We arrived at Bathgate Rail Station to find rain falling and a temperature of twelve degrees (Celsius). Not a taxi in sight. So we telephoned Margaret at Hillview to ask her to ring for a taxi. But her husband, Derek, arrived, loaded our luggage, and drove us up the hill (how else would there be such a splendid view? On a clear day it is possible to see Ben Lomond from an upstairs window.)
We stayed four nights, so we were lucky to find such a gem of a place.
The train took us to Edinburgh twice, and we indulged ourselves walking about, and taking bus tours. Another day, following Margaret's recommendation, we caught the bus to Falkirk to see the famous wheel
At night we ate in pubs, which would have been incredible value even without the advantage conferred by the over-valued Australian dollar. Another night we ate in a not so cheap, but excellent Italian restaurant.
Although the route from the B&B to the station was sort of steep, it was quite walkable. Margaret showed us a short cut through parks, and we could get to the town centre in under ten minutes.
Another reviewer used the word "sumptuous" in relation to the breakfasts, and we agree.
We would recommend Hillview to anyone.
