“Excellent Break”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

Just spent 4 days at the Glenburn on a Shearings break and must compliment all concerned. All staff starting with Steve, (our main coach driver), all hotel staff, the staff on the ferry from Wemyss Bay and the local pubs, in particular The Taverna, were great, very friendly and very helpful. This hotel boasts a great location, has wonderful grounds and gardens and your main piece of luggage was taken to the room for you.

Considering how busy the hotel was there were no long waiting times for the lifts at all. In the hotel good quality entertainment is available every night, or there are quiet areas if you simply want to relax or get some 'own-space' time. The food was very good in the main and although the porridge was great it was a bit of a shame that no 'Scottish breakfast' was on offer.

Square sausage, black pudding and 'tattie scones' might not be great for the heart every day, but as a holiday treat would probably have changed my rating from 'Very Good' to an 'Excellent'. Regardless of this minor observation this was a very good break and the hotel is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Sea views are very popular and tend to go first but all rooms are to a very good standard according...

Many thanks for posting your thoughts on our site. By all acoounts you have enjoyed your stay with us and we really do apperciate your great comments. As you will see from other posting the views over the bay are mentioned a lot so I would recommend paying the little extra for them. Look forward to seeing you again in the not to distant future.

A spectacular place to spend a weekend. Four of us travelled to the Isle of Bute on 1st August, 2014. I for one had looked forward to it for 7months since booking. It didn't disappoint. The staff were helpful & friendly. The rooms were spotless. I had a sea view, to my surprise, & delight.. The food was delicious & plenty of choice. The waiting staff were so busy yet efficient. We had a very smooth crossing from Wemyss Bay & had no difficulty spotting the hotel with its superb elevated position, from the ferry. We were very impressed with Mount Stuart, also the Visit Scotland Centre with DVD's showing & seating provided.

Staying here to accompany my mother and her friend for a few days - and as the hotel caters a lot for coach holidays we were probably the youngest guests by about 30 years!
Although it is a fine, grand building, the most imposing in the town, it is not a 5-star, gourmet, all-the-frills hotel - but it doesn't pretend to be. It is orderly, clean, comfortable and the food is perfectly good - for £90 for three nights' bed, breakfast and evening meal it isn't much more expensive than staying at home!
So all in all, a very good value hotel offering all that you need for an enjoyable break. If you're after luxury, stay somewhere else rather than put negative reviews on here.
Oh and a special mention to Archie, who was our waiter - a very cheerful chap amid his rushing about, and we enjoyed his service very much.

On arrival we found new receptionist cold and unwelcoming. At 2.57p.m. we asked if room keys could be handed out and she told us that keys were not handed out until 3p.m. There was a queue at our back waiting for keys also. As soon as we left reception, the keys started to get handed out to guests behind us so we had to join the queue again in order to get keys. We knew that the rooms were ready for new guests to move into so it seemed rather petty to hold on to keys for the sake of a few minutes. Also, on day of departure, reception was unmanned even although a lot of guests were leaving. It would be a nice touch if reception was manned when guests are departing and also to remind them to leave their room keys. When we ordered a snack from Bar, the waitress had to go to kitchen to put order in, leaving bar unattended. She returned with cutlery and a few moments later she returned to kitchen for our snacks. It would be a better idea if waitress could telephone order through to kitchen and get someone from kitchen to deliver meals back to bar rather than leaving bar unattended while meals were being dealt with. We were more than happy with our room but a new bath mat and bin are badly needed in room 410. Now onto Restaurant. The Restaurant runs like clockwork when David is in charge but on his days off Kristoff(?) is in charge. He's a nice man but when he is in charge he comes across as anxious and domineering. He was reprimanding staff in front of guests and this is not acceptable and should be addressed. All the Restaurant staff are brilliant and hard working and do NOT deserve to be reprimanded. My thanks to all of you for working so hard. Thanks also to Chef and his staff for lovely meals. The Roast Beef on Sunday was beautiful! Had a lovely time anyway. See you all soon. Thank you.

Thank you for your review and thank you for coming back to stay at the Glenburn. Sorry to see that you found reception unwelcoming when you arrived. The only thing I can say is the guests that were getting keys before you had been with us all week and not new arrivals. I will pass your lovely comments about the staff to all concerned and we look forward to seeing you again.

Very surprised how good this place is. After reading negative reviews I wasn't to sure what to expect.
It's not 5 star so don't book it if that's what you are looking for.

It's a good 3 1/2 star. Good food ,entertainment and good value for what we paid.

Yes would come back again.

Room Tip: Sea view is lovely

As I took a visit to reminisce in Rothesay as I worked at the Glenburn hotel in the 70 s at that time they had plenty of staff and a lovely hotel and good service and the hotel was bright and lovely. .As we arrived at the reception saying we have came for lunch could she tell us were we could have lunch her reply was not very warming she just said go down there and pointed so we just had to find our own way. As we got to the lounge bar nobody was behind bar so we had to go a looking for someone at last found waitress she took our order and drinks too, She was very nice and helpful but only problem when she came with a glass for our drink it had mark around glass. not very nice. Must say food was great but only problem it was a lovely warm day and we wanted to sit outside but waitress said we could not. It is a lovely hotel but needs to come into this centuary...It is a beutifull hotel outside so let it be one inside not having one person doing all the work in the lounge doing bar and lunches and having to unwelcoming people in the reception area ...But I must say it is a beautifull hotel décor terrible

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on our site. Sorry to see you found our service not to your liking but the girl who was serving in the bar also serves food she would have only been out of the bar for a few minutes. As for reception I really don't think anyone would intend to be rude but my apologises if that is the way you found it. Thank you for again for your review.
