Stayed 2 nights to celebrate a special birthday and we were not disappointed. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. We ate in the bar and in the main restaurant and found the quality and quantity to our liking. If I was to find fault it was with the breakfast which arrived very quickly after ordering and suggested it was not freshly prepared. The rooms were large and very comfortable. We had a ground floor room which had a delightful verandah with stunning views onto the loch. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Select a room with a balcony or ground floor verandah

Summary:

The hotel is converted from the old train station of Kentallen which the owners have maintained the theme and history of the station while having a modern, updated and current hotel at the same time. The hotel offers spacious modern rooms with stunning views and a swimming pool. The hotel is about 5 minute drive from Glencoe, 25-30 minute drive from Fort William and 30 plus minute drive to Oban.

Our Stay:

We stayed two nights in July at the Holly Tree Hotel in one of the standard rooms. All the rooms look onto the stunning picturesque Loch Linnhe and mountainous landscape. The rooms are large, modern and spacious. During our stay was a hot weather spell and we found the rooms could of done with air conditioning or fans to improve sleeping conditions. The rooms have a TV, free Wi-Fi but do not have a safe.

The pool and sauna are pleasant and a nice addition to the hotel.

The restaurant is very good offering some great local cuisine and seafood dishes. If you are not a seafood fan there is plenty of other options to choose from. The breakfast in the morning was enjoyable and you can pick and choose what hot food you want from the menu.

The hotel is very clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

There is plenty to do within the surrounding area from castles, landmarks, towns to explore, mountain biking, road cycling, walking, climbing (rock and ice), kayaking, canyoning, skiing in winter and plenty more.

I've never understood who decided a family room is only for 2 adults and 2 children. Our family has 2 adults and 3 children. As a result like almost always we had to book 2 rooms at the holly tree. That's the first negative but not their fault. The rooms were both excellent, as were the facilities and the food. I'm afraid the staff were only superb and for our stay came a close second to the absolutely stunning scenery. Who would have believed that an hotel situated on the edge of a busy A class road could provide such a tranquil setting. When I opened my window (which thankfully wasn't fitted with, and didn't require a safety seal)all I heard was the gentle splash of waves! No traffic noise or rowdy bar louts. Kids loved the pool, and were well catered for food wise. Apparently the chips were best ever! Second negative was I didn't see name tags for staff who I'd have liked to thank by name for their terrific service. 3rd negative was we only stayed for one night. We could have spent another couple of days in area but moved to Hilton coylumbridge which isn't half as good for the same money!! Every days a school day!

Very updated and current, the hotel was better than expected. The pool and sauna are nice plusses and this added to the experience. From your room you can look across the firth, or you can walk around the grounds.

The only misgiving was the fish in the restaurant wasn't close to what I expected…and would seem to be overrated. I had the scallops which may not have been as fresh as advertised. The breakfast was extensive and tasty.

Room Tip: Some have outer decks.

Very good quality hotel, certainly at the top end of what you would expect from a 3 star hotel. We stayed in a Captains Room, which had a small balcony overlooking the loch towards the Ardnamurchan peninsula but the view across the loch was simply breathtaking. The room itself was rather basic, but spacious, clean and comfortable. There were some aspects which were a little tired (rather tatty tea tray and one or two scuffs on the wallpaper),and ideally a small table on the balconyt would be a welcome addition, but the mesmerising view from the large patio windows forgives those minor niggles! The service was good and most of the staff very friendly and helpful. The food was good, with decent portion sizes and ample choice of excellent quality seafood on the menu and a special starter most nights, one of which was dressed crab and proved an excellent choice. All the food was freshly cooked and the only small criticism is that it was a bit heavy on the amount of sauces, but there was the option to have the sauce served separately. Unless you have a large appetite and intend to have all 3 courses and the most expensive items on the menu it would be more cost effective to take the bed and breakfast option, rather than the £30 per night inclusive dinner option. We would certainly consider staying here again.

Room Tip: The captains rooms on the first floor are spacious and comfortable, with amazing views of the loch f...
