“Fantastic location and great food”
Reviewed 14 August 2013

Motorbike trip with two mates round the north of Scotland so basically cheap and cheer full. Booked this hostel in advance and on arrival was very impressed with its location which offered fantastic views from the front of the hostel. I was impressed with the fact that the hostel had a shop and pub attached. The food served at the pub was excellent and very reasonably priced with an additional 20% off if you are a resident. The room we booked was a 5 bed en-suite dorm which was basic but clean and spacious enough for the bike kit. At £22 a head for a hostel I thought it was a little on the pricey side however the location/pub grub and pub compensated for this. Skye is stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit and if you are doing it on a budget then this hostel is the place to stay.

Room Tip: Live music in pub at the weekends so some rooms will have noise pollution. The five bed ensuite dorm...

Our family stayed here for two nights mainly because I couldn't seem to find lodging anywhere else. All we needed was a place to sleep and because we had our kids with us, they gave us a room to ourself. The room seemed nice enough, but the hostel was so noisy, it was very difficult to sleep at all. The floors are very creaky and the doors are loud and our room was right across from the bathrooms. On top of that, our window faced the front and you could hear everyone that was outside the pub that joins with Saucy Mary's.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that faces the back and isn't across from the bathrooms.

This was the second time i'd stayed at Saucy's so I knew what to expect. The rooms are very basic and a private room with a sea view has only 2 plug sockets. The rooms have their own sinks which makes cleaning your teeth easier but the room has a slightly grubby feel to it. We stayed 2 nights with a lot of travelling in between so only used the room to sleep. the toilets are separate from the showers and both have an unwashed, overused feel to them. Wear flip flops when using the shower as it's not nice and do not put your clothes on the floor as the shower floods. Overall it's an ok place but if I could have afforded a B&B I would have done so.

Room Tip: they all seem to be the same

At the time of my visit during the last week of May 2013, the lodge was also the only shop and pub that was in operation at the area. That naturally meant high prices. It was 6 pounds for washing a load of laundry, and another 6 pounds to dry them. I'm not sure why it's charged separately because what was I supposed to do with a load of wet clothes? You could clearly tell the rooms and facilities were old, although they were adequately clean. There were not enough power outlets in the room, only 2 were available. If you unplug the radiator, you get a third outlet. Views from the room and outside the lodge was great. There were several benches outside that you can sit at to enjoy the views. I went on a small walk around the area and it was very pleasant.

Dinner prices at the pub was acceptable, although the menu description for Oven Roast Vegetable and Lentil Tagine was very misleading. It said "with Morroccan spices, baked sweet potato and creme fraiche", but what I got was a plate where 85% of it was carbohydrates in various forms and only a small pile of vegetables (that also had carbs hidden in them). Photo attached with review.

Having just driven from Fort William in dreadful weather we were recommended the hostel as a good place to eat, and watch a football match which was on Sky. Not knowing the area, we were expecting pub grub, but couldn't have been further from the truth. The meal was excellent; A seafood medley of local Salmon, Mussels and Langoustine, followed by homemade Sticky toffee pudding. Great atmosphere in the bar, lively but not too rowdy. We were made to feel very welcome, and enjoyed the night immensely Will go back again on our next visit.

Our hostel was booked by Highland Experience tour company on their 3 day tour. There was some confusion with allotting the room when we first arrived but it was quickly solved by the lady in charge and she allotted a beautiful room with a sea view to me and another guest of the tour. Very clean and comfortable room with 4 bunk beds, ample room and a wash basin inside. Clean toilets and bathrooms in the common passage. Adequate electrical outlets for charging.
The bar downstairs served amazing fresh sea food besides other local dishes with a very lively atmosphere. Breakfast was rather steeply priced. Overall a very pleasant experience and would certainly go again.

Room Tip: If you are on a budget tour, you can cook your own breakfast in the common kitchen in the hostel.

We stayed here during a trip with Haggis Tours, for the Skye High 3 Day tour. This was the first stopover for the trip and was a little disappointing.

The bed was comfortable enough. The bedding new and really lush. Everything was clean and felt comfortable. There was a pub owned by the same company that served good food and reasonable priced alcohol. The location is great - in one direction you could walk to a ruined Castle and in another direction you can walk across the Skye Bridge.

The staff were extraordinarily helpful and kind; very warm and welcoming. This definitely helped to increase my opinion of our stay at the hostel.

But...

The room for 8 (103/104) only had 4 outlets in the entire room (2 above 1 bed, and 2 above a 2nd bed) which made it difficult to get anything charged unless you had the foresight to take one of the beds with the outlet.

The showers flooded so that anything brought into the shower room with you became soaked by the time you were through with a 5 minute shower.

Room Tip: Find the power outlet before choosing your bed!
