“Lunch stop, before taking Ferry.”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

We had plenty of time to kill before the ferry took us back to the mainland, so lunch was calling, it was Sunday and most other cafe's were closed. The hotel allowed non-residents so that was great. The menu was good and fairly reasonably priced. We checked availability at reception and was asked to go through to bar area and we could get served there. A beautiful spot, we looked out over the garden, we had my partners mother with us who is of the older years, it was perfect for her, she went for the Scallops, my partner had the Smoked Salmon, and I opted for the old faithful, Haggis,Neeps and Tatties.....it was delicious. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We sat in the lounge next door and took coffee, relaxing in the more comfy chairs! We didn't stay in the hotel, so cannot comment on the rooms. I would recommend eating there as a one off.

Been back again for a sixth time! If anything the hotel and its garden and grounds have been improved a little although we did not feel that was possible. The staff are uniformly pleasant, helpful and caring. The town of Tarbert is a gem and the surrounding countryside is wonderful--hills, beaches wildlife etc. We have no hesitation in declaring that we intend to make a seventh visit to the Harris Hotel very soon

We stayed in this rather dated hotel for two nights. Our room was clean and adequate but rather old fashioned. We dined in the hotel on the first night only and found the food average and rather over priced for what was on offer. All the staff were very pleasant and helpfull.

Enjoyed two evening meals and one overnight stay with breakfast. Lovely room with separate room with sofa and tv a real bonus to have this extra space.
Staff friendly and very attentive.
My husband had steak two nights in a row, praise indeed from a beef farmer!
Plenty public space to relax and nice garden.
Would recommend.

This is THE old established hotel in town; a little tired in places, with rather traditional furnishings and decorations, a menu that could do with a bit of refreshment and updating. Perfectly adequate but could be so much better. Where is the supervision? Where is the passion? The setting of the hotel is excellent: it has a lovely relaxing garden for coffee/ lunch/ drinks. the service and quality of food in the restaurant need to be sharpened if the hotel has a chance of competing with other very high quality emerging hotels and restaurants in the immediate area

We stayed four nights in a deluxe double. Very comfortable but someone forgot the clean the bathroom after the first night?!?! And supervisors didn't notice it.

So too the coffee cup laid for breakfast that was dirty - should have been caught in the kitchen, then in the restaurant and not by the guest.

We ate in on the first night - not a lot to chose from and so we ate elsewhere the three other nights. They lost our business. No-one noticed?

Ordered smoked haddock and poached eggs for breakfast today - arrived with just one egg. Waitress offered to bring a second but by the time it appeared the fish was cold. There seems to be a lack of synchronisation between the guest needs and expectations and what the kitchen produces.

The hotel has a large group in house whilst we were there - they were noisy and unquestionably spoilt the restaurant experience for the other private guests including us.

Wifi limited to the public areas - and very iffy

There are really good hotels and restaurants in The Outer Hebrides; this should be one of them but isn't right now. If they raised their game they could be there.

Booked via Hebridean Hopscotch. Looked at website for this hotel, menu doesn't bear any resemblance to it. Had Venison burger , very dry, chips rather dark. Breakfast very poor !. Ordered scrambled egg with smoked salmon, eggs not freshly cooked, smoked salmon from some cheap catering pack you could tell by shape, and no taste. My wife asked for cheese and biscuits, told they didnt have any. wine i requested from the wine list - out of stock. Bedroom small and lack of ventilation, couldn't open window, although told it does open. It's a big hotel and there were a lot of guests, but very few to be seen. Absolutely no atmosphere it was like the Mary Celeste. Lovely well stocked bar.

Room Tip: Not top floor !

This is the second time I have stayed at the Harris Hotel and this time we went for a 'select twin room' (room 9). This was very spacious and seemed to have been newly refurbished with leather chairs, views over the garden and a really great bathroom with strong shower. We went for a three nights for the price of two offer which meant that the room including breakfast only set us back around £200. The breakfast is really good with continental, full Scottish or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs included in the price. Mountains of toast and good quality steaming coffee topped it off nicely.

We ate in the restaurant one night. We had chicken in bacon and a burger which were both really tasty and of a much higher standard than we were expecting. The burger was home made and more like a gourmet posh burger than the plain thing I was expecting.

The bar is really excellent with interesting St Kilda related articles on the wall and really good beer on tap. The whisky stock is exceptional with over 200 whiskies on shelves behind and around the bar (not all of which are for sale).

The staff were very friendly and took time to stand and chat and also gave useful advice on whether or not the ferry would be sailing back to Uig as it was very windy.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Really first class.

Room Tip: Go for a 'select 'room as they are really high quality.
