I am not one to take time out to write reviews but, on this occasion, I felt obligated to put something down as, prior to my trip to the Royal Hotel, Portree, I had read a less than flattering review on tripadvisor. Needless to say, I arrived at my Hotel with some trepidation. I do feel that customers who right poor reviews have little better to do with their time.

Whilst there is little doubt that this Hotel could use some further 'sprucing up', several rooms have recently been refurbished. The exterior is immaculate and all the public rooms are clean and tidy.

My own room was large and airy, exceptionally clean and overlooked the harbour. The over bath shower was extremely powerful. The TV was small but functional and the room was equiped with all I needed for a 5 day business trip. The bed was HUGE.

All the staff were very friendly and the food was varied, enjoyable and competitively priced. The bar was well run and the staff exceptionally friendly and helpful.

All in all, extremely happy.

I asked the staff about the police with forensic bags story and it was nothing more than a non-paying guest who had left without paying - not a murder or drugs raid! All I had to do was ask staff to find out.

Avoid avoid avoid.
1970's youth hostel chic with house-keepers dressed as psychiatric nurses.
Stay didn't start well, when greeted by 2 policemen in surgical gloves carrying forensic bags.
Room tired. Would have looked dated 20 years ago. Draughty. Advertised with WiFi but this not accessible from rooms.
It's a shame because the staff are lovely and the location perfect but at GBP99 for a double room, it wasn't value. Needs a complete refurb.

One of the reasons we booked this hotel was because all the blurb said it had recently been refurbished, but this unfortunately was not the case. Only some of the rooms had been done and ours was not one of them. The decor and fittings were old and shabby with stained covers on the chairs . The breakfasts in the morning were a catalogue of disasters - there seemed to be too few staff to cope with the numbers as the hotel was full. We had to wait a long time for cooked food and the staff were lax in filling up the buffet, we had to wait for more glasses for juice, no milk for the cereal, no cups on the table etc. A poor experience for such a large and well positioned hotel.

We stayed with a group who were expected yet there seemed to be no-one on duty at reception who could cope with a large group. The room allocation arrangements and both meals were shambolic with little provision for Sunday breakfast at 8a.m. despite a request. Bedrooms were comfortable and the evening meal when it eventually came was good but it took ages and was too ambitious . With great views over the harbour it's a pity the personnel couldn't be more welcoming and helpful e.g. no help with elderly people's luggage when no lift . There was no Manager available for either day of the weekend which , when they were expecting a large group , is ridiculous.Problems with the number of rooms booked were dealt with in an unhelpful, disobliging manner.

The Royal Hotel in Portree is well situated in the town and overlooks the harbour so spectacular evening views can be got from your window. The size of the room was very good and the facilities within the room were average. I was a little dissapointed in the ensuite as this was very dated and needed refurbishment, decor around the hotel could have benifed from a general lick of paint, but saying that staff were very helpfull and breakfast was substantial.

We didn't stay here, just ate here. There are some great places to eat in Portree, but it doesn't include the Well Plaid in the Royal Hotel. The food is poor, a salad usually consists of brown wilted lettuce, some tomato and chopped cucumber, chicken that looks and tastes like it was made in a factory, and a nasty dressing. And as for the coffee - it is nasty and tasteless. The restaurant itself is lovely and comfortable. The staff are great. Please just spend a little more of your budget on better quality food and coffee. Or try experiencing some of the other great eating places in Portree - Cafe Arriba, Caledonian Cafe, Bosville Hotel...

We visited the hotel last Friday for a drink and a meal. The barman, a big bald man with glasses, was extremely rude and ignored us completely even though I was standing right in front of him at the bar. He served two or three customers who came in all the time ignoring me. I and my wife and friend eventually went into the restaurant for a meal and were left sitting for ages before my wife eventually got up and went to the girl to ask to be served. The food was extremely long in coming and when it did it was almost inedible. We had wonderful times in other places, ate really good food and met so many incredibly friendly Scots on our trip that we know it was just that one hotel that was so awful. Maybe the staff hate foreigners and just wanted to serve the Scots - I don't know, but it was horrible.
