“Not bad for the money”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2014

Service was excellent, standard of cleanliness very high, beds comfortable. We were in 7 and 9. Hotel not busy so quiet at night. Food in the bar and at breakfast was good. However, the whole place is in need of decorating and refurb etc. The owners are new and so they are probably just getting round to things in turn. With a bit of money spent on it, it could be excellent.

Room Tip: Rooms 7 and 9 overlook the road so don't have much of a view

Thank you for taking the time to post a review and for your kind comments regarding our service, cleanliness and room comfort. With regards to the decor and refurbishing we have definite plans to bring the hotel more up to date and are excited at the prospect of developing the hotel for the future.

Stayed here Easter weekend. The bedroom was extremely comfy. The owners, Helen and Mark were really friendly and very knowledgeable about the area and things to do. We ate in the Bothy Bar on the first night and joined in the Quiz & Chips night - a great time was had by all and it was really fun. Breakfast was plentiful and the lady who served us was delightful. Dinner on the second night was scrumptious. The views from the hotel are spectacular and we were blessed with good weather. All in all a great weekend and we will certainly be back here before too long.

I stayed here for 1 night whilst walking the West Highland Way. I stayed in one of the cabins which consisted of 2 bunk beds, a heater and electrical points. More than adequate for my needs. The accommodation is dog friendly and my dog was allowed in the bar area where they served great food. The staff were super. Really friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to let me have breakfast in the bar area so my dog could be with me. I could not fault the hotel. The food was amazing with a good selection for vegetarians and reasonably priced too. I will definitely stay here again. Just to add to my lovely stay the hotel has the perfect outlook. The view is breath-taking and it is situated on the West Highland Way. The only point that could be improved on is better signage when you come off the Way. I got lost in Kinlochleven trying to find the MacDonald hotel! Oh, and another great point, it's also a biker friendly hotel!!

The Macdonald Hotel is situated at the end of the Loch, in the village of Kinlochleven. The views are stunning. We stopped there for 2 nights at the of April and loved it. The new owners Mark and Helen are friendly and really welcoming, going out of their way to make you feel right at home. Enjoying a tasty supper, in the Bothy Bar, with a nice pint, with the views over the Loch: doesn't get much better.

I stayed here for 3 nights as a base whilst exploring the Highlands on my motorbike. A very warm welcome from Helen on arrival was swiftly followed by my first (of a few!) pint in the Bothy Bar, watching the last of the sun disappearing and the Loch descending in to dusk. The bar has a good selection of beers and whiskies, all fairly priced. Mark and Helen both work hard to ensure that all of their guests are well looked after, even during a power cut that affected the whole of the north of Scotland - candles were quickly lit, and the beer kept flowing.

For bikers, this hotel is situated at the head of Loch Leven, you can arrive via the low road (from the North) or the High road (from the South) - both are excellent bits of road that will appeal to anyone who enjoys a few twist and turns.

Whilst stopping there, I did a route west via Ballachulish/Oban/Invergarry/Crianlarich, and another North via Applecross/Drumnadrochit/Fort Augustus - again, would thoroughly recommend these routes. Amazing roads with incredible scenery.

In all I covered 1707 miles across 6 days. On the days I spent at the Macdonald, I knew I would be going back to a pint, good food, a very comfortable bed for the night and a hearty breakfast to set me up for the next day.

Ravishing location and warm and friendly hospitality. Tasty food in generous portions hit the spot after a day in the hills. This is a must-stay location for West Highland Way and all the rooms, cabins and camping were full on our stay. The Bothy bar has a great selection of malts and local beers. Sit and look out at the lock and feel the stresses and strains drain away. Under new, very friendly and welcoming ownership.
