rooms might lead to a poor nights sleep. However quotations have been sought,as will views of guests this summer, and a decision on installation will be taken this autumn. The description of meals has been amended to ensure clarity. The meals were home cooked with two deserts made on morning of arrival as the Visit Scotland Grader will attest, as she tried both on the following day on the annual inspection. In response to the new legislation and the Drink aware programme operating in scotland,we take a low key reactive response to achohol sold on our premises. We have a clearly visible malt whisky selection,a drinks menu in the lounges, wine list on the dining table, and premises licence clearly displayed. We in no way wish to pressure our guests into the purchase of alchohol.

We arrived at the B&B in a drizzle and heavy winds. David checked us in quickly and offered us tea - very welcoming to take the chill off. We had booked one double and one twin room. Both rooms were very clean, but the double was a little bit small. No problem, there are two different lounges to relax in - one with the television and one without. Breakfasts are ordered the night before and were tasty and substantial.

We had decided to take one of our evening meals at the Guest House - and were glad we did. First of all, there isn't much else around this area. There is a good hotel/restaurant a few miles from Galson Farms, but not much else that we could find without going to Stornoway - which was 20 minutes or so travel time. The meal of baked fish with a citrus sauce, chips and vegetables, with a starter of tomato soup and a choice of desserts, was very good.

If you want to get out to what real life in the Hebrides may look like come to Galson Farm. We stayed for dinner, bed and breakfast just two nights but left quite impressed. While Hazel takes care of the home-cooked food, David plays the entertainer to the guests. Lots of background knowledge about the animals he is tending and the life in the Isles in general is to be had for free and most interesting. While the rooms are clean and cosy, you can also enjoy the two large resident's lounges stuffed with antiques and curiosities. There is a most homely feel to the conservatory, which is probably very useful year-round in the inclement weather. A good wine-list and single malts leave nothing to wish for. On one evening the latest Belted Galloway calf was born and we witnessed our host serving dinner and helping the new-born into life at the same time. Next morning David as the post office manager gives advice on how to fill in the forms. Life can be very different in places like these and I am sure you would feel far better here than in Stornoway for an authentic experience of Island life.

I would strongly recommend not staying at this place. The B&B double room we stayed in was the most claustrophobic, cramped room I have ever stayed in at a B&B / Guest House. The service was abrupt and not particularly friendly. The choice of breakfast was extremely limited despite the marketing spiel about providing a wide range of fresh breakfast choices. We stayed at numerous other B & B's during our time in the Western Isles and all offered better cereal, cooked breakfast and continental style (meat, bread, yoghurt) choices. They ignored our request for some yoghurt. This place even "pretended" to forget that we had pre-paid a deposit and tried to double charge us. Just as well I had made detailed notes of what we had paid them. The location is the pits although they claim to be by the Ocean with great views - they are in fact miles from the sea and surrounded by not very scenic farm detritus. You can do much better in the Hebrides.

We stayed in this B and B for 3 nights and had a very comfortable double room with large ensuite shower overlooking the beach.
This was our first visit to the Western Isles but Galson Farm was well placed for visiting most places and certainly gave a more authentic feel of the Island life than staying in Stornaway. There is a lovely comfortable lounge to relax in and we had a very satisfactory evening meal supplied by the B and B on the first evening. It was very pleasant to be able to walk down to the beach from the property and watch the sunset but please remember that in June sunset is probably not till 11pm. We would recommend a stay here and would return if we head to the
Western Isles again.
