“Glorious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2012

My partner and I visited Collete and Steve this weekend and it was just glorious. The weather was beautiful so we could explore and enjoy the scenery and surrounding areas. The room was hot (although it was 29degrees outside!) and very clean, modern with every amenity of a 5* hotel. Lovely and breakfast, and beautiful fresh and homemade selections of jams, yoghurts etc. A great peaceful find.

Hi MScott18!
Thanks for your positive feedback! we are glad that you enjoyed your short visit - perhaps you will be able to stay a little longer next time you are in this part of Argyll?
I recall the "freak" weather when you visited 29/30 deg C is most unusual here - hence houses being designed to keep heat in! Although not economically viable to install air conditioning for a once in three year occurrence we do our best to keep the bedrooms cool by leaving windows open for as long as we can before the midges wake up at night. We trust that the tower fans and jug of iced water provided at night go some way to make things more comfortable.
We are naturally very happy to see that you describe our little B&B in line with that weather...glorious!

Thank you,
Steve & Colette.

I first stayed at the Stables B&B in 2009 and it was so good I returned in September 2011.
A relative and I were frantic to find accommodation around the area of Lochgilipeg to no avail.
Thankfully, the Tourist Information Centre there recommended we try The Stables in Achnamara.
On arrival we found hosts Steve and Collette welcoming, warm, friendly and extremely obliging.
Steve is a mind of information and knows a great deal of the surrounding areas and he’s hugely passionate about the variety of wildlife which can be seen locally throughout the year.
He and Collette have lots of useful literature and a growing number of books adding to their extensive library including a wealth of OS maps of the local area and beyond.
Situated in Knapdale Forest The Stables B&B is a charming, beautifully clean converted stable block, which previously formed part of a 19th century hunting lodge,
a lovely peaceful and truly relaxing location.
They provide an excellent continental style breakfast during the week additionally at weekends a fabulous Scottish breakfast not forgetting their fresh homemade bread, granola, yogurt and jams, wonderful.
Parking, TV, internet, tea making facilities, it’s all there and awaits you.
This remarkable B&B provides quality furnishing, is spotlessly clean, spacious, very comfortable, extremely good value for money and I highly recommend it.
Fabulous in all respects fully deserving it’s “4*” Scottish Tourist Board star rating.

Hi Chas!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review on TripAdvisor - it helped to take us in to the top 25 of all the B&B's/Guesthouses in Argyll.

It was pleasing to note that you were able to make the most of your - extended - second stay with us and certainly saw much that this beautiful area has to offer. Since you were last with us we have added to the library of local books so you will have even more to relax with in the future!

Thanks again,
Steve & Colette.

We have been to the area a number of times and not run out of things to do. This was the first time we stayed at The Stables - Steve and Collette provide the best B&B experience we've ever had, the rooms/beds/bathrooms are excellent, the lounge area is genuinely lovely and the breakfast (weekends cooked, nice continental on the week days) is what you want, plenty of home made produce including fresh bread, granola, yoghurts, preserves etc make this a really good experience. The Loch Sween - Knapdale area has so much variety, and it's not crowded. There are few really unspoilt places like this in the UK. Fantastic and going back again.

Room Tip: We looked at both rooms and would have been perfectly happy with either of them - don't worry ab...

Hi Richard M! It was lovely to meet you and to see your obvious passion for this beautiful location. We feel privileged to live here and are happy to open up our home to allow others to experience it too, encouraged by such lovely comments from our guests.
We’ll soon be stocking up on our granola ingredients again, and shipping in more of mum’s homemade jams ahead of re-opening for the 2012 season. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Stables B&B whenever you next head up to Knapdale, and thank you for registering with TripAdvisor to post your review.

We stayed one night here on our way back to Glasgow and wished we'd time to stay longer! Everything about The Stables was top notch - large comfortable room/bed, nice shower, very clean, large skylight in the room, tons of information about things to do/see in the area, beautiful guest lounge area with fireplace, and cable TV / DVD offerings. The breakfast was delicious - expanded continental including homemade breads/jams/yogurt/granola, juices, etc. This was a nice change of pace from the typical "full Scottish breakfast". Steve is an excellent host going the 'extra mile' in many respects. For example, he provided hot tea & shortbread in the lounge area when we arrived. On his recommendation, we ate at the Crinan Hotel's pub. The seafood stew and salmon were both great as was the view to the Crinan Canal lock. This B&B is a very rural experience and a really peaceful place to 'unwind'. Hiking options are just out the front door; dining options are about a 15 minute drive away. Overall, this is great place to stay, particularly if you're looking for outdoor activities or relaxing at 'home'.

