“Nice hostel!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2013

I stayed here while traveling with a friend on a hiking/sightseeing trip. I think it was the nicest hostel we stayed at on our weeklong trip. The hostel is right in the middle of Portree and very easy to find. No long haul from the bus stop this time! The staff was very helpful--even gave us some hiking recommendations. The rooms were big, airy, and brightly-colored. There were enough bathrooms that I never encountered a line. Beware of the showers--if it is possible, the water at this hostel was almost too hot, and there wasn't anyway to adjust the temperature.

The only thing that we would have changed would be to have locks on the room door. Our room had no lock, and the door to the hostel was unlocked most of the day. We were a little worried about leaving our laptops in our luggage while we went exploring.

Thank you for your good review of this hostel, we've taken on board your suggestions about the shower water temperature and are in the process of having this better regulated. It might not have been brought to your attention but the inner door is locked between 12pm and 4pm and the outer door between 10pm and 7.30am when reception is closed, with a key card system for security. We are also currently having key operated lockers secured to the floor downstairs for any valuables. Hope you enjoyed your hike, and thanks again for your suggestions, you were lovely guests!

Had by far and away the most comfortable nights sleep on my holiday in this hostel. Bed was super comfy and I was lucky enough to get an attic room meaning my bed was a single not a bunk bed which makes a big difference. Staff very friendly and helpful, big communal kitchen. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars, is because it was very shabby, the bathroom was full of mold and the shower button got stuck every day (there was a warning on the shower door at least) and some of the hobs in the kitchen didn't work. Thus if you are looking for somewhere spotless I suggest you try elsewhere, but for everyone else this is a great hostel to stay in and a bargain for £17 a night.

Thanks for your generally good review of our hostel. Just to mention that we are in the process of upgrading our facilities, including a new fitted shower/wet room downstairs, and our current shower rooms. Glad you enjoyed your stay!

Portree Independent Hostel is a cozy and colourful place to stay, located in the town centre of Portree. The rooms are quite spacious and the beds are very comfy. There is a huge well-equipped kitchen with 6 cooking stations and a wonderful view over the bay. It serves as the common room for most people, even though there is also a lounge with a telly and sofas, where you can hang out and meet people. Showers and bathrooms are clean. There is a laundry as well, which is very handy for those who have been travelling for a while. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. If you are travelling by car, you can park it in the free long stay car park right behind the hostel.
We really enjoyed our time in Portree and felt very comfortable at the hostel! THX!

Hostel was delightfully colourful with walls painted in bright colours that mixed surprisingly well together. Room was carpeted so it's nice not having to walk around on the cold hard floor. Kitchen was very clean and well maintained. Only complaint is that there is no shower on the first floor where we stayed, so we always had to climb up to 2nd or 3rd floors to access the showers. But the good thing about the showers was how it comes on at just the right temperature that's not too hot or cold, which is a very pleasant experience after being blown around by cold wind the whole day.

The best thing about this place is probably its location. Centrally located at Portree Square, almost everything is within 2 minutes' walk from the hostel. Bakery for breakfast, several restaurants around, 2 minutes from the bus stop, 5 minutes from the harbour. There was even a small food fair at the square during our stay that sold great german sausages and snacks!

Portree Independent Hostel is a well priced hostel located across the road from the main square in Portree's town centre. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are pleasant with comfy and sturdy bedding. Linen is provided so there isn't a need to bring sleeping bags. The kitchen is also spacious, with several areas for cooking, so there isn't that feeling of being cramped. There is also a laundrette located at the back of the hostel if needed. For 3 nights, the three of us (myself, mum and dad) enjoyed our stay and will be back if we are in Portree.

Room Tip: If your wanting to stay in a family room, make sure you book early as they are taken very quickly...

Thanks to a tip-off from some locals, we came here to do laundry after a week on the road. The launderette it open to the public, you don't have to be staying at the hostel to use it. Walk alongside the hostel building on its right to the back, then turn left and enter a small room with four or five washing machines and a couple of dryers.

They don't sell detergent like bigger launderettes do, but when we asked at reception, they just gave us some for free. The place is reasonably clean, and there were quite a few people of all ages using the machines.

You can park in Somerled Square right across the road, which is convenient. Do phone ahead and ask about opening times, though, since I seem to remember them having some morning hours reserved for hostel guests or their own washing. And as always, bring lots of change, as there isn't a money changing machine on site.

Stayed here doing a three day cycling/climbing trip on Skye.

Management very helpful, beds very comfy, guests very pleasant, excellent kitchen facilities, and they supply linen so no need for sleeping bags.

Perfect and affordable.

MY one gripe would be the Wifi - it's a bit old-school to have a service like 'The Cloud' at £3 an hour (!!). They'd be better to just get their own Wifi and either charge people a token contribution for the code, or just do what most hostels do nowadays - make it free.
