“A pleasant change”
Reviewed 16 March 2013

A bit late in posting this one. I stayed in September 2012 and it was so nice to stay in a privately owned hotel that was not a chain / multinational.

The hotel is right in the middle of Stornoway so a great location.

Very pleasant staff and breakfast was table service for the hot food, a nice touch.

Some reviewers mention the hotel being a bit tired, there was some renovation work going on when I was there. My room had nice decor and colour scheme with a modern bathroom.

Only negative comment I could make is about poor water pressure in the shower. I'll be back on Lewis soon I hope, and will stay in the County Hotel again.

My wife and I stayed in this hotel on 4th ,5th, and 6th August 2012,whilsr attending a reunion of
'The Highlands and Islands; Society of London in the hotel. The food was excellent and the staff were very helpful ,and friendly - especially the lady who looked after our room, and the lady who served breakfast. The room was comfortable, although old-fashioned. Refurbishment was taking place ,of all rooms, though our room had not been done at the time we stayed.Would definitely
stay there again

Room Tip: There are no Lifts which is ok for youngsters but if old or infirm then look for lower floor

The hotel is located right in the centre of town a very short walk from the Ferry terminal, shops and the An Lanntair arts centre. I've eaten here before and can't fault the food on offer, have really enjoyed every meal here. The rooms on the other hand need much work (which to be fair they are in the middle of). I had booked an upgraded room, but unfortunately the room I received had not yet been renovated. The walls were marked, the shower was not very good, bed uncomfortable.

I'll probably go back when renovations are complete but would insist on a newly decorated room.

Room Tip: Ask for a upgraded room.

I stayed for two nights at this hotel on a business trip recently and struggle to find many positive things to say about it. The room could at best be described as 'in need of improvement' or 'tired' in that the walls needed re-painting as it looked like previous guests had thrown tea bags at the bin and missed! The wifi was down for 3 days which I know isn't a big issue but when you are business it is a real pain. The staff really didn't know what to do to get it fixed. Most staff were very helpful indeed. Breakfast is interesting with a very limited range of packet cereals, a jug of juice and the usual cooked options. Toast never arrived on day one and tea appeared to take ages on day two. Its not bad its just not great.

Room Tip: perhaps the refurbished rooms will be better once completed

Stayed one night on business, I had heard that there were some nice rooms and some not so nice. There are renovations taking place at the moment so cannot comment on pre renovated rooms. I was in room 3, and my only complaint was the continuous cooking smells from the kitchen, I assume it was directly below (the breakfast room certainly was anyway) I didn't have my evening meal in the hotel (I ate at the Bangla Spice, see separate review ) however, the breakfast was good. Reasonable rate at £70 pppn including breakfast.

Can't forget to praise the combines of the bed, lovely.Ideally located also.

Room Tip: Insist on a post refurbished room

Food is excellent. Had a few items of the menu and all are really good quality and value. Lovely coffee too. Highly recommended. when you visit Stornoway have break here. My own favorite is the Keema Wrap for lunch.
