“Nice and friendly”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

Sarah was really helpful and friendly. The room was nice and warm. The kitchen very clean. And I loved that you could rent rain boots, that was very essential when visiting the isle of skye. Would definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: We stayed in a double room with view on to the bridge and water. It was small, but cozy.

I stayed here for just one night at Easter, just wished I could have stayed longer. The staff, Ruthie and Maddie were adorable... Ruthie treated us all to a blast of the past in the form of "Power Ballads". The facilities were everything one would expect. Showers, toilets, etc. The kitchen was bright and roomy, and the living room - with a real fire place - was cosy and had a fantastic view across to the mainland. I slept in the Yellow Welly caravan, which being seperated from the main hostel meant it was much quieter, but it did mean an adventure in the dark if you needed the bathroom!! The hostel is right next to the main bus stop in the village, with connections to places such as Glasgow, Fort William and Inverness. I definately plan to go back next summer!

Room Tip: Caravans for value

I thought the idea of the caravans sounds really interesting and liked the idea of naming the beds and the themes but when I actually got there I was a bit disappointed. The 'Yellow Welly' caravan didn't really have much of a theme going to it, the names were just laminated stickers on the bunk beds and I had a sky light right above my head!
On the other hand, it's cheap! The staff are really friendly and helpful, the free coffee and milk is a great idea and the vibe was good.

Room Tip: Don't choose the caravans

The hostel was on average good, with a good breakfast and a nice and friendly environment. However if you decide to sleep in the 10 bed caravan on the backyard, make sure that you're not claustrophobic and be aware that you might wake up with some bumps on your head. In fact the upper bed of the bunk beds has 1 foot of surviving space from the ceiling. Apart from this, the toilet on the outside was always clean and never too busy. Same for the showers inside the building.

Myself, my husband and some friends of our stayed here at the end of our European trip after we stayed at their sister hostel in Edinburgh.

It had a good atmosphere, the staff were very friendly and it was always a nice night with everyone cooking a pizza for dinner together. It was a very friendly experience.

The rooms were good, we loved staying in the main room with the fire (we were there February 2012) playing games we found and drinking whiskey.

The hotel was in older condition, but the facilities were sufficient. We were in a room with two bunk beds and a basin. The bathrooms were okay, however if you like hot showers, be the first to have one in the morning, as they ran out of hot water very quickly. The shower was just a cubicle at the end of the wall.

They had a resident cat patrolling, which was lovely, as we were all beginning to miss our pets back home.

It was well located, opposite the river, and within good driving distances to explore the beautiful isle. I loved their attraction notices around the place as it helped us to explore some amazing things. There weren't many places to eat close by (the kitchen was well utilized) and it took a car trip to find somewhere to eat.

For cheap accommodation, I would consider staying here again.

I have stayed a few times at the skye backpachers... it is a nice hostel with good atmosphere. But the caravans ar not so nice, the beds are too small to sleep if you are more than 1'70m and anytime anyone wakes uo the whole thing moves... a nice hostel that in my opinion would be even better without that caravans.

It was a one of a kind type of hostel experience - one which we could sleep in a caravan! Being from an Asian country, caravans are a very fresh concept to me, and sleeping in one brings the experience to a whole new level.

Found it rather irritating, though. The toilets are located in the main building and the door of the main building is locked after 10 PM. You need a code to get pass through. It isn't a good idea to drink too much water before you sleep lest you need to wake up and look for a toilet to answer nature's call in the middle of the night.

Of course, you could choose to sleep in the hostels in the main building itself and this problem would be eradicated.

Watch out for the midges just outside the caravans, especially at night. The midge bites sting real badly if they happen to feed on you.

The heater systems in our caravans worked perfectly and it kept us warm and cosy throughout the night. Service was excellent and the place was clean in general.

The staff helped us to "redirect" other hostel-visitors mainly to the other caravan mainly because we were more of the family-oriented visitors, so we kinda had the entire caravan to ourselves.

They were really friendly as well. There is a supermarket quite nearby but you'll have to drive a car there. You can then bring your food into the building and cook in the kitchen. There are many other hostel visitors too and the entire ambience was really cosy. An excellent "hideout" after the cold outside. Fridges are provided as well BTW, along with complimentary milk, hot chocolate, coffee etc.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review for us :-) We're glad you enjoyed your stay & understand the caravan dorms are not everyone's first choice. There is actually an outdoor loo in the shed next to the caravans as we understand the frustrations of a midnight trek to the loo, my apologies that we didn't manage to make you aware of this during your stay. Although frustrating, the door code helps us maintain the fun, friendly & safe environment that you enjoyed during your stay and is limited to night time only :-) We totally agree with your complaints about the midges, even enjoying an amazing sunset can be made difficult by the small biters, but the good news is that they aren't all year round & a good midge repellent usually works. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday & hopefully see you back in Skye Backpackers - cooking up a storm - again soon!
