I have been coming into the Stag every nite for 5 days for my evening meals and to be honest I have felt so relaxed and been made to feel so welcome !! The food is superb, my first night I wanted a lite meal and the chef made me a mixed omlette with salad mustard seed dressing and homemade coleslaw it was delicious. Chocolate fudge cake, a large portion and ice-cream finished my meal !!! Deep fried mushrooms were with a salad and garlic mayonaise and were lovely. The macaroni is just like you would make at home really tasty and served with chips and salad. But the best was the sticky toffee pudding it was a really big portion but the sponge was light as a feather really really delicious. Tonite I had home made pakoras mushroom, chicken, fish and haggis with a spicy dip and homemade onion relish. Fabulous. I had a chat with the owner who showed me round the rooms upstairs. There is a beautiful function room with a bar and a dance floor. The rooms all have a wonderful aura of relaxation. Beautifully pristine white sheets and duvet covers with cream throws large en-suite bathrooms and tv tea/coffee etc. Dining area relaxing with one end having sofas and chairs and a fireplace with welcoming glow fire !! Also a bar in dining area. Nice atmosphere with relaxing easy listening music and realy helpful freindly staff. Next door to hotel is the Stag pub which has sky tv for those wanting to drink and watch football etc. I am thinking of having my wedding blessing here in December. I have had such a wonderful time just relaxing and enjoying the company of the owner and enjoying the wonderful food. Also free wi-fi. I would definately recomend this hotel for anyone who is looking for somewhere to relax and unwind. Family run hotel perfect for a quiet relaxing holiday to chill out and recharge your batteries. Well done I have had a fantastic experience eating here. Thank you hope to see you again soon. Gilly Stirling-Davies

Just to say that I attended a private function at 'the Stag' a few weeks back and I was suitably impressed. It was well known that the previous owners had run the place down so badly that I did not think that I would ever venture into it again. Well, I did. The new owners are gradually improving the Stag to its true former glory. The new owners are trying very hard to meet their customers needs and nothing was too much trouble for them. They are spending a lot of money improving the bedrooms too. They deserve your support.

I was in Lochgilphead and wanted to stay somewhere for a few nights. This is the biggest hotel in the town, yet it was boarded up. Nice-ish building, but sad to see it looking like many other nice buildings on this scottish coast - lost to another era. Great for squatters, I suppose.

We stayed at this hotel overnight on sat - sun. This is a family run hotel which is local to everything. We are a very young couple who enjoy walks and socialising in the pubs and this was a great place. We have stayed here on a number of occassions now and would always go back. Lochgilphead wouldnt be ideal for young families although it is great to see even if you are only travelling through and maybe going somewhere else. It has a lovely seafront and nice walks along that or up by the canel. My partner is origionally from there, so we go to visit his father and even though it is a very small place it is a busy place aswell. Thee are surrounding places to go if you have a car and lots of great scenary. The hotel itself is clean an tidy, the rooms are your standard bed, tv and ensuite which is great. The prices are average and not at all pricey. They have 2 great dogs and a lovely wee boy Cameron who is so funny. They offer meals at ight aswell.

All in all if you are looking for a quiet night away or a trip up north would defantely recommend the stag hotel.

The Stag charges £60 per night for a double room and claims to have a 2 star rating. We stayed for two nights on the second floor and couldn't wait to get away.

The staff were not unfriendly, but they didn't realy seem all that bothered about having guests. The stairs and corridor smelt of cigarettes and damp. Our room was fairly clean, but (like other parts of the hotel) I don't think it had seen a vacum cleaner in a while. The decor and furniture were shabby and dated, and the kettle was broken. The bathroom was a damp, carpeted room with a strange free-standing plastic shower cubicle in one corner. The light in the "shower box" was broken, so showers were rather gloomy events. The windows were in a state of disrepair - the paint was peeling, and they didn't close properly. There was secondary glazing in the bed room, but again, this didn't close properly.

The real problem was noise. The hotel has a bar that is open to 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. On the second floor we couldn't hear much noise directly from the bar. What we did hear all too well were groups of people talking loudly outside the back of the hotel until past closing time - either groups of smokers from the bar, or groups of teenagers congregating in the car park at the back of the hotel. There was also loud TV and radio from the room next door until well into the small hours both nights. As far as I could tell we were the only guests on the second floor and I got the impression that the considerate inhabitants of the other rooms were staff. If you're not staying out until 2am, then take some ear plugs.

When we checked out there was an unfinished pint of beer left on the reception desk - classy! On the plus side the cooked breakfast was okay.

Stayed 2 nights at Hogmanay. 2 star rooms, basic but clean. £30/night B&B.Tv and phone. Bath but no shower (but our friend's room did.) Staff friendly especially the waitress. Very good food. Good portions but limited choice. Great prices. Good selection of malt whiskies. A good choice for those on a budget.

  • Disliked — basic rooms

The hotel looks nice on their web pages and they charge the same as any other hotel BUT the rooms are very basic and the carpets should have been renewed some years ago, they have signs on entrance doors saying that any stains in the bed linnen will be charged for?
Hotel states that it has a 2 star rating.