Hi tmcdaneld!
What a top notch review from a senior reviewer!! Although your stay with us was short, en-route to the airport we are glad you were suitably impressed. Before opening we made sure we sourced decent furniture, especially comfortable mattresses and bedding – a key component of providing “Bed and Breakfast” I’m sure you will agree. It is nice to know that you enjoyed the second key component too! We often receive comments from guests about what a refreshing change the continental choice is from traditional cooked.
You rightly point out that we do not serve evening meals but as you were able to experience for yourself we are lucky enough to have some good restaurants at our disposal within a few miles – despite being in a rural area. As for me going the extra mile (!) it is always great to feel appreciated. For me customer service is paramount; after all you work hard all year to be able to afford to go on holiday, the least we can do is look after you whilst with us.

Thanks again for taking the time to add your comments to TripAdvisor,
Colette & Steve.

Hi MilsteadUmpire!
Just wanted to say thanks for writing a quick review following your stay in September. Your comments are appreciated – as you know we are a small B&B so we don’t get as many reviews as larger establishments. We are proud of the service we provide and it is always nice to know when it is appreciated.

Thanks again,
Colette & Steve.

We were camping on Arran and decided the weather was not going to get any better, so booked a room last minute at The Stables. We arrived after having packed away our tent wet, and straight away Steve offered that we could just put it up and dry in their back garden, which we then did. We were given a good overview by Steve of the area to view the nearby Otters or if we wanted a good restaurant or bar. There was a very useful map with local areas highlighted in the reception area.
Regarding the accommodation, this being our first time in a bed and breakfast, we were very impressed. All the furniture was to the highest standard and you straight away felt like home, but again the bedroom was more like a five star hotel, with slippers and dressing gowns. Iced water was placed in the room for when we returned in the evening. Oh yes, we had free Wi-Fi, which you do not yet get in all hotels.
Breakfast was also really good the following morning, with both a buffet and plated food. Lots of home made jams and goo quality breads and cerial. We paid £70, which I saw as very good value for money. If you return they have a loyalty scheme and you get a discount.
I have worked in a number of hotels around the UK for the past ten years and for a bed and breakfast, I could not fault them and have to say that I am won over by the personal service. For what has been achieved in the last couple of years they have run it, one should thing that they had been running it for ten years. I just want to thank Colette & Steve again for making our stay very comfortable and we hope to be back when we are next traveling west.

Hi Kjaerside!

We are glad that your first experience of a B&B was with us and that you were impressed enough to register with TripAdvisor and write a review of your experience. Summer 2011 never really materialised in Argyll so we are looking forward to a major improvement this year! At least you were able to see that we will do whatever we can to try and make up for it...tent drying facilities extending to the woodshed if you had not been able to pitch it in the garden to "blow dry"!! Hopefully if you come again you will be able to see the scenery in all its glory - it looks so different in bright sunshine, I can assure you.
Thank-you for writing such a wonderful review! Anyone looking at our reviews might be surprised to see how many are the first contributions to TripAdvisor by new members - I think yours gives an insight into why. We are even more bowled over by your praise when we consider that your background is the UK hospitality sector.

We hope to see you again in the future.
Colette & Steve.

This is one of the best B&Bs we've stayed in and we've stayed in lots. The house is beautifully positioned on the edge of Achnamara village, by Loch Sheen in Knapdale. Surrounded by woodland, you feel right in the heart of nature - on two of the days of our stay we woke to the sight of deer grazing just beyond the edge of the courtyard in front of the house. The hosts were generous with time, information and service and the house itself has been delightfully renovated - a mix of modern and traditional - making this place a stylish and relaxing base from which to explore the area. We had three days in Knapdale and had a wonderful time canoeing on the loch and walking in the woods. We saw an otter fishing for crabs, seals lounging on island shores, ospreys and seabirds,as well as the deer. We didn't see beavers although we did visit the area they have been introduced and enjoyed the trail and seeing the lodge. This whole area is teeming with life and is wonderfully quiet and peaceful - we saw very few people on our day-long walk - and the canoeing was brilliant on a flat calm Loch. We were lucky with the weather. The only downside is that Achnamara doesn't have a pub or resturant but there are some good ones a shortish drive away and the roads are so quiet this wasn't a problem. Breakfast was also lovely - fresh baked bread and continental breakfast on weekdays, the full Scottish at weekends - this was fine with us. Collette made us packed lunch on two days - even though this isn't a service she normally provides and we were grateful. We thoroughly recommend this area - and if you stay somewhere - stay here! If you can find a room - in a year or two they'll always be full. We hope to be back.

Wow! what a review; thank-you so much Heather & Roger! Feedback like yours makes it all worthwhile - and it is really uplifting to know that our guests appreciate our hospitality. When we decided to open up our home as a B&B just over three years ago, one of the main reasons was to allow others to be able to experience what we are fortunate enough to see every day.
It was great see you absolutely making the most of what Knapdale Forest and Loch Sween have to offer, both on foot and by canoe - I always feel that viewing this fantastic scenery from the sea gives it an added dimension... You may even have encouraged us to go off in search of our own Canadian canoe - Tia & Murphy might just be getting doggie life jackets for Christmas this year!!
As for seeing the local stars of The Scottish Beaver Trial...maybe next time??
Advance booking highly recommended of course!!!

Thanks again,
Colette & Steve.
