“Two days on Skye”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

The Cuillin Hills Hotel is set in a secluded spot on the outskirts of Portree, but no more than a ten minute walk into the centre, down leafy lanes. The Hotel is set high with spectacular views across Portree harbour, Loch Portree, and the snow capped mountains beyond - when not shrouded in mist! Our room overlooked this view and was well presented and well decorated, except for the radiator, which would benefit from some TLC!. The en suite was modern and well equipped with the usual toiletries. The dining room is spacious, and benefits from the panoramic view, and we enjoyed two superb evening meals, with an excellent menu selection. I can recommend the chocolate ice cream!. Breakfast has a good choice and is very well cooked and presented and the staff are both welcoming and attentive. There is a short circular walk from the hotel along the coast, but beware that it is not well signposted, and not shown on the OS map. Portree has a good selection of shops and banks, but no visit to Skye would be complete without touring and Portree and the Cuillin Hills Hotel are perfectly situated for this.
There is a large car park.

I picked this hotel particularly for the location, the look of room standards on their web site and of course the view. We had a great weekend on the Isle of Skye. However, our room was the Classic Double Room with a view of the back car park. :-( :-( The quality of the room was good, clean and maintained. The bed mattress unfortunately was hard and uncomfortable, very creaky, noisy when you wished to move or turn over and did not give a very good sleep. The usual accoutrements were supplied i.e. a TV but very limited on choice of programmes, tea, coffee and hot chocolate making facilities. The shower curtain smelled of a very stagnant odour which could have been improved by a good wash or in fact a renewal. The bathroom was otherwise clean and presentable with the usual accoutrements. The view from the front of the hotel is beyond any words I can express here, just stunning which brings me on to the dining room view, you could ask for nothing more when eating an excellent dinner served by helpful and attentive staff that made the experience what it is. Again to mention the food, we sat for dinner both nights and had no complaints. Compliments to the chef/chefs who prepared and presented the tastiest of food. Breakfast was hearty meal with all the other accoutrements available if you wished a lighter breakfast. A good well stocked bar was available and quiet and relaxing when you required an after drink and you were never rushed to leave. Overall a pleasant stay but with a few reservations I have to mention. We booked the room through the internet which was pricey. However as I have mentioned we were in the Classic Room, on the Friday my wife overheard a conversation with reception and a potential customer enquiring on the price of rooms, the quote was, “ We have Deluxe Rooms at £150.00 per night”. Well! We paid well over that for a Classic Room which did not go down well with me; this obviously put a sour taste in my mouth. However I did no dwell on it as it would have spoiled our stay and paid my bill in full when we booked out as I did not wish to ruin my wife’s enjoyment of her visit to the Isle of Skye. The only other reservation is that you tend to get conflicting information from some staff on the running of the hotel, i.e. booking a window table for dinner, “We do not do that, first come first served”, but we found that certain guests had reservations, same again for the bar, second night table reserved for certain guests. My point! Treat all guests the same to provide a harmonious stay, these little staff quirks with preferential treatment tend to irk other guests and alienate them from further stays at the hotel. Would I stay again, No! Not at the price I paid for the reasons I have mentioned. They would have to improve immensely. For the standard they are maintaining at the moment they would have to drop the price to encourage me to return. Sad that I have to speak of these matters as the place has a lot to offer, little things tend to irk people more than major irks as you would get them sorted by complaining straight away. On the Sunday morning we were abruptly and rudely awakened by a commotion in the back car park which sounded as if an argument or rift had broken out by persons unknown, we could only surmise that it was staff reporting for the early shift and a couple of them had a loud tiff between themselves, poor show on that one, this caused my wife to say," Lets leave now and get home". This we did and we missed our breakfast as a result, I was not a happy cookie. Overall the island exceeded all expectations. :-) :-)

Room Tip: If you want a soft mattress arrange prior to booking.

Cullin Hills is located next to The Portree Bay and is the perfect home base while staying on the Isle of Skye. There are two sections to Cullin Hills; the main hotel and the annex which is to the left of the main building. Because we had booked late but had gotten a really low rate (it was the off season), we were put into the annex. We didn’t mind considering what we paid. Though, there were no elevators so if you are on the second floor steering luggage up the stairway may be difficult for some.

The room was clean and spacious and the bathroom was beautiful. There were also complimentary hot chocolate and biscuits next to the coffee/tea machine which was greatly appreciated, especially after a long day of site seeing.

