“Friendly and Welcoming!!”
Reviewed 18 June 2013

We were booked into the Heb Hostel and were pleasantly surprised. I have stayed in a hostel before and it was an experience I never wanted to repeat so I was dubious of how it would be.

When we had arrived Christine was friendly and very helpful. the Hostel is just 5 minutes walk from the ferry and is in the town so there are shops and bars nearby.

The rooms are cleaned everyday and they could not have done anymore to make our stay better. Stornoway is a beautiful place and Heb Hostel has everything you want at a low cost. It would be great if you are travelling yourself too as you could meet others there.

Only downside is the bars do shut early, 930-1030pm.

I would definitely recommend Heb to anyone :)

Room Tip: Go into the town and purchase Stornoway black pudding yum!!!

This place has only one fault. Not enough bathrooms for the amount of visitors.... It was a struggle to get a loo stop in let alone a shower. If you can get over this, this place is FANTASTIC. The house is perfectly situated in Stornaway and Christine is simply a joy of a person, she is incredibly welcoming and having been a backpacker herself, she knows what people need/want from a hostel. The communal areas are fantastic and feel like a lovely home. The beds/rooms were perfect, lots of space and the beds were v comfortable with little sidelights for reading. £16 per night made it the cheapest hostel of my trip and one of the best too. YHA could learn something from her! Please note they cannot accept card payments here. The rooms don't need locks, Stornaway has the lowest crime rate in the UK!

We booked the Heb Hostel on the day as we were on a bit of a road trip around the Highlands and Islands. We found them in a Lonely Planet guide and phoned straight away. Host Christine was very helpful and friendly, showing us around while holding her adorable little boy.

We stayed in a mixed dorm (we being me and my boyfriend) and as there was only one other person staying in it we had a great peaceful night. Beds were very comfy although pillows were a little flat.

The hostel feels like a home, with carpets and wallpaper, and a chatty, relaxed vibe. People wer cooking and talking in the kitchen in the evening and in the morning. WiFi connection was good and living room very comfy. We really appreciated the binder of local restaurants with menus and reviews from guests too.

Price-wise it was reasonable, with £43 for two people. I agree with previous reviewers that it would have been nice to have locks on the doors of dorms, but there were lockers under all the beds and you could rent a padlock so I think if you were really concerned about security you'd be fine.

Location was great, very close to the water and lots of restaurants and shops, and the building was lovely. Overall, very good!

We normally stay in hotels when we're away but were travelling with a big group of friends for the Storoway half marathon so opted for the Hostel as a cheap option. The whole group were pleasantly surprised and we'll definately be back!
Very warm welcome from Christine, loads of local information in the living room, folders with information on local restaurants/outings etc. There's a pay as you go computer in the living room or if you have your own laptop/smart phone then there's free wifi.
We stayed in the mixed dorm, it was large and immaculate. There were extra pillows if you needed them and the beds were comfy. There was a huge bathroom with a big bath, double sink, toilet and shower. I can't understand the other posts about a lack of bathrooms/showers?? There are plenty!! The hostel was full while we were there and there was never a wait for either the showers or toilets.
The kitchen area has a table and chairs to sit at, great cooking facilities and there's bread and jams, a selection of cereal and plenty tea and coffee. There's a lovely garden with picnic tables at the back of the hostel, great for sitting outside!
Very central location right opposite the ferry terminal and a 2 minute walk from the high street.
Would highly recommend this hostel as an alternative to the pricey guest houses on Stornoway!

The hostel is quite nice overall. Christine, the owner, is friendly and helpful. The female dorm is a good size for the number of beds. There is free toast, cereal, etc for breakfast and free wifi (very fast!) My main complaint is that there is no lock on the dorm door. There are lockers in the room but it feels unsafe not to be able to lock the door. The kitchen is a bit small, and there are not quite enough bathrooms for the number of people. I still really enjoyed my stay and if these small things don't bother you it is definitely a good choice.

This hostel is cheap, warm and clean, £16 a bed in a dorm. The owner is friendly and helpful. It's right in the centre of Stornoway, ideal for the ferry and the buses. Free basic self service breakfast, good kitchen for self-catering, and near good butchers, bakers, fishmongers and Co-op store. Loads of Harris Tweed on sale in the town. Free wifi in the hostel, good atmosphere. Only criticism is they could do with a few more toilets and showers.

Hostel is great; centre of town; warm, comfortable, free wifi and breakfast, and the owner is great with guests. About 100 yards to free carpark and not much further to a supermarket [closed on Sundays]. Good value and not a problem to share with others. The female room upstairs has a great bathroom too. Other hostellers are very friendly as a bonus
