The View Restaurant

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 Aug 2019
We stayed at Drimsynie Estate in may and had a really enjoyable break. Our 3 bedroom caravan was very clean and comfortable. We ate at The View restaurant in two nights during our stay and really enjoyed it. The staff were super friendly and the food was simple but very tasty. One of the staff told us they had been having a few problems recently and that a couple of staff had been parachuted in to help turn it around, and it seemed to be working.

Sadly our experience of the restaurant in August was not so positive. Although staying outside of the estate we came for dinner because we enjoyed it so much last time. When we arrived we decided to buy a bottle of prosecco, which was served at room temperature. When we mentioned this to the lad behind the bar he simply said that he was sorry but they didn't have any bottles in the fridge but if we gave him the bottle he would run it under cold soda water for 5 minutes. When I reminded him that the glasses had already been poured he suggested we pour them back into the bottle and he would cool it down! Luckily a lovely waitress stepped in and explained that they were having trouble with the fridge and ran off to the other bar to get us a cold bottle. I got the distinct impression that very little had been invested into staff training.

When we were seated we were told that they had no pizzas on offer which was OK for us but could imagine this being a problem for a lot of families eating there. We ordered 3 burgers which were very nice and a seagood linguine which was also good, although I do think that a chef should know not to serve mussels that have remained closed during cooking! Drinks service was extremely slow and we found it quite difficult to get someone to come to our table to take drinks orders despite the restaurant being far from full. Glasses with lipstick marks still on them were also very offputting. The place just seemend very understaffed and some of the staff undertrained.

I hope that Drimsynie sorts the restaurant out as it is a beautiful setting and has so much potential. Unfortunately maybe a lack of other restaurants located nearby is allowing them to continue in this way.

As a lodge owner we visit the facility’s regularly with the family. Each time I feel the hotel facility’s get slightly worse every time we go unfortunately . It seems to be a lot of small things but it’s beginning to all add up now .
Firstly the tiles in the swimming changing area and just plain dangerous .even though my kid was well behaving and walking with my hand ,he was slipping all over the place .its a shame because the pool is actually really good .

Secondly The gym seemed to have heating on which made it very uncomfortable to stay in to complete a work out.

Thirdly the kids arcade it’s getting more run down every time we go , from machines being out of order to start with to machines swallowing your money and others not giving out tickets for prizes.
A lot of the teddy machines didn’t have anything in them so couldn’t really be played . Felt like I was constantly at the desk asking for assistance with one machine or another .
One time the guy working there was walking about in the arcade in his bare feet , he shout have been wearing flip flops or some kind of shoe when he’s not at the pool side .
The slush machines were empty .
And finally the soft play closed because it needed cleaned at 6pm one night .. the one thing I thought wouldn’t break in the place .. I understand it would take a bit of time to clean what ever mess happened but when I asked for a time frame I was told it might be open tomorrow . Which when you have a toddler begging to go in isn’t any good so after that we just decided to pack our stuff and head home .

This has put me off going back any time soon . The kids arcade needs some new games for the kids to play.

On a positive the kids entertainment is on for an hour at night and the wean loved that and the squirrel characters that he could have his photo took with .

We went to dine at the View restaurant whilst on holiday in Lochgoilhead. We were seated at a very uncomfortable table, well away from those with the famous view and the temperature was stifling. We were then told that no pizzas were available due to the kitchen being short staffed. As pizzas constituted around a fifth of the whole menu and were what the kids had been looking forward to this was very disappointing. The adjacent take away shop (same company, shared kitchen, all within the same holiday complex) was serving pizzas. My husband tried to explore ways around this, eg ordering a pizza from there and bringing it into the restaurant etc, however the staff were incredibly unhelpful and inflexible. We eventually chose different options however the waitress was then extremely sulky and sullen, barely coming near us for the rest of our meal. It took half an hour for our drinks order to arrive, by which time we had finished eating and due to the heat and generally hostile atmosphere, could not wait to leave. Having said all that, the food itself was good quality on the whole, but the whole experience was extremely unpleasant.