My only real complaint about the hotel is that the walls were really thin. You could hear the door leading into the annex opening and closing all night/morning long making sleep difficult at times. Also, there was a family down the hall who let their older child scream about cookies until 1AM and because the walls were so flimsy, you could hear every word and there was no way to drown the sound out. The child was not the hotels fault rather a product of questionable parenting, but it gives you an idea of how thin the walls are. I don’t know if this is a problem in the main hotel or not.

The breakfast was fine, not the best we had on the trip but not the worst. We were lucky enough to get a table near the window giving us a perfect view of the bay while we ate. The best part of breakfast was watching two wild bunnies enjoying the morning on the front lawn.

Even though the walls were not soundproof, I would still stay at Cullin again due to the location, the view, and the very helpful and polite staff. All and all it was a great experience.

We stayed here for the weekend in March, the season is still low and the scenery is stunning when there is still snow on the mountains.

The hotel is located on a hill just outside the town of Portree, walking distance to pretty much everything!

The outside of the hotel has a clean, classic styling with well designed modern additions and ample car parking.

Inside, the styling is a mixture of traditional and modern, blended seamlessly to create a very welcoming feeling as soon as you walk in the door.

Our room was the Cuillin suite, there are two at the front of the hotel overlooking the bay and loch, highly recommended for the view alone.

The quality of the suite was superb, traditional features were clean and well maintained, the four post bed was large and very comfortable. A large screen TV, tea, coffee and hot chocolate making facilities, trouser press, were some of the facilities on offer. The hotel had laid on complementary fruit bowl, whisky miniatures, biscuits and water.

The view to the front is simply stunning, the March landscape horizon was the snow capping on the mountains, absolutely fantastic. We sat in the afternoon watching sea eagles soar over the loch.

The bathroom was simply stunning, very large and recently upgraded, a large 2 person corner bath with shower occupied part of the room, accompanied by a basket with locally made soap, candles and bath bomb, lotion and a few other pieces, the attention to detail and personal touches were above anything I had seen in any hotel before.

As the hotel is on the outskirts of one of the quietest inhabited places on earth, you can be guaranteed a great night's sleep.

We ate in the restaurant twice, the food was excellent, the staff were very friendly and as they were local they were able to give advice and info on the area. After dinner guests are invited to the sitting room for coffee in front of an open log fire.

Breakfast was plentiful and very nice, a selection of breads, croissants and scones were available in addition to a traditional cooked menu,

The bar has a large selection of whiskies from all over Scotland, the prices are a bit on the steep side but the atmosphere is fantastic, probably the most relaxing drink I have ever had.

The local area is beautiful, you need to drive to holiday here as some of the sights are on the other end of the island.

There are other ways to experience Skye, I doubt if any of them are as relaxing or as luxurious as the Cuillin Hills has to offer.

We have already planned our next visit.

Room Tip: Go for a suite if you can afford it, it makes the stay simply special.

Stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights it was fantastic, the view from the front of the hotel and the dining room is beautiful, the staff from we arrived till we left could not be more helpful , the rooms were spacious warm and very clean as was the bathrooms if I want to be picky the shower was temperamental in controlling the temperature and needs to be checked out which when we told front desk they said it would be. We ate in the restaurant both nights and had two lovely meals fresh , hot and very tasty , breakfast in the mornings were the same excellent , a great credit to staff and management , we would certainly use this hotel and restaurant again if staying on the Isle Of Skye

Stayed here for 3 nights in March as a treat for my mum's 65th Birthday.

Hotel was lovely, room was a decent size and clean the only complaint I had was the bed wasn't what I'm used to so not the most comfy.

Location was ok if you drive, quite a long dark(espec at night) hilly road into town if you wanted to walk the 15 mins to get there.

Views out to portree bay from the front of the hotel & dining room were lovely, food in the hotel was good too, decent choices at breakfast incl cereals, yogurts, fresh fruit etc then a choice of something from the cooked menu which didn't disappoint. Had an evening meal on two occasions, not much to choose from as menu is quite limited, however 1st night we had rib eye steak which was lovely & cooked to perfection, on the 2nd night both meals weren't as nice nor upto the standard they were the previous evening which left us a bit disappointed at the poor quality.

All in all if I was back in Portree again I would probably pay the Cuillin Hills Hotel another visit.

Nice hotel on a hill just outside of the village center. If you’re not in the mood for B&B, this is probably your best bet in this small village.

Pros:
• Amazing view from the front lawn and restaurant
• Quiet
• Great breakfast

Cons:
• Bed is a bit firm
• As a trade-off for its quiet location, it’s a bit of a walk to get to shops & restaurants
