“Not recommended - could do much better!”

I read the reviews here and contacted the hotel to reserve three rooms for our family. The staff are really lovely and with this in mind we approached the hotel with confidence that we would enjoy our stay. Sadly we were disappointed. Upon parking we were greeted by the site of dried sewage from a drain overflow at the side of the hotel. This had dried and no effort had been made to clean it up. We were advised that we had been given the three best rooms. One room was nice the others were nothing special. Our room had a shower head that did not fit the holder, watered down soap in the dispenser, no bathmat and lightbulbs that needed changed. Clearly maintainance is an issue here. The evening meal was of the packaged - boil in the bag style of instant results, the vegetables were fresh however. Overall, this is a place that with work and care could do a lot better with a bit more effort and leadership. As it is its worth passing by. Given what we experienced, I am now more dubious as to the other reviews of this establishment on trip advisor.

What a relief after staying in terrible hotel on Islay decided to stop off before heading straight home from late ferry. Arrived late and met by owner, very accomodating, room lovely if maybe a wee bit dated but spotlessly clean. Only complaint was booked for 2 adults and 2 child but room had double bed and 1 single so kids had to share, not too bad. Breakfast is 7-9 am and we arrived at 9.05am but not a problem staff were terrific and breakfast was lovely. Also loved the lounge area to sit back and relax. Not to mention the attention to detail: pictures, tableware, sofas, books etc etc.
Definately recommend.

We spent almost 2 weeks in Scotland and England (including 4 star Marriott properties)and our stay at the Grey Gull was by far the most enjoyable. I read some previous negative comments about the manager (I believe his name was Mr.. MacLeod) but we found him to be very friendly and enjoyable. Based on my two teenage sons he even greeted us by name. He stopped by our table at dinner to find out more about our visit and to make sure everthying was acceptable. The restaurant staff was a delight as well and food was reasonable and delicious, They had a coffee machine that produced excellent coffee, Latte, etc. My sons had the the steaks and I had Lasagne which was hot and very tasty. Our room was basic but spacious and had a great view of Lochgilp. We were even able to pickup the free wireless from the reception area in our room. All this for a very reasonable rate and this was by far the best value and hotel experience we had in all Scotland. We felt very much welcomed and would recommend the hotel to anyone.

We stayed at the Grey Gull for a wedding with 2 other couples. On arrival we were met by a surly gentleman at reception. Both our friends -and as we found out later, many other guests- had a similar experience at sometime over their stay with the same gentleman. We were told to liase with the restaurant as to when we were going to eat since they could not cope with everyone coming at the same time. We had booked B&B, we did find out later that there is nowhere else to eat in Ardrishaig.
We ate in the restaurant - after liasing with the restaurant - really great staff, very attentive and accommodating. When we were in the sitting area later, we were still harrassed by the gentlemanat rewception ( / Manager ?) as to where the 5 people still to check in and eat in the restaurant were, since the restaurant was about to close. 2 friends were due to check in but we had no idea who the other 3 people were or who was supposed to be eating.
Our room was clean but basic (the previous comment about 80's furniture was on the button). The bathroom had scum around the base of the soap dispenser.
Again my comments go back to the man at Reception. When we were moving about the hotel if we met the gentleman, he would always pass by first - this appears petty but we were made to feel like a hindrance.
I believe that the gentleman made the bookings then decided that we would be rowdy/ too much work ? Go down the road and stay at Crear, better views and more welcoming staff.

My Husband and I have just returned from a 3 night stay on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast basis and we had a great time. The food was fabulous and the staff were friendly, helpful and extremely efficient. We will have no hesitation in returning and recommening it to family and friends. SUPERB VALUE FOR MONEY.

We arrived on Saturday and took a walk along the Crinan Canal. The whole area is great to walk. It is well worth watching for a boat to come in or out of the canal entrance to see how the Victoria locks work.

Our room was clean and tidy with crisp bed linen. The breakfast was perfect, you choose your cereal etc, have as much coffee and tea as you wish and the cooked breakfast was excellent.

We had dinner in the hotel each evening and the food was well prepared and very well served.

I would recommend anyone who enjoys straight forward good service, food and accommodation to stay here. The prcie was very reasonable too.

8 of us stayed at the Grey Gull for two nights. Fantastic service from the owner and staff. A beautiful lounge and restaurant, accompanied by a large selection of quality food. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to anyone. Have a look at their website - it gives a good insight into what to expect.
