A truly warm welcome awaits any visitor to the Royal An Lochan Hotel in Tighnabruaich. Christine and Keith Bettis, although still fairly new to the area and the business really go out of their way to make their guests feel special. Having stayed at this wonderful old hotel before, you have to say that nothing has been lost in the transition to its new owners, who have managed to retain the essence of this historic building, whilst enhancing its charming and unique atmosphere. Overall comfort for their guests is a priority, illustrated by the significant improvements to the heating and plumbing systems and the dining and lounge furniture. The food is terrific and well-presented from a menu that makes use of local ingredients wherever possible. The members of staff are friendly and attentive, without being intrusive and obviously work well together as a team to get things done, their efficiency giving them the time to chat and answer questions about the local area and what it has to offer. Add to all this a loch side location with the most stunning views that change with interest across the seasons and with intensity throughout the day and you have the ideal place to use as a base for exploring Argyll and Bute or a perfect stopover when travelling across the Cowal Peninsula to Kintyre. The Portavadie ferry to Tarbert is only 10 minutes away and the Colintraive ferry to Bute is maybe 5 to 10 minutes more. Both allow you to make the most of a leisurely awakening – an excellent traditional Scottish breakfast, followed by the morning papers and then off into a brand new day. With almost 10 years’ experience of welcoming guests on the self-catering side of the hospitality business, it was lovely to be treated with such warmth and generosity of time. Whatever your reason for being in this magical place, once you’ve stayed at the Royal An Lochan, you will want to return.

Room Tip: The seaview rooms at the top of the hotel give an incredible vista

This was a gift to parents who very much enjoyed the location but dinner on saturday night was dreadful. The steak was barely edible and despite advising the waiting staff, nothing was done about it. A huge disappointment and will not go back.

Thank you for your comment, but as always there are two sides to every story and thankfully we are able on this review site to put our side across. Your parents enjoyed their starters and then moved on to their main course of two steaks. Within 3-5 minutes of them receiving their main course, I personally went to their table and asked the following question, “is everything alright with your meal” the answer from both of them was YES. The reason we ask this question within a few minutes of the main course arriving is to be able to rectify any issues that may be concerning our dinners. Your parents were given every opportunity at this point to allow us to sort out any problem they had with their food.

Rated 'Very Good' but expeting excellence soon as Keith and Christine work to restore the reputation of The Royal.

Our stay was enhanced by staff who are both welcoming and discreet.
The food served in the bar and restaurant was of a high standard (best mussels I've had in a long time and the breakfast haddock was quite beautifully smoked!) Wines and beers in the bar and restaurant were kept well and the public areas are a delight to relax in.
There is still some work to be done in some bedrooms(as Keith explained) but this should not put off any seasoned traveller who cares for comfort and unique surroundings.
I realise there have been some uncomplimentary reviews of this hotel but it may be that some people prefer the 'safety' of a predictable chain hotel....rather like prefering McDonalds to a harbour-side seafood restaurant, I suppose.

Lastly...thanks to Christine for the info on Pollphail (amongst other things!)

Have just returned home from a three night stay with my partner, our first visit under the new ownership but will definately not be our last. Keith, Christine and all the staff could not have been more pleasant or helpful. The food was very good, the public areas very relaxing for sitting reading or just admiring the view and watching the world sail past. The ambience and atmosphere in the shinty bar was as good as i had remembered it to be meeting both locals and tourists for some good conversation before sleeping very well in our large and comfortable room. Nice touch in the bedroom with the bottled water and excellent shortbread provided. We both hope to visit again soon.

We stayed for one night on our way back from Oban. We had room 2, Loch Riddon, with a seaview, 4 poster and the largest ensuite I have ever seen!
We had dinner overlooking the Kyles of Bute - my husband had mussels and said these were the best and plumpest he's ever had. The seafood is local so exceedingly fresh.
We enjoyed our stay and hope to go back sometime soon.
