We spent two days in Tobermory on a whisky tour with friends. A nice old still in a lovely small village. The tour was really interesting, but to view a movie, you can visit youtube. Some more history information would be better. Basic information about whisky, a very young girl guided us with a charming smile, but the whisky was by far better than the tour. We would prefer a guide with knowledge about the Tobermory still and history and a little more time for the guests.

We're all used to tour guides, but we had the privilege of being shown around on our visit by one of the whisky makers (the 'Still' man). Yes, the opening video was a bit cheesy, but we were made to feel welcome; there was open discussion; we were allowed to take our time; and the processes were explained with genuine interest and passion... and plenty of Scottish humour. The dram(s) at the end were very welcome and the difference between the 'Tobermory' and the 'Ledaig' are obvious. Unfortunately, great as they are, the 15 year old is even greater (but so is its price!). Please note that booking in advance is advised.

Distillery tours at Tobermory are conducted in small groups and booking is recommended as we just managed to get two of the last places that day. The tour is the same for everyone but there are two tasting options to choose from. Both include a dram of Tobermory 10 year old but for an extra £2 you can sample their other peatier favourite, Ledaig. We opted to try both!

The tour starts with a brief video introduction which is very cheesy and doesn't really add much to the experience. The tour guide then escorts you through the different parts of the distillery explaining the history and process along the way. What is particularly interesting is seeing the distillers at work (who were happy to answer all our questions) and the process happening for real. You then finish up in the tasting room which did feel a little rushed as we were the last tour of the day and the shop was about to close - would it be possible to maybe close 15 minutes later?

This tour is pretty good, the location stunning but the whisky even better. Worth a visit if you've not visited a distillery before but if you have, you probably won't learn anything new.

I enjoyed the tour, however, things could be improved significantly.
1 : The video is terrible, so bad it affected my ability to take the distillery seriously.
2 : the tour guide, although good, showed little enthusiasm it felt a bit robotic and 'sales pitch-like'
3 : the price should be £8 for both drams ; no option to try one.
4 : the tasting felt rushed, my lips were burning from the speed I felt j had to consume.
5 : give us a taste of the sherry barrel edition please! Do I have to go to master of malt to get a 3cl sample? Pay £70 for a whisky I've not tried? I don't think so.

6 : better sample glasses ; crack open a box of Glencairns - you have them, I saw them.

Grumbles aside it is enjoyable, I'm not a Smokehead so I prefered the Tobermory to Ledaig but both are fine drams with enough nose, body and finish to justify the price : recommended
