“Remarkable value - and setting!”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

We spent three nights at Pool House in late October and it was a wonderful stay despite the disappointing weather. The location is stunning: the view down the loch from our sitting room window will be hard to beat! Our suite was beautifully if quirkily decorated and the four poster bed was extremely comfortable. The breakfasts were magnificent and set us up perfectly for the day (we barely ate anything between breakfast and dinner). We had dinner each night as well, which was a good choice given that the weather didn't encourage much driving after dark. The food was excellent and represented good value even though it was not cheap. The staff were, without exception, very friendly and helpful. Little touches like the hot water bottles in the bed when we retired after dinner and the complimentary sherry in the room were much appreciated and really tip Pool House into the excellent category. We look forward to returning in the summer!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Diadem suite - the view alone makes it worth trying to book!

Where to start. Stunning rooms, stunning food, stunning whisky collection, stunning views. Service was excellent and a thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile stay. All this, despite not seeing the butler ghost fella (wrong time of year i think?). Peter, his wife and daughters were briliant hosts and very knowledgeable about the house, Poolewe and events surrounding both. Upon departure, we declared that we would return...with friends, and that firmly remains the case. Splodge the cat was also a hit. Having read other reviews, i was very surprised at the one titled "Rip-Off" . Then I read that the chap had a "whiskey [sic]" collection of his own and it all made a bit more sense then!! Some people just like to whinge and don't appreciate quality. There's no legislating for that.

Stayed at the Poolhouse for 2 nights in the Scharnhorst suite ............room and view were fantastic. Peter the host was excellent and very knowledgeable about the local history. Food was 5 star. Would certainly recommend the Poolhouse to anyone going for a romantic holiday, or as a base to tour the Wester Ross region.

We have just returned from a four night stay in this delightful and charming privately run hotel. We stayed in the HMS Bramble suite which we thought was one of the loveliest and most comfortable suites we've ever stayed in. It was furnished and decorated to a very high standard with beautiful bedlinen and plenty of lovely fluffy white towels in the enormous bathroom. Stretching out fully for a soak in the freestanding rolltop bath, then wrapping oneself in a generous bathrobe with a glass of sherry from the decanter in the sitting room and looking out over Loch Ewe is a truly pampering and luxurious experience.

We enjoyed getting to know the other guests over pre-prandial drinks and canapés before settling in the dining room for a five course dinner. The food was of an exceptionally high standard. Food is largely locally sourced and of outstanding quality. The wild salmon and wild smoked salmon were particularly good. Full marks for presentation too. The view from the dining room window was amazing. The sunsets were fantastic as we watched otters and seals feeding in the loch.

Then into the bar which has a world class whisky collection and a full size snooker table. This was the perfect end to the day.

This is a small family-run hotel which maintains traditional standards of hospitality. The style is unique nowadays, some might call it eccentric, we would think of it as a welcome and refreshing change from predictable, modern, plastic, corporate five star establishments. If you are looking for minibars, a 50 inch flat screen and highspeed internet access in all rooms and a spa facility then this is not the hotel for you. However, if you are looking for a relaxing and romantic getaway with superb food and wine in stunning surroundings, then beat a path to Pool House.

Room Tip: All four rooms are equally good and have loch views.

Pool House Hotel in the small village of Poolewe, Scotland, is a remarkable venue. Four rooms in the main house are sumptuously decorated -- each named for a ship which moored or fought in Loch Ewe during WW II. The food is terrific. We stayed for a week, exploring the beautiful area each day as far as our car would take us. When we bid goodbye to the Harrison family, it was as if we were leaving good friends. You cannot go wrong with Pool House.

I've decided it's time to write a review of Pool House. I say that because my other half and I have been coming here for some years now, because it is quite simply our favourite place on the planet. We have somewhat selfishly perhaps never posted a review on Tripadvisor, on the basis that everything was perfect so there was no need! But numerous idyllic stays should I think merit a mention, even if we do run the risk of making it harder to book our favourite suite at peak times.....

Location first. Pool house is situated quite literally on the shores of Loch Ewe, with beautiful views across the water. During the evenings you can watch the sun set across the loch and during the days you can watch the ever changing Scottish weather roll across the landscape. Sometimes we've seen seals swim close by and feed, other times we watch the bird life, including herons and other local species. It's a very tranquil place to be, even if the weather outside is more exciting!

The first time we went to Pool House we chose it partly because of its proximity to the Torridon mountains and the glorious walking country that is Wester Ross and the north west coast of Scotland. If you want to explore this magnificent part of Scotland (actually the best part in our view!) then there is no finer place in which to base yourself. Loch Maree is a very short drive away and with good reason is it described as the most beautiful loch in Scotland. Equally however, if you are just passing through, or want a romantic luxurious weekend away, then Pool House is perfect.

Where to start with why? The accommodation is out of this world. We've stayed in 3 or 4 of the different suites and the furnishings in all of them are very special and very beautiful. Our favourite is Nairana, which is full of antique pieces from India, a very very romantic place to stay. However all of the suites have their own individual character and attractions, and we would happily stay in any of them. We have stayed in suites in some of the top hotels in London and Europe but Pool House blows them all away.

Although it can be difficult to drag yourself away from your room, other parts of Pool House have their own draw. There is a fabulous sitting room / library which always has a real fire going, and from which you can watch the wildlife on the loch or just take in the view whilst you sit and read. There is a large snooker room and bar which house's Peter's extensive collection of whiskies. My other half is doing his best to work through the entire collection....

The dining room is another beautiful space, that offers great views over the loch and which provides a complimentary setting to the food. What to say about the food......Well, it's consistently amongst the best that we eat in Scotland, and I'm comparing it with the likes of The Three Chimneys, Tom Kitchen's restaurants in Edinburgh, the Roux brothers restaurants at Lochinver Lodge and Rocpool Reserve, The Witchery, and so on. Its not as "fine dining" as some of those places, but actually the simplicity of the dishes let's the food shine through, and the sea food, meat and game are some of the best we've ever had. The haggis bon bons are to die for! It's a set menu every day but there's never been anything on it that we haven't happily devoured, and they do bend over backwards to cater to allergies and dietary requirements. There's a good wine list with a good balance between higher and lower priced bottles. Compared to other comparable places, the price for the dinner menu is extremely good value for money. The breakfast is also fantastic!

So the location is fabulous, the rooms are fabulous, the food is fabulous, but actually what makes the place special are the people that run it. They define the true meaning of hospitality and cannot do enough for you to make your stay enjoyable. You won't find a warmer welcome or higher standard of hospitality anywhere. As you would expect they are also extremely knowledgeable about the region and can help with ideas for things to see and do, or help make any arrangements or bookings for trips or outdoor activities.

My other half and I used to talk about planning our next trip to Scotland. Now we talk about planning our next trip to Pool House. I've given up organising weekends away at other luxury locations. He invariably says at the end of the trip "darling that was wonderful but I would rather have been at Pool House...."

we stayed for 1 night after our wedding in Inverness. We stayed in the Campania suite, which was beautiful, made sure I had a bath in the lovely antique bath. From start to finish it was an amazing experience. The hotel is fantastic, like something out of a Bronte novel or film. Peter and his family were extremely welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner which we could not fault, from the lovely wood pigeon, chicken, cheese course and dessert - all were delicious. They were very attentive and even added lovely touches like scattering rose petals on out 4 poster bed. Would definitely recommend for a romantic retreat,

thanks for a memorable mini-moon!
