“Don't miss the boat!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2013

We picked Toravaig House for a 5 night stay on Skye and thoroughly enjoyed it. The location was handy from the bridge and the ferry, and a good base for seeing the island (though the further reaches of it are a good day trip there and back!).
The hotel has 2 principal assets in our view. The first one is Rosemary who is the best receptionist we've ever met. Her recommendations for places to go were all spot on and she took care of everything we asked for during our stay - nothing was too much trouble or couldn't be fixed. The second is the owners' yacht Solus a Chiain. The day spent going out to Rhum and back under cobalt blue skies and featuring a superb on board lunch was truly memorable and we'd recommend the option of the day on the yacht to anyone staying at Toravaig House.
Apart from this the restaurant furnished us a couple of good dinners and 5 very good breakfasts. Nice to see breakfast cooked to order - always a big plus.
We picked a sea view room when we booked, and were a bit disappointed to find it had no bath. In fairness we were offered the chance to switch to one with a bath, but not so good a sea view, so we stuck with the first one. Hard to see how the building migh accommodate internal renovation to make either bathroom larger, but as a note to other guests, if you want a bath, specify it.
As to price (since it's commented on in other reviews) it's not the cheapest place, but we felt we got good value for high season. The tariff is about as high as it should go, though, and leaves no room for anything going awry.

Room Tip: Best rooms overlook the garden and sea

Far and away the best hotel I have stayed in. The only thing I am not sure about is the price; having bought a half price deal this was very good value, I am not sure I would have paid £200/night (total for 2 people B&B) however I do think that this is down to my financial situation and not the hotel being overpriced.

When we arrived we were invited up to the sister hotel to have a complementary soup and sandwich. This was the best soup we have had and was the basis for choosing to eat in the hotel that evening.

After a long walk in terrible weather we made it to our room (cases had been left with staff and taken to the room for us earlier). It was beautifully finished and very comfortable. The shower was excellent and left us ready for dinner.

An optional extra the 4 course or more like 7 when the various extra 'bite size' courses are included was top notch in terms of both presentation and taste. Everything was cooked perfectly and despite the amount of dishes you didn't leave the table overly stuffed. Service was impeccable with the staff appearing when you had finished your course as if by magic. There was no feeling of being rushed with e.g. heads popped round doors.

If I return to Skye with my current budget I would be saving up and looking to have this hotel as the highlight at the end of the trip, even if it was only for a night.

Stayed one night on way back from Harris. Very nice clean, modern rooms and lounge, dining area, but was expensive room rate and a bit annoying to get charged £3 for 4 small shortbread biscuits with afternoon tea. Generally overpriced for what it was.

Rosemary is a great hostess with the experience of how to handle every guests needs. Thank you for a wonderful stay recently!
Sailing experience was spot on in the capable hands of Ken and Ann - perfect picnic spot at Tarbert at the top of Loch Nevis and perfect winds to take us there and back - thank you.
Food was out of this world with such a "rising star" at the chef - thought I was in a version of Master Chef. Just oustanding .

The room and bathroom were spotless and appeared to be brand new. The bathroom was a bit small but certainly larger than many european bathrooms I've seen. The food was absolutely amazing. I have a gluten allergy and the chef adjusted his prix fix menu without hesitation and they even had gluten free dinner rolls :) Excellent wine list too. The staff was absolutely the best. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I will most certainly return!

We just completed a weekend stay at Toravaig...one word - SPECTACULAR. Service, Food, Location, and Overall satisfaction were way beyond expectations! We are US Expats and have traveled throughout Scotland and other countries...this little gem is well worth every penny for the quality of relaxation and Isle of Skye experience! Special mention is around service upon arrival through departure, including friendly chats with both staff and guest of the hotel. Rooms are well decorated, extremely clean, and very comfortable! We will be returning to Isle of Skye, so we are really hoping to be able to have the opportunity to stay at the Toravaig Hotel - my guess is that it will really be difficult to stay due to others telling their friends of such a great place to stay while on holiday...just a brilliant hotel.

My wife and I spent 3 nights at Toravaig House and dinned their each evening. It has a deserved reputation for very good food. The chef is creative, the food standard excellent and the presentation support the plaudits it has earned. Breakfast also hit the mark with a good choice to fulfil a traditional or a continental taste (The smoked haddock and poached egg is particularly good!) It is a quiet small hotel by the nature of the fact that it has a relatively low number of rooms. In respect of rooms they are tastefully decorated to a high standards and equipped with necessary amenities. Our room I would say was verging on small (possibly not helped by the very large comfortable bed in the middle of it) but this was a minor thing. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. A very enjoyable stay that we hope to repeat at some time in the future.

Room Tip: One of the sea view bedrooms (Colonsay) has a large bay window and a view over the ruins of Knock C...
