“Drab and Dismal”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

We stayed here while on a cycle trip in Kintyre. When we arrived there was nobody there but there was a note on the door telling us to go in and what room we had.
On going in it was so dim and dismal we almost turned round to find somewhere else, I think this is what we would have done but we had paid in full through a booking site so decided to stay.
Our room was no better and had a smell of damp and was dusty.
On seeing the owners we commented on this but to say they seemed less than interested is an understatement.
We had intended to eat here that night but on seeing all this ate at the nearby hotel.
The breakfast next morning was ok but once again served with a couldn't care less attitude.
This is one place we were glad to see the back off.

Room Tip: Find another B&B

Thank you for your review, could you please advise the date you stayed as I am having trouble reconciling it with our records.

I am not sure how the place can be called drab and dismal as its all painted white but nevertheless less people are entitled to their opinion.

As you can as you can appreciate we are a small family run hotel in a rural area, we have only weekly delivery's and due to this have to pop out each day to collect fresh stock, we do however leave a note for guests which allows them to check into the hotel at any point during the day and are not restricted to specific check in times and so far most guests are very grateful for this as it allows them access to their room early.

As it is an owner run hotel there is no way any comments made about the rooms would be dismissed, if you could describe who you spoke to please so this can be investigated? there are only three of us so it shouldn't be hard to narrow it down.

I am also a bit concerned about the couldn't care less attitude, as you can see from our extensive reviews regardless of anything else our attitude is never couldn't care less it is simply not within our make up to treat people in that manner, again can you describe the person so this can be investigated, but quite frankly it is totally out of character. I look forward to your response.

Thank you Tracy for looking after us. Have to admit on first arriving at the B and B, I was a little disappointed but it is very clean and all the usual amenities. Single room is very small and fairly unique! Tracy offers honest pub grub which we enjoyed and is delightful. Very good breakfast too so would recommend despite a few misgivings!

The alarm bells should have started ringing when I had to pay in full, up front, months in advance !

Myself and two friends were walking the Kintyre Way (an excellent walk try it ) and had booked and paid in full for two rooms at the Ashbanks.
Imagine how we felt after a long days walk to arrive only to find the place closed.
We tried the front door which was locked, looked for any kind of message, there was none and tried to phone on the faded landline number in the window only going to voicemail.

The place looked very shabby and run down so of course we became concerned.

Our concerns were not helped when we talked to neighbours and locals passing by only to be told this had happened before and it was not the most reliable of places.
After waiting from 16-30 to 17-45 and still no one in sight we decided we had better catch the last bus out of Carradale to Campbeltown.

Mobile reception is very patchy in Kintyre so I decided to wait until I arrived home to contact the owners, also I had a feeling the outcome might not be very good and did not want to spoil the rest of my walking holiday.

I was right, the owners were less than interested, they had been paid in full and basically said it was my fault. That the door was unlocked which is was not, and they tried to contact me by phone which I receiver two days later !

After booking, paying in full and telling them what time we would arrive I don’t think it should come down to a missed phone call.

Needless to say this has been an expensive lesson.

The Kintyre Way is a really nice walk, if you finish at Carradale stay in the Carradale Hotel or catch the bus into Campbeltown and back next morning, we used the Argyle Arms.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

Thank you very much for you review. I would like to respond to your points.

1. Firstly you made your booking via a third party website, not direct with ourselves. We do not take any money up front and are not paid in advance by these sites.

2. We are a small family run business, in a rural location with deliveries made once a week. We collect stock from Campbeltown daily to ensure that it is fresh and hence we pop out for a few hours each day. During this time we leave the front door unlocked and open with a note to guests on the inside door, clearly visable, advising them where we are and what room they are in and other relevant information. This allows our guests to book in at any time during the day and they are not restricted to small timescales, which most of our guests appreciate.

3. Another two guests checked in on the same day as you and had no issues whatsoever.

4. You called and when I answered the phone and told you that the door was open, your room keys in doors and that I would be there within 30 minutes. The phone went dead. I immediately called you back and left you a message and continued to try the phone until I arrive back at the hotel. The phone rang but you did not answer. The reception seemed fine until you hung up.

5. When we arrive back 25 minutes from your call you were no where to be seen. We drove around the village, went into the local pub but you were no where in sight.

6. We continued to call you until 11pm that evening. Leaving 4 messages, asking you to get in touch. If you were in Campbeltown the is no reason that you would not have had a signal to receive the calls and messages, as there is excellent network reception in Campbeltown and it covers all networks.

7. You didn't bother to contact us until the next week. When we spoke on the phone you requested a full refund and had an argumentative attitude, which dictated the rest of your insults during the call.

We have owned the Ashbank for over 7 years and have never encountered such problems and abuse from guests. Your review is a catalogue of mistruths from the door being locked to no reception in Campbeltown. I feel that you arrive in Carradale which wasn't your cup of tea and decided to go to Campbeltown and rather than cancel your booking you have tried to deflect the blame with a nasty and unjust review.

We currently have a 94% rating on Trip Advisor with 26 excellent and 8 very good reviews out of a possible 40. I appreciate when guests take time to leave a review as feedback is very important to us as we know there is always room for improvement.

The room was fresh enough. Good sleep. Decent breakfast. We were the only guests and the place was a bit cold. Fair bit of dust on the wardrobe. I am 6ft and the owner was about 5ft, not good for my asthma.

Firstly let me get the negatives out of the way.. IT IS NEVER A HOTEL in a million years! Its a B&B...go there with this expectation and you will not be dissapointed.
Having said that, it is a great wee place for a kip. The two lassies (sisters I think) go out of the way to make you feel welcome...nothing is too much trouble.
the food? Pretty bog standard microwave/pub nosh....not bad but not great either.
Better places to eat in Carradale. The location is second to none however and the rooms are fantastic.
A wee bit pricey but then you have to expect the 'Tartan Tax' in this neck of the woods.

We arrived at the hotel late and were met by the manager who proceeded to offer to open the bar which was closed so that we could have a couple of night caps. We had to leave early the next day so we had to pass. When she discovered that we would be leaving the next day before breakfast, she insisted that she would make us a lunch to take with us. This was available for us the next morning as we checked out. We did not get to spend anytime in Carradale, but if the village is as nice as the service at the Ashbank, I will definitely return.

We went on the last night of our holiday for a meal as it was local to where we were staying. It's a small place with perhaps five or six tables. There were only a few people eating that evening which was a surprise as the food was surprisingly good. We just wanted something simple as we didn't have much time but my daughter couldn't get enough of the Nacho starter and the main courses were very good - better than you'd expect from such a small place.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the other guests, who were staying, clearly enjoyed themselves as well.

Good for a simple, well cooked, quiet meal