Have just returned from a 4 night stay in Lapwing comfort plus lodge 8. Lodge overlooked the river, was close to the facilities without been too close, also near shop. Lodge was lovely, very well equipped, spacious and comfortable. It was our 5 month old puppy's first holiday and we were a little anxious about how he would adapt. Location was perfect...loads of walks right from the estate, in fact we only used the car on one occasion. Kids loved the indoor funhouse area and outdoor play area, hardly saw them & they made many friends.
Ate in the restaurant on the last night with trepidation, tried to book the goil Inn but they had a problem with the kitchen. Everytime we usually eat these types of complexes the food is expensive and awful....was not the case here. Obligingly fitted us in at 5.15, compromising as the kids were in an activity until 5.30pm, only available tables after that were 8pm, which was too late. So, they said as long as one of us were sitting at the table by 5.15 they would wait and take the order once the kids arrived. Food came quickly and was delicious, 4 clean plates ! Menu was slightly limited but would be fine for a few nights.
Kids activites great also. Our kids tried the airboards, which they absolutely loved, and the seascooters. Much better value than at other holiday parks, they got loads of turns on both and were very proficient at both by the end of the session thanks to the expert tuition given by Justin.
Only negatives were the entertainment was not great at all and when we returned from a long walk with the dog on the day that we left we tried to grab a coffee before moving on only to be told that neither The View or The Funhouse had a working coffee machine that day !
Will definitely be back

Room tip: Lapwing 8 is a great location

This review is going to be a long one, but with many good and bad bits to give both sides of Drimsynie. Things I wish we knew prior to booking/coming. If it’s too long, then scroll by, but I hope it helps someone!

Starting off with the good things! Had a lovely stay here for my 21st birthday with my family (Pondview Lodge 3). The lodge was beautiful, comfy, spacious enough for 5 adults and a young child that took everything but the sink with us. There was plenty good condition utensils/equipment for a self catering family, we really didn’t need half the car load we took! We booked on the Archery, Water Walkerz and Wild Wild West activities and they were great. The pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi were all great too! The food in The View restaurant and from the DH Takeaway was delish and none of us could fault it. The deals for the kids menu was fab, but for the 3 days we were there the menu and specials were the same for lunches and dinners, not too much choice. Alcoholic drinks were cheaper than soft drinks - £3.15 for a Pepsi!

On to the bad bits. We had a 2 hour drive to get to the lodge and my family had a 3 hour drive and 2 hour ferry to get here. With leaving so early and having such a long journey ahead we called reception first thing prior to arrival and asked about early check in, as normal check in is 4pm. We were told it couldn’t be guaranteed but it shouldn’t be an issue - bit contradictory? We arrived at 1pm as we knew we would be able to use the facilities until we got into the lodge. We asked on arrival if the lodge was ready as we had called but it wasn’t. We then asked again at 3pm (just 1 hour earlier than check-in) and it wasn’t ready. We then asked again at 4:15pm, AFTER check-in opened, if the lodge was ready yet, and reception called for an update on the lodge. On the phone we heard reception say Pondview Lodges 1 and 2 were ready but 3 wasn’t. We had been up to ask 4 times so they knew we had been waiting probably the longest, but we weren’t able to get one of the other lodges. Despite the couple in front of us in the check in queue being allowed to change to other accommodation as theirs wasn’t ready?? Angry was an understatement at this stage. We got into the lodge at 5:30pm and after complaining twice about this we finally managed to speak to Management and got a refund on our £75 rover passes for activities! The negatives about the activities are the badminton equipment badly needs updating and more than half of the arcade machines either were out of order completely or just swallowed pound coins without doing anything, and returned no tickets to claim prizes. We thought with it at least being July and peak summer time they would have the arcade machines working! Also no cash machines worked in the complex, we had to drive into the village to go to the post office to lift cash! As I mentioned the meals were great, however we booked in for 8 people at 7pm for my 21st birthday meal on the Saturday night. We arrived at 7pm to have no table prepared for us and we only got seated at 7:20pm. I’m appalled to say that our meals arrived at 9:35pm, my 3 year old nephew had fallen asleep before he got his meal!! We saw at least 3 different families complain which really put a downer on the evening for all of my family, especially the additional 2 people who had traveled an hour to join us for the meal! The meal came to over £150 and that’s excluding 3 rounds of drinks, for the staff to not even apologise for the delay or offer any type of discount for waiting 2.5 hours to be seated and served - they weren’t even busy!! We were the last ones left in the restaurant! My recommendation would be to either book in for dinner at 5pm if you have a hope of eating before 10pm or take your own food for dinner. We were then back in the same restaurant with the same menus for lunch the next day for nobody to say sorry again about the delay with the food the night before when it was all the same staff.

Overall a lovely stay as we had enough fun as a family in the lodge to distract from the negatives! Would probably stay here again in future as it’s great for kids but wouldn’t hurry back. Apologies for the long review but I wish I had known information like this before we came - hopefully it helps others.

Visited the complex for a weeks holiday. Fantastic facility and met all our family need regardless of the weather forecast.
Calum at the leisure desk has been a fantastic help to us as we’ve pestered him for every but if information we required. Nothing was a bother to him.
The kids also had a great time at the archery with Justin who helped it daughter achieve her goal of hitting the target. She was chuffed.
Thanks for your help guys.
