“Tranquil gem with amazing location, delicious food and delightful hosts”
Reviewed 25 August 2011

We stayed here for five nights in the week before Easter 2011 and had a wonderful, relaxing vacation. The guest house is marketed as a luxury establishment, which is certainly true: we had multi-course breakfasts with the most exquisite food, slept on high thread count sheets, enjoyed home-baked cookies every day in our room, were treated to soaps from a local company and cuddled up by the fire that was waiting for us every evening in the guest lounge. The hostess, Maria, is a world porridge champion, and the porridge was delicious, as were the many other breakfast offerings, including free range local eggs and smoked salmon from a nearby loch. The hosts were extremely knowledgeable about the local area and gave us great tips for hikes, places to eat and places to avoid. We stayed with our dog, who was greeted by the impressively regal MacDuff, the resident Italian spinone. The resident cat, Conan, was also very friendly. Although we stayed at the guest house as a base for hiking and site-seeing, we perhaps most enjoyed the peace and quiet of the beautiful house and the large garden in which it is situated. We cannot recommend it highly enough and look forward to going back again soon.

We stayed 3 nights: they give us excellent breakfast and good directions to see the surroundings. Scotland gets better if you stay at Roineabhal.

Marea personally came out to greet us, and this was like home from home, we had many questions before arrival for a wedding locally and Marea was most helpful , my wife Sally needed a hairdresser and Marea helped with that and pointed us in the right directions , we made an early exit before breakfast times and Marea was able to give us a full breakfast,Highland hospitality at its finest, the room were delightful, and the setting is a haven of peace and tranquility, we will go back later as tourist and look forward to enjoying our stay, thanks Marea and Roger.

Room Tip: all rooms peaceful, rambling stream to front .

My husband and I visited Roineabhal last October and loved our visit. Maria's cooking was outstanding. One meal in particular as as good as we had subsequently at the Three Chimney's on the Isle of Skye. The location and the building reminded us of home: creekside, timber frame etc. Being Canadian and not used to driving on the other side of the road, we didn't venture out at night to eat out. But since Maria was such a good cook, it didn't matter. The room was very comfortable, but we would have liked a queen sized instead of the double. Overall, it was an outstanding experience.

Maria, Roger and MacDuff made us feel truly welcome in this haven from the busy outside world. A damp weekend could not dampen the experience. Although Maria was having time off from cooking, she put together a fabulous platter for us devoured in front of an open fire on a comfy couch. My daughter (7) was made to feel special, taken for walks by Roger and MacDuff and declared this "the best holiday ever!". One to seek out to recharge the batteries.

We first visited Roineabhal in June 07 on honeymoon, arriving tired but excited. This time around, our first trip without young family, was the same experience. Roger and Maria have a great family house in a tucked away corner of Scotland. It is set in idyllic and peaceful grounds. Both Maria and Roger were extremely welcoming and hospitable to us throughout both of our stays. Maria's cooking is superb and we enjoyed delicious breakfasts and dinners. Local walks and attractions filled the days and relaxed us from our usually hectic lives. We will definitely return whenever we can for some more essential R&R.

Roineabhal is tucked away about 6 miles from the main 'A' road and is excellent for a relaxed trip sightseeing around Argyll.

The rooms were lovely, Maria & roger clearly pride themselves in providing a quality service and this is reflected in the rooms. Spotlessly clean, high quality bedding and acessories, and fantastic bathroom products.

We had booked a meal for the first evening and weren't dissappointed, I have eaten out in many great hotels and restaurants and Maria's food would not be out of place in any of them. Perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned and generous portions.
Then the opportunity to retire by the open fire and relax, you couldn't get much better.
Breakfast was fantastic a good selection of ceral, fruit / yoghurt and the cooked breakfast is a must - again the quality of produce was plain to see.

We had no fixed agenda for our time in Argyll but Maria was very helpful and provided lots of advice and suggestions for what we could do - especially important when the weather wasn't being particularly kind - we ended up on a bit of a road trip and took the opportunity to try the food at the George as Maria had suggested which did not dissappoint either.

All in all a great stay in a lovely house with great hosts.
